With a body covered in wounds, Evan could only grumble because this was the 4th time he had lost against the ferret's gang.
Without changing his wet clothes and getting torn, he started to clear the field and immediately planted the seeds. Now he has to be patient and wait another 3 months to harvest cabbage and corn to sell.
Evan has 3 fields in the south as a field for medicinal plants, the east as fruit fields, and the north as a field for vegetables. All agricultural produce would be sold in the market for the living expenses of his family.
Evan started farming when his father left his family 5 years ago to run an expedition with his party in the Snowhands Guild. There has been no news or rumors regarding the expedition led by his father to date.
This made Evan hold a slight grudge against his father's decision because, for 5 years, his mother had to struggle to find income to support Evan and his sister.
In the past, Evan dreamed of becoming a knight commander who earns a lot of money to make his mother no longer need to work. But that desire was dashed when his magic circuit was not awakened one year ago. Now he had to accept the reality of being a farmer and also the lowest-ranked adventurer in the Snowhands Guild.
The legend of the golden-eyed demon has built the minds of all the humans on this continent, making anyone born with those cursed eyes treat it like a poisonous snake in a cradle.
Evan, born with his rare and unique eye color, had to get used to the ridicule thrown at him and accept any physical activity done without putting up a fight.
The act of intimidation slowly disappeared when his family decided to move to a guild that didn't really care about the legend of the golden-eyed demon 7 years ago. His parents, who were formerly respected nobles, had now registered as adventurers in the Snowhands Guild.
But still, the legends that had built this world made adventurers who came from other towns look down on Evan. Not infrequently, Evan had to be rejected from quests taken because he did not have a party. Also, the client gave a note that only humans could take this quest while Evan was omitted.
Even though Evan had become an adventurer a year ago, he only obtained Rank F or Rank E quests once a week, which resulted in 5 to 7 bronze coins.
Living in poverty and without talent apart from farming, Evan couldn't rely on his income from being an adventurer. And what helped his family's life the most was his income from agriculture. It was proven that he could make 5 silver coins per harvest so that his mother did reduce the portion of her work to make potions every day.
At least this useless young man was quite proud of his achievements because he could lighten the burden on his mother. His Mother began to become sickly since the departure of his father.
"Ah, Evan, are you all right?" A girl's voice broke Evan's concentration as he was tilling his land with a hoe.
"Huff, I just finished replanting my vegetables again. Can't you wait at home as usual? What's wrong, Ellie?" Evan rubbed his forehead with a hand covered in dirt.
Ellie was the only friend Evan had, a girl with short brown hair and golden brown eyes. She was granddaughter regional guild boss and was a receptionist at Guild Snowhands in this town.
"Gosh, is this time the looter isn't a weasel?" Ellie was shocked when she saw Evan's plight and immediately gave Evan a healing wound.
"Wow, the more often you learn with my mother, the greater your magic ability. I was helped by your coming here." Evan tried to move his fingers and his head, which was previously aching and cramping.
"S-stupid, how can you do the farming with this bad condition. Just so you know, I came here because of your mother's request. So, don't get me wrong!" Ellie flushed when she got complimented. She was weak with praise from Evan.
"I'm going to guild today, is there a Rank E or F quest for solo adventurers?" Evan stood and carried his hoe.
"Really! Eh, I mean you want to go together to the guild with me?" Ellie immediately hid her happy expression and tried to calm down.
"If you object to that, no problem, I'll go alone."
"N-no! Because I'm going to the guild too, we better go together. You will be safer from adventurers from other towns if you are with me."
"Really? You really are my savior." Evan turned around and smiled.
"W-why are you smiling!" Ellie blushed even more and immediately preceded Evan to walk back to Evan's wooden house.
Even though Evan was a Rank F adventurer, he had a good-looking face and lean body that made any girl interested in him. But after seeing his cursed eyes slowly, the girls abandoned their intentions. They stayed away from him, not wanting to get involved with poisonous snakes.
