Completely ignorant of her Lady's stern facial expression and the thoughts floating in Elizabeth's head, Oletha went on to continue her words. 

"This news is very crucial even to you, Milady at least in the long run but of course I can only tell it to you if you permit me to speak of it to you, because it is not in my place to bombard you with such information if you feel you might not need it." 

Oletha had purposely spoken her words in a twisted way but she did this because she needed to gain her Lady's attention and have them talk about something at least.

She was considerate of Elizabeth's sullen mood at the instant and didn't think in her own capacity that the awkward silence from a few minutes back, would do her mood any good. Therefore she'd assumed that this approach would gain Elizabeth's attention.
