"Lin Yuhe, who exactly are you?" Long Wen walked towards Yu Xuelan as she peered at her with suspicion.
It was the same eyes.
The same eyes that looked at her with disdain in the past.
The distance between them gradually shortened. However, Wu Zhitian stepped forwards and stood in front of Yu Xuelan, preventing Long Wen from getting closer, which made the girl quite surprised.
"What are you doing?" Long Wen questioned angrily as she clenched her fists.
"Calm down," Wu Zhitian responded in the same indifferent tone.
Yu Xuelan cursed herself in any way possible right now by her carelessness and stupidity. Although half of the paper was burned, Long Wen lifted the paper and showed it to the three that stood before her.
They could still make the characters of Snow Flower and Yuhe out even with half of the note missing.
"Miss Lin, what is your relationship with Yu Xuelan?" Her grip tightened, causing the paper to crinkle from the force as she dug her nails into it.
"Yu Xuelan?! That infamous cultivator that tried to kill her entire sect and died in the hands of her own uncle after saving a state from a drought? That Yu Xuelan?!" Wu Ming exclaimed as he held his hand over his mouth in shock.
Yu Xuelan slapped herself with her palm, thanking Wu Ming for making her life seem so tragic and pitiful, but if she had to be honest, it was actually quite enjoyable.
"Don't you DARE say those baseless assumptions about her!" Long Wen gritted her teeth as her eyes lit on fire, glaring at Wu Ming, to which he shrivelled back behind Wu Zhitian.
Every time the topic of Yu Xuelan came up in front of Long Wen, she always became extra sensitive and defensive of others' words and attacked anyone who mentioned anything bad about her.
People thought it was strange for a friend to still be overly obsessed with a dead person who they labelled as a demon or a traitor in this world.
"But didn't she die eight years ago?" Wu Ming muttered to himself.
Wu Zhitian glanced at the young cultivator to silence him from blabbering on and faced back to the front. Yu Xuelan leaned her upper body to the side while the rest remained hidden behind the white-clad man.
Yu Xuelan took a deep breath and explained, "Didn't you know how lonely I was before? I pretended to write letters to many famous and infamous people. Young Madam Long, you just happened to find the one written to the Snow Flower."
Long Wen flinched and lowered the arm that was holding onto the paper.
"Then explain to me, why does this piece of paper reek of demonic energy?"
"Young Madam Long, isn't this entire house reeking of demonic energy? Demons had just raided this residence," Yu Xuelan responded shyly.
"I have dispelled most of the demonic energy. So why is it still surrounding this piece of paper specifically?" She rebuked, but Yu Xuelan prepared to say something back until Long Wen cut her off.
"And Lin Yuhe, you just happened to survive the demon's attack which Wu Zhitian supposedly saved you from, but he has never killed a single demon for the past eight years! So why would he protect a slave?"
Even though Yu Xuelan was not a slave herself, she was relatively offended by Long Wen's condescending demeanour against Lin Yuhe's status.
"Are you calling our great Sect Master a liar?" Wu Ming jumped in as if ready to fight, but Wu Zhitian spread his arm out to stop him from stepping further.
Wu Zhitian shook his head calmly, making Wu Ming unable of saying anything further.
"I'm just suspicious of you, Wu Zhitian. Especially since you were such good acquaintances with Yu Xuelan. How would I know that you and Lin Yuhe aren't planning to bring back her soul?"
"Ahaha, planning to bring back my soul? It was a bit too late for that," Yu Xuelan thought.
Long Wen continued, "My pupil has also told me that this slave has been behaving extra strangely today. Is that just a coincidence?"
Wu Zhitian sighed, "Young Ma-"
"Young Madam Long, I'm afraid you have forgotten the difference in status between Sect Master Wu and you. Please mind your suspicions and go place your thoughts somewhere else!" Wu Ming spoke up while waving his hand back and forth to shoo them away.