"Older brother, were you beaten by ferrets again?" The girl with snow-white hair and blue eyes greeted the arrival of her older brother sarcastically from the dining table.
"Liliana, you shouldn't speak harshly to your older brother who is working hard in the fields." Ellie had an excellent talk with the 8-year-old girl.
"Yes, I lost again. Looks like my training portion needs to be increased again." Evan considers his sister's statement as an encouragement to him.
"Ellie, thank you for healing Evan. In exchange, you have breakfast with us, okay!" Mrs. Hayes, who was cooking, invited Ellie cheerfully.
"Yes, Mrs. Hayes." Ellie wasn't too awkward to accept Mrs. Hayes' request for breakfast. She had known the Hayes family well for quite a while.
"Liliana! Didn't I tell you not to eat candy before breakfast?" Mrs. Hayes immediately took the candy box from Liliana with ease.
"N-no!" Liliana was about to cry when the candy left her arms.
"Sorry, long wait." Evan, who had taken a shower and changed his clothes, immediately sat down at the dining table. The four of them ate together.
After wearing a tag necklace and carrying a dagger that his father gave him, Evan was ready to go to the guild.
"Evan, I'm sorry I have to burden some of our family's living expenses to you." His mother was sad because her son had to go to the guild where adventurers from another town would mock Evan.
"It's okay. At least I can ease your struggle. I'll go first." Evan left his wooden house and went to the Snowhands Guild Branch in this town with Ellie.
In the morning, the guild was still not crowded, only a few adventurers relaxing. So, Evan could relax without worrying about being intimidated when choosing the available quests on the guild wall.
After paying attention to all the existing quests, Evan found 3 quests that were suitable for him. Maybe it's Evan's lucky day for giving alms to the ferrets.
Even though the prize amount didn't match the amount he lost to the ferrets, he was grateful and took the 3 papers to study at Ellie's desk.
"How lucky I am, there are 3 Rank E Quests without conditions." Evan showed it to Ellie.
"Hmm, you only need to complete 2 more Rank E quests to be promoted to Rank E adventurers." Ellie opened her diary and read Evan's achievements over the past year.
"Wha, you recorded it in detail? But it's not a book I'm used to seeing." The chance he had of earning more money apart from farming was by becoming a High Rank Adventurer.
Even though it took a year to become an E rank Adventurer, which Ordinary Adventurers could usually achieve within 1 month. But Evan was sure that one day, he would become a High Rank Adventurer.
"Eh, this is a special book for rank F adventurers who don't need a ledger." Ellie immediately hid her book because she forgot that she also wrote data on Evan's achievements in her diary and writing in the ledger.
The conversation between Evan and Ellie was heard by 3 men in adventurous robes. One of the tall men walked behind Evan and, without warning, immediately threw a hard punch.
*Bam*
Evan swiftly blocked hard blows with the palm of his hand. "Who are you?"
Without answering Evan's question, the man returned the punch with his other hand.
Evan, annoyed that his question was ignored, immediately twisted the man's hand and slammed it down.
*Brak*
The robed man only used physical strength to attack Evan which didn't make a loud sound. It made Ellie not realize there was a fight in front of her table.
*Clap* *Clap*
"Indeed, the rumors about the legendary demon are not just mere figments. Pardon our impolite greetings." The lean man helped the tall man to his feet.
"Who are you?" Evan jumped out of the chair and got into his stance.
"No-no, we actually have no intention of fighting you. Introduce us from the Sinner Brotherhood, the Rank D party from the Guild Headquarters." The lean man introduced himself politely.
"If there is no fighting, will go for what was that attack?" Evan kept his stance ready for another surprise attack.
"I'm just testing you. I'm actually looking for an adventurer ranked E or D to join my party."
"I've seen those dirty tricks many times. Just make your point!"
"Ahaha, indeed those demon eyes are not just accessories. Actually, we need 1 more person to carry out this Rank D quest." The lean man showed a quest paper which was rewarded with 20 gold coins.
