Two hours later our phone rang, and I pelted down the stairs to take the call in the kitchen.

Twenty minutes after that, I was on my way to a private airstrip, another mission looming.

Mother telephoned me the second week in February. “Pamela and Haynsworth are back from the Greek isles, and they’re coming for dinner tonight. I know you’ve never developed a liking for him, but I’d like you to join us. And of course, Jeremy is invited as well.”

“Thank you, Mother.” The last thing I wanted to do was sit across the table from Viscount Haynsworth, but his viscountess was my sister, whom I loved. And my lover had been included. “What time did you want us?”

Dinner was a lavish affair. Mrs Wilson had outdone herself preparing the meal, and Wilson had an under butler come in to help serve.

Pamela, seated across from Haynsworth, was radiant. She wore a suite of deep, translucent jadeite—necklace, earrings, bracelet, and broach.