Yu Xuelan gaped at the young disciple's words. No one would dare speak to someone of Long Wen's status in that sort of manner, especially if it was a disciple of another sect that appeared to be barely thirteen years of age.
Long Wen clicked her tongue as she furrowed her brows at the preposterous behaviour of the stupid boy.
"Such imprudent speech. Do they teach apprentices to speak like that in ShenMing Wu? As expected, it's a place for freedom, alright," Long Rei added with a gentle smile.
"What did you say? How dare you insult our sect!" Wu Ming grabbed ahold of his sword's handle, preparing to unsheathe it.
"Apprentices should just stay quiet when their masters or leaders are having a conversation, yet you always interrupt your master's speech. That is quite rude no?" Long Rei grinned while maintaining his straight posture.
Wu Ming clenched his jaw as he unsheathed his sword halfway before Yu Xuelan walked out and stepped between them.
"Um, esteemed cultivators, let's just all calm down and talk nicely? Hm?" She smiled, raising her arms slightly to create more distance between the two cultivators.
Yu Xuelan looked over to Long Wen and noticed she was gripping onto her sabre's hilt and instantly felt her crying soul drift away from her body once again from the mess of this situation.
She glanced over to Wu Zhitian, only to see him standing at the same spot with the same expression and the same posture.
It was with no doubt that something had definitely happened over the eight years that she was gone.
"I've always wanted to have a duel with you, Wu Zhitian. I don't care if you're the leader of your sect. I will never approve of you being involved with Xuelan."
Yu Xuelan, "???"
She didn't know whether they were arguing about the note or if they were arguing over her. Maybe a bit of both. If outsiders were to watch this scene, it would seem like two mistresses fighting for the love and attention of their playboy master.
"No, no, how about not fighting? Maybe we can just fight with words??" Yu Xuelan said and her voice gradually quietened as she noticed the determination and anger in Long Wen's expression rising.
She gave up on trying to mediate between them. Instead, she was pondering on whether she should just buy a bag of walnuts and watch them fight. Maybe the store owner would give her a bag for free since she was the chief's fiancée?
"I don't understand why Xuelan picked a coward like you!" Long Wen exclaimed and Xuelan choked on her own saliva in absolute confusion.
Wu Zhitian sighed and prepared to open his mouth.
"Yes, Wu Zhitian, share some of your wisdom!" She thought to herself.
"I do not want to waste my time," he said.
Yu Xuelan had never wanted to smash her head against the wall so badly, so she didn't have to be in the middle of this. Wu Zhitian provoking Long Wen had just made her anger worse.
Long Wen clenched her jaw as veins began protruding from her temples. But as she was about to unsheathe her sabre, she immediately jolted from surprise, and so did everyone else's.
Yu Xuelan's eyes widened and her heart stopped.
They all stared at her, whose movements staggered and fumbled. Her entire body went numb as an unusual amount of warmth drizzled down her chin and onto her palms. Everyone's pupils dilated in shock at the unsettling scene.
Her pupils shrunk in confusion as she raised her palm up, only to see it stained with a burning, thick blood that poured out of her mouth. Her hands felt rather lukewarm, yet her body immediately grew cold.
Murmurs of voices travelled through the girl's ear, but she could not distinguish or make out a single word.
Yu Xuelan didn't know whether it was the effects of using her lacking an abundance of spiritual energy to kill Luo Ran or whether it was her life force slowly diminishing from the contract of the soul transfer.
Her vision blurred as the colours of the sky, buildings, and trees gradually merged into one. Her knees wobbled as her entire body fell weak.
It was rather ironic that she wanted to faint so badly to escape the uncomfortable situation from before, but now she was actually passing out. She pressed her forehead with her palm, attempting to steady herself.
The voices of the people muffled closely along with the ruffling of the trees and the cries of the birds.
No matter how hard she concentrated, she could no longer distinguish whether the noises she heard were from humans or the wind or something else.
Her body had sunken and collapse.
