"Yukio...are you taming that monster?" asked Hiroki from the hill.
I couldn't respond. If I had lost focus even for a second, I would be dead. I pointed to the right, and the monster walked that way. Then I gently let my hand down, and the monster retreated away from the camp. Hiroki was shocked at what he had just seen. But then, I collapsed.
"eugh, help...losing too much blood..." I said as I hit the grass. I blacked out. The man on the hill continued to speak to himself, chortling.
"Well then, I guess the final seat in the Zodiac has been found. I'll need to have a word with you the next time I see you...Capricorn."
The mysterious man then turned around, snapped his fingers, and phased out of existence, teleporting away.
When I came to, I was in a building, a gentle breeze was hitting my face, and I noticed Yui sitting by my side. Ambrosia was there too. I was in the Camp Alpha Hospital.
"Yukio, are you waking up? Thank god, I thought you were in a coma!"
"I suppose he is coming to. But his mind is still boggled, it's an absolute mess in there! Yukio, what the hell did you do out there?"
Ambrosia and Yui were on either side of my bed. My leg was patched up, the bleeding stopped, however, I was incredibly confused. The last thing I remembered was the monster lunging toward me, and then I had seemingly taken control of it. But how?
"...guys, what happened to me?"
"Well, we were called in by Hiroki. He told us what happened. Yukio, how did you do that?"
"Do what? You mean with the monster?"
"Yeah. I could tell something went wrong because your mind suddenly became blocked off a little after 2:00. I was trying to tell you good luck because I was training some heroes in the admin building, but I couldn't break into you!"
"Turns out you were using 100% of your mind and energy to control that monster...how did you do it??"
Ambrosia was asking me this question with a tone of voice I had never heard before. For the first time ever, it sounded like even she had no idea what had just happened.
"I don't even know. I panicked and made a last-second decision. The monster just kind of listened to me, I guess..."
"Well, however you did it, it's completely beyond my understanding, and that's saying something. I sense no potential monster taming abilities in you, and what you just did out there has never before been documented."
"The closest technique to that would be me controlling monsters with my telekinesis, but even that is difficult because of the significant weight of the monsters... Yukio, this is huge."
I decided that now would be a good time to bring up the mysterious man I saw on the hill. I'm sure that if anybody would know about him, it would be Ambrosia, considering she's an esper.
"Ambrosia, before my quest, I ran into a guy in the street who asked me if I was "Capricorn". Do you know of any guys like that? He was wearing gray and black and had this weird vibe to him. Silver hair, black and gold eyes?"
"...not that I can recall. Why, does he seem weird to you?"
"Well, not until I saw him again spectating me from the hill. He was standing behind Hiroki, and Hiroki seemed to have no idea that he was even there! It's like he was stalking me..."
"Hm, he sounds interesting. If I see anybody who matches that description, I'll talk to them. Perhaps they could be a person of interest."
"Thanks. So Yui, how severe are my injuries?"
"Well, the gash in your leg is your only major injury, and it's not that deep. It should fully heal in a few days. But it's safe to say that you completed your quest. You should at least rest here for a few hours before returning to the hotel."
"I see. Will I be able to walk? My leg doesn't seem to be hurting that much."
"Yeah, you will. You didn't break anything, so you can walk freely. Just try not to run, the stitches in your leg may come loose..."
Yui had stitched my leg up and wrapped it in what appeared to be a cast of sorts, except it wasn't hard like a cast on Earth. It was snug though, keeping my stitches intact.
"I see. Thank you for healing me as you promised, Yui. To be honest, if I hadn't done what I did back there, then I probably would have died..."
"Probably, considering you took forever to use the safe word. Now that I think about it, you didn't even use it once. You're gutsy, but also foolish!" said Ambrosia, looking the other way. I could tell she made that statement out of concern, rather than malice.
"Hey! I was in a panic, okay? I had barely any time to react. It was a natural human instinct."
"Pfft, I guess that's understandable," said Ambrosia, smirking my way.
Suddenly, the door to the room opened, and Hiroki walked in, holding a few papers in his hand. He approached my bed and spoke to me.
"Yukio, how's your leg?"
"It's alright now that Yui's patched it up for me. Are those my hero placement test results?"
"Yes, they are... now, I need to speak with you for a second, alone if possible. I'm sorry Genius Nurse and Ms. Esper Witch, but if you two would leave for a few."
I had forgotten that Yui's hero name was Genius Nurse. In context, it sounded comical, but it was professional. The two of them left the room, leaving me and Hiroki alone. It appeared that he wanted to speak about the recent events.
