Haylee and Percy took Cassandra to what was her home, although not for real. The Keeper had to wake up in a familiar place, and not in the middle of nowhere, or else she would ask questions and realize she was being subjected to the memory machine.
It wasn't the first time Haylee and her grandfather had done this. Sometimes they had even got caught and had to use the remote control to activate the original machine all over the city, to erase the memory of the presence of Haylee and Byron from their minds. It wasn't difficult, Michael had seen the Keepers using it, over and over again, and over time he had also made changes to improve it.
«Thank you.» Haylee said to Percy as soon as they closed the door behind them.
«No problem. You know you can call me at any time.»
«Because you are my friend, right? Aren't you up to anything, am I right?»
«I thought it was clear by now.»
«Sorry… It's so hard for me to trust people after all I've been through.»
