CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

McKenna's feet were beginning to ache but she didn't want to complain.

'Your feet are hurting, right?' Tony asked

'Yes, they are' McKenna was truthfully

'I am sorry I was a jerk earlier and since this area we are now is fairly safe, you can sit under that mango tree while I go ahead and bring a cab to you' Tony pointed to the mango tree by the side. If he was going to win McKenna's heart, he had to show her his charming side.

'Apology accepted, thanks Tony'

Tony left and came back with a cab within minutes of leaving McKenna under the tree. They both boded the cab and headed to McKenna's house.

In transit, McKenna ransacked her bag to get her phone and found it missing. She was alarmed until she remembered she left it on the dashboard in Tony's car.

'What are you looking for?' Tony asked

'My phone… and I believe I left it inside your car. My house is so closer and I really need to shower. I am so tired'

'How about we drop you at home to take your much desired shower then the cab can take me back to my car, I am sure my mechanic is already fixing the problem. I can bring your phone to you before I go home' Tony high fived himself. It was a good way to win someone's heart.

'You will really do that for me?' McKenna asked

'Of course'

McKenna found him charming and Tony's tricks were working on her. When they got to her house, unlike before when she worried that Jason would hate her apartment, with Tony she could not careless what he thought of her little apartment, maybe she was too tired to care.

Tony walked her to the door and they stood there looking at each other. McKenna half expected Tony to kiss her on the lips, it was exactly what Jason would have done but he kissed her cheeks instead. She smiled and opened her door.

'Go ahead and take your beauty bath. I will be back with your phone in no time'

Tony's car was already fixed when he got to the scene. He paid the mechanic and offered to drive him to a place he could get a cab home and he humbly declined. He handed to him a couple of thousand naira notes for transport and he was more than grateful.

Tony was driving to the McKenna's house, when her phone rang and he ignored it but when he saw the caller was persistent, he took McKenna's phone and answered the call.

'Oma…Hi, it's Jason'

'Hello…This is McKenna's phone' Tony said wondering maybe it was a wrong number. McKenna's name couldn't be Oma now, could it?

'Who is this?' the voice on the other end was cold, icy and hostile for someone calling a wrong number.

'This is Tony and who might you be?' Tony asked trying as much as possible to ignore the rudeness in the man's voice

'Put McKenna on the phone and since this is her phone; you shouldn't be taking her calls anyway' the man demanded.

Now, Tony was angry too and he decided to say something that was open for interpretation.

'Sorry pal, McKenna is taking a shower and after what I put her through today, she is sore and a warm bath could do wonders to her aching body' Tony's voice contained a hint of laughter and excitement.

The line went dead. Tony knew he took things too far and he would probably have to tell McKenna about it. When he got to her door he could hear her television and he knocked.

'Come on in, the door is open' McKenna yelled from the room

Tony pushed the door and entered.

'Do you always ask people to come on in without asking them who they are, young lady?' Tony joked

'Oh Tony, thanks for returning my phone. Did anyone call me?' McKenna asked as she took the phone from Tony.

'Wow, a lot of missed call…oh, I see you answered one of the calls. Who was it?' McKenna said as she went inside the kitchen to get a plastic chair.

She offered the chair to Tony but he kept standing.

'I think your caller said his name was Jason'

'Jason called me!!!' McKenna didn't mean to shriek 'What did you say to him?'

'He was really rude and so when he asked where you were, I told him you were taking a shower because you were sore after what I put you through. I was talking about your feet but I think he misunderstood and hung up on me. Who is he to you?'

McKenna felt time stop and she couldn't breathe properly. Jason called her and she wasn't there.

'Why would you say that to him? He is my boss, you dumbass'

Tony knew she was angry but he hadn't expected her to call him names.

'I think he is more than just your boss, McKenna and for Christ sake breath or you will pass out' Tony noticed she was finding it difficult to breathe and she was turning blue with dismay.

McKenna dialed the number over and over and over again but the operator kept saying the phone was disconnected. McKenna threw the phone on the bed and turned, she found Tony standing behind her trying to comfort her.

'What are you still doing here? I need you to go away, now Tony' McKenna opened the door to usher him out of her house.

'Answer one question for me McKenna, if this Jason asks you not to go to Canada and marry him, would you have stayed? Please be truthful' Tony asked and wiped his face with his right hand.

'Yes, I would have stayed. Now, go away and I never want to see you again' McKenna said and slammed the door after pushing him out.
