looked from one to another in disbelief. “What the fuck’s going on? You have no

reason to call the police. Do you think you can arrest me? What for, tell me

that!”

“Please

calm down, sir,” the detective said. His voice had that world-weary, placating

tone that Curtis heard on all the TV cop shows, wherever in the world they came

from. “No, I’m not here to arrest you. But I’m happy to take a voluntary

statement from you at the station. There are plenty of questions I could find

for you, Mr Hutchens. When I have all the papers in front of me.”

looked startled that the cop knew his name. “What papers? Who are you?”

“Fraud

Squad,” the man said crisply. “Your name has featured on documents found at the

offices of a local debt collection agency. We’re investigating several claims

of harassment and even assault in regards to the collection of debts which have

subsequently been found to be unsubstantiated.” He turned to Bryan. “Is that
