Upon entering the house, Slate greeted his sister before going straight to his room.
"What was that?" Scarlet asked, for Slate always come close to check on them before getting change.
Amethyst shrugged before she looked at her notes.
"You said you will get something in your room, did you get it?" Scarlet asked again.
Amethyst's movements stopped upon realizing that she didn't went to her unit and instead returned after talking with Slate.
"Oh, yeah, remembered that I didn't need it at all when I was there so I just returned and chanced upon Slate," she replied.
Scarlet nodded her head, "You should really learn how to lie Amethyst, you are too obvious right now. Slate smoked outside, didn't he?"
Amethyst pursed her lips, since she rarely interacts with people since a long time ago that she was really not used to lying.
"Was I really that obvious?" she couldn't help but ask with a twitch of her lips.
Scarlet laughed, Amethyst had always been the honest one that when she lies, everything was visible in her face.
"But wait..."
Amethyst said upon remembering what Scarlet had just said.
"You knew he smoke?" she asked.
"Of course, he rarely does it and only do so whenever he has so many things on his mind. It was not a vise though, just a puff once in three months? He could even go on in a year without having one. I don't know who taught him how to do that and if it really was helpful for him," Scarlet replied with a sigh and a smile.
Amethyst couldn't say anything, because what was she supposed to say?
He was affected by the fact that you are dying?
Scarlet seeing her reaction smiled, "Amethyst."
Amethyst looked at her.
"Be strong," was all she said but Amethyst already wanted to cry.
"I can't, I was never the strong one," was all she could say.
"I'm sorry, you had to go through something so painful," Scarlet couldn't help but say.
"No, why are you apologizing?" Amethyst almost shouted when Scarlet suddenly apologized to her regarding this.
Slate came out just to hear this.
"Never apologize for something you never wanted, it was given to you without your consent. Without you wanting it, it was given to you. Why are you apologizing for that?" Amethyst kept going.
"Amethyst..." Scarlet wanted to say something but Amethyst shook her head.
"Never ever apologize for what you are going through right now. Because you are a strong one Scarlet, you still did everything you could to live despite what was thrown in your way. As compared to you I almost gave up on everything. We have different emotional or physical problems and that means they have different solutions as well. You chose the solution of living it to the best you can but I chose to let it go. If not for you guys I wouldn't even be here right now."
She was now standing and saying everything with strength as if to make Scarlet remember it.
"What is going on?" Slate asked.
"We're just having a chat," Amethyst replied before sitting back down.
Slate looked at Scarlet and Scarlet smiled, "Yes, we are just having a chat."
He raised an eyebrow but chose not to ask any longer.
"I'll go out for a bit, we need groceries," he then said.
Scarlet gave him a look that he had no choice but go out again after just coming back.
"Take care," she then said.
Amethyst was already focused on what she was doing.
"I shouldn't have apologized but instead thanked you. But you and I already thanked each other more than enough that I think we no longer needed it. But just as you don't want me to apologize for what was given to me, then don't think of yourself as someone who is not strong."
She heard a sniff and could only smile in defeat when she saw that Amethyst was no longer working but was instead trying her best not to cry.
"If you weren't strong then you wouldn't be here right now. You would have stayed and allowed them to exploit you. If you weren't strong then you would have just listened to your sister last night and didn't confront her. Our pasts are too much for us to bare but that is what made us who we are today."
Scarlet suddenly felt a bout of nausea.
'It has become quite frequent now, even I feel too weak as compared to the past. I really am close, aren't I?' she thought but she still wanted to say everything to Amethyst.
So she took a deep breath.
"That is why keep being strong, I was mistaken it was not be strong but keep being one. Live your life, live it to the fullest. No matter what happens, you still have a long one ahead of you. Just as how you once touched people's lives with your stories, you can do it again. Again and again, because you were given the chance to do so."
Amethyst looked up at her, "You compliment me too much."
"I don't, I am just stating what I witnessed from you."
She once again took a deep breath, "You being here is our greatest blessing."
"Slate tends to keep to himself everything that was going on. I know he had somehow opened up to you even just for a bit. So please keep on watching over him."
Amethyst frowned, "He haven't, so you should berate him still."
She was implying that Scarlet still needs to look after her brother.
Scarlet on the other hand could only laugh, "As you know, he is the one who always berates me. Even as an older sister, I couldn't truly say anything to him."
Amethyst could only shake her head, "You already look tired. Why don't you go and rest now?"
She had noticed that Scarlet's breaths were becoming deeper and that her eyes looked tired compared to a while ago.
"Our relationship is really something isn't it? We were just berating one another then now worrying for each other," Scarlet couldn't help but to point out.
"I guess this is having true friends?" Amethyst replied with a smile as she helped push Scarlet towards her room.
"Yes, this is indeed what true friends are. We don't only say the good things but the bad ones as well."
Amethyst nodded her head, "So go now and follow your friend, get some rest and we would wake you up once we are done with dinner."
Seeing as Scarlet was already lying comfortably, she closed the door.
When the door was closed her smile disappeared and determination could be seen in her face.
Her eyes went to Scarlet's laptop, 'If I really want to help there is one thing I need to be able to do.'
Because she had seen how very little Scarlet could type before she gets tired that she knew she needs to step up her own game.
She took it up and opened the word document ready to type her notes in it. But the moment this intention was there, her fingers stopped just above the keyboard and started trembling.
She gritted her teeth, "Please move, there is no more time. Please let us finish this."
She may not be part of the medical world or not someone who was very close to Scarlet but she can tell with the few years that she had been with her, Scarlet had lost so much vitality already.
'She will be gone soon, please move,' she begged in her mind.
