The reporter is talking about The Aeternus Universe's economic value and how it's now the most popular game globally. I hear the shower from down the hall in my room shut off, meaning Jess is done.
That reminds me, I need to rent out the ice rink for tonight. My phone is on the coffee table, and I lift my body off the couch and pick it up.
Nicky's number takes a second to find, but I hit call and place my phone against my ear. In a couple of rings, she answers.
"Hey, Scott! What can I do for you?"
Nicky is one of the few friends, and she's what you'd call a Goth girl. She's got more tattoos than any girl I've seen. She's tried to convince me to come to some of her parties, but I've always said no.
She's a really sweet girl once you see past the exterior she puts up.
"Hey Nicky, I was wondering if you'd let me rent out the ice rink tonight. I'll pay any price you ask."
There is silence on the other side of the line, and I have to lift my phone off my ear to make sure I don't get disconnected. The line is still connected, so she's not responding.
Before I can ask her what's wrong, she's talking about something I didn't think she'd be interested in.
"You renting out the ice rink for a date?"
She's never cared or asked me something like that. While in truth it is, I can't tell her that it's with my sister. I can make it sound like a casual time for my sister and me to catch up. Disguise it for what it really is.
She's waiting for an answer, and I know she's got an impatient streak in her.
"My sister is a great ice skater, and we're going to catch up a bit. I don't want to be bothered going when it's open to the public, hence why I'm renting it out."
My story is sound and logical, but Nicky isn't an idiot, and she might think I'm trying to pull something.
She's just a person who's always cautious when it comes to other people and what they say.
"Why didn't you just say so! Of course, I'll send an invoice for the amount and once I get payment. You and your sister can come by anytime tonight."
Many would say that Nicky has a thing for me, but she's pretty open and talks like this to everyone.
The way she reacted when she thought I had a date is something she does with all her guy friends. She likes to make sure they won't get hurt. She's a great friend.

I pull the phone away from my ear and hang up. A minute later, I get an invoice on my phone for 400 dollars.

I send her a text with a smiling face, and that's it. She doesn't send anything back, but it says she saw it. I put my phone away and lift my head to look at the TV.

She's excited for sure. Her voice sounds so happy. I reach my arm over and sling it over her shoulder and bring her closer. I don't care if her hair is wet. Her nice smell makes up for it.
A shallow breath enters my lungs, and I prepare my answer.
"Nicky is letting us rent out the ice rink. We can go anytime we want tonight. The security system is already familiar with me."
She raises her eyebrow in confusion and pulls away slightly.
"What?"
I'm confused... Did I do something wrong? She looks at my phone on the armrest and indicates for me to give it to her.
