"Really he went camping?" Anna asked. 

She couldn't understand why her grandfather was hiding this from her. 

By disclosing his critical health to her, he can insist her to come back and even use his illness as reason to do whatever he likes.

He is confident that she is still unaware of her grandfather's condition.
