Bao Hu didn’t arrive the next day, nor the next. And while I was vexed with him for breaking his promise to spend no more than three days outside, I could only hope and pray that he had not abandoned me.

Meanwhile, however, I spent my days in meditation or thinking about the sacrifices my father had to make to be the man the country needed him to be. On the fifth day, I was in my room meditating after finally capturing the chi of Earth inside my mindscape when Selene rudely interrupted me.

‘Bao Hu just arrived at the palace and there is something different about him.’

‘Different how? Good or bad?’

‘I do not know, but I have a feeling that we have sensed it before.’

With how cryptic Selene’s message had been, I stood up and came out of the room despite my aching joints. I had been sitting in that same position for hours. I knew I was close to being ready to challenge my first tribulation, but I needed to find a secluded and safe place to do it.
