“It doesn’t matter whether I believe or not.” Fox either didn’t hear her last sentence or dismissed it outright, but Warrick had heard and understood. “May I come with you?”

“This is a hard life…”

“I’m a doctor, Grandmother,” he interrupted. Warrick noted he seemed unaware of how he had just addressed the wise woman. “I can help save some of the lives that might otherwise be lost. I have nothing to keep me here, nothing waiting for me back in Canada. I’ve given up everything to be with Warrick Synclaire. Please don’t send me away.”

She studied him carefully, then took his hand. Syeira ran her fingertips over the sensitive flesh of his palm and gave a hiss. “You say your name is Fox?”

“Yes.” He shivered at her touch.
