Capítulo 3: 2. Is It Dead?

Serena woke up slowly, blinking softly in the afternoon light. She noticed first her clothes were wet, and she was lying curled up on grass. There was a smelly piece of something nasty not far from where her head was lying, and she could only count herself fortunate it was not under her. Her hands ached and felt sticky, and there were sore scrapes on her legs too.

For a long minute she didn't remember what had happened earlier. But then she heard Snap!

Sudden terror sent Serena scrambling away from the noise, desperate to put some distance between her and the monster. Wondering why she wasn't dead yet, she turned and looked at the creature.

Most of the fence posts for meters around have broken or collapsed, and the barb wire is wrapped tightly around the monster's jaws, holding them mostly shut. It seems, like a crocodile, most of it's jaw muscles were focused on getting a strong bite force, meaning it was possible to bind them shut.

That wasn't enough to have kept the monster from getting her, however, as the wire could not penetrate the scales. Serena saw the answer to her survival when she looked past the chilling eyes of the beast to the gills on the neck, which were slowly bleeding.

The wire had easily passed over the creature's head, and entangled in the red glistening flesh of the gills. Despite being in air and not water, the beast had them fully extended, looking sort of like a sea anemone, acting exactly like they would in water, so it was easy for wire to catch them.

Every struggle of the beast caused the wire about it's jaws to twist tighter, and the wire on it's gills to cut deeper.

Serena shivered in horror - just 3 strands of barb wire saved her life.

She took out her pocket knife, and gathered her courage. The beast was trapped, for now, but the wire on the fence was old and well rusted. It could easily break, and the beast would be free to eat her.

She tried to steady her breathing, and approached the monster. It glared at her with it's intelligent eyes, so smart and dreadful and cruel. Wary of the beast that was so much bigger than her, Serena edged forward over the collapsed fence carefully. The last thing she wanted was to be caught in the fence with it.

After she was over the fence, Serena was unsure what to do. The thing was enormous - easily 3ft wide, 4ft tall in the middle, and at least 11ft long. This thing could never have fit in the paddock pond, and yet it did. Even the smallest set of it's fin-limbs were 1/2ft in length.

When she drew closer to the beast, it thrashed it's powerful tail and flailed it's limbs, trying to escape the wire - even now the cunning creature was entirely focused on eating her.

Taking a deep breath, Serena adjusted her grip on the knife, and dodged the sharp clawed limbs of the beast to sit on the neck of the monster, near it's gills.

She lunged forward and plunged her knife down at the monster's eye, but it blinked, and the powerful scales covering it caused her to only strike sparks. She tried again, and again, almost in a frenzy but her little knife made no impact on the scales and was being slowly broken instead.

She sobbed with every breath as the monster wriggled and writhed beneath her, trying to kill her even as she struck at it. Finally she gave up on destroying the eyes of the beast, and hooked the tip of her much battered knife into the gills.

She stabbed and cut at the gills as best she could, and the beast struggled mightily in return. Blood ran thickly on the grass, as the barb wire finally broke free of the fence posts, strand by strand. It recoiled fiercely upon itself, and entangled around itself madly.

The flying wire cut her hands and cheeks, but Serena could not feel the pain. Nothing in the world mattered to her now except killing this beastly thing.

Gurgles, gulps, growls, snaps and sobs filled the air as the pair struggled to decide which one would live, and which would die.

The knife snapped at the tip several times, getting smaller in Serena's hands, but she could not stop stabbing the beast.

Eventually, with a shocking wail, the horrid intelligent life left the monster's eyes and it fell still upon the bloody, broken ground. Serena stabbed it a few more times on instinct, before exhaustion made her stop.

No sound was left but for her breathing, and the distant panicked cries of livestock.

Serena fell forward, propping herself up on injured hands against unforgiving scales, with only one thought on her mind.

Is it dead?
