JAMES
“Hello.” Father Morel took a cool cloth from my head and dipped it into a bowl on the floor beside the couch. He smiled, but the only face I wanted to see, was Miri’s.
Except she wasn’t there.
“You did it, James.” The priest squeezed my shoulder.
My brain hurt when I tried to think, but I managed to ask, “What did I do, exactly.”
“You shut the Door, that is all. Helena won’t be able to use this Door ever again.”
“Ever?”
He nodded.
“But she can use other Doors, right, so what’s the big deal? I nearly died - are you telling me she can come for me again?”
He started shaking his head even before I finished talking. “No, no. Helena won’t be able to step foot in France - she will have no access to her power here, she would be as a normal woman. And you can believe she would never willingly relinquish her power in such a manner.”
“No, of course not. Who would want to be a normal person?”
