Capítulo 60: Chapter 60: Let Someone Else Go

Chelsea’s pager went off reminding her that she had responsibilities. Ones that couldn’t be shirked no matter what was going on in her life. People lived, died and needed medical attention no matter who administered it. She tried to stand, but Jake didn’t let go. “Jake.”

“Let someone else take the call. Someone else can be the hero this time.”

Too tired to argue she didn’t resist. Two sets of footsteps thundered down the hall. The screen door slammed shut. They’d handle it. Her grief paralyzed her. “What if I never see him again?” Her voice came out weak and unsteady.

Jake took her face in his hands. “You will. Stone and Melissa are doing everything they can. And Max is a smart little boy. Right?”

She nodded. “So smart he scares me.”

He wiped some of her tears away. “He’ll come back. You have to believe that.”

Sniff. “I want to.” And she did. To believe anything less would mean she’d let Morgan down. And Max. That she hadn’t protected him from the evils of the world.
