Kevin stood up and walked over to me to give me a kiss, but I ducked out of his arms, knowing that once his lips touched me, I would not be able to keep a single thought in my head. The disbelief on his face was almost comical, and I probably would have laughed if my heart were not breaking about what I was about to do.
“I think we need to talk,” I stated, wishing my voice sounded strong than it did.
Kevin dropped his arms and fell back a step or two.
“About what?” he asked with the caution of a man married as long as he was.
“About what’s going to happen now. Robert no longer wants me in his life, so I don’t need to be retrained. So….”
“You no longer need us,” Kevin finished angrily.
Whatever pan Alyssa had in her hand slammed down on the stove before she turned towards me.
“What’s going on, Bethany?” she demanded from me.