"Yukio Sazuke. I must speak with you about what you just did out there. I have no idea how you did that. But to me, it looked like you tamed that monster. Do you have any idea of how this could be possible?"
"I have no idea... all I did was hold my hand into the air, yell stop, and it did. It felt like a huge weight had applied itself to me, and I couldn't speak until I had finished..."
"Well, this is a completely new ability as far as I am concerned. I've documented it on your hero results. Here, if you would take a look at these."
Hiroki handed me my papers. They read as follows:
~~YUKIO SAZUKE: HERO PLACEMENT RESULTS~~
Physical: [48/50] (#1)
Mental: [43/50] (#3)
Overall: [91/100] (#1)
Quest: Lv. 3 - PASS
Abilities: Seems to possess an unusual ability to tame monsters. How he goes about this is unknown, and could be subject to further studies, with consent from the hero in question. -- Fair Dodging and Agility -- Decent Swordsman
INITIAL PLACEMENT: Level 2 - Rank 6
~~~~~~~
At the very bottom of the page, was my deemed hero name... "Scarlet Antihero"
"We decided that this name suited your alleged ability to tame monsters. However, if any other abilities arise, you can opt to change it to something that you see fits better."
"No... it's perfect. I love it."
"Awesome. Well then, Scarlet Antihero, you rest here, while I talk to the administration about where to go from here, in terms of transfers for you. Ms. Esper Witch told me she requested to be transferred with you, so I will see if we can get that arranged. Do you object?"
"Absolutely not. Thank you, Hiroki, sir."
"Great. Also, because this is a brand new ability, and we know nothing of it, or even if it's an ability at all, do you accept or object being tested on?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, what we're saying is we want to make sure this isn't a fluke, and to see if your ability is consistent, or if there's a requirement that must be met for you to use it. We would like to analyze you a bit more, Yukio."
"Oh, I see. I guess that's okay. Just let me know when I have to show up, and what I have to do."
"Absolutely. Thank you for your time, and congratulations, Scarlet Antihero."
Hiroki stood up and gave a salute to me. He then left the room, and Ambrosia and Yui returned. They spoke to me, asking me the same question at the same time.
"Well!? Give us the spiel! Where did you rank??" asked them both. I replied, giving them all of the details...introducing~
Yukio Sazuke, alias "Scarlet Antihero". Hero Level 2, Rank 6. He possesses a mysterious ability to tame monsters, which he has not yet mastered. He also possesses a fair amount of skill in the use of the sword and is very quick and agile. He is brand new to the Hero Camp.
They looked at each other, and then back at me. Both of them had an expression of surprise and excitement.
"Whoa, that's a pretty sweet name! I like it! But what do they mean by antihero?"
"I'm pretty sure they're calling me an antihero because if I were to be able to control monsters, I could potentially use their power to fight...monsters? I guess?"
"So basically you're a tamer?" asked Yui, trying to piece together what had happened still.
"I guess so, although it's not confirmed. The evidence is pretty definitive, however, so I hope that this wasn't just a one-time fluke..."
"Well, if you think that this is your ability, then I think that you should try to harness it as best you can. I'll continue to try and build you up to bring out that other ability as well," said Ambrosia.
"Thanks, both of you. I really appreciate this."
"No problem! Hey Yukio, you should rest here for a while. We've got some business to attend to at the admin building regarding transfers. Tonight, if you come back, just meet us at the hotel room, and we will update you on the situation." said Yui.
"Alright, sounds good. I might try to make it back there tonight."
Ambrosia and Yui got up and left the hospital room. I was in stable condition, and I was able to walk. I just had some slight discomfort in my leg. It seemed that the claw of the Scatterwolf gouged my leg a half-inch deep, so it needed stitches, but it wasn't anything to die over.
I rested at the hospital for the evening, eating lunch and dinner while I was there. I walked around and gently exercised my leg. The stitches were intact, and not falling out, which was a good sign. By the time evening rolled around, I was ready to return to the hotel room.
I exited my room and checked out of the hospital. I was still amazed at the way my genes had been altered in this new world. Wounds healed much quicker! The nurse at the front desk checked me out that evening.
"Alright, be careful out there Scarlet Antihero! If you feel the need to come back, or if the stitches come loose, please return!"
"Will do! Thank you!"
I wasn't used to being referred to by my hero name. It made me feel more official. My life was about to change in this world, for better or for worse, it was up to me to decide how I spent it, and where I transferred to.
I exited the hospital and hooked a right toward the hotels. However, while walking down the street, I noticed the same man from before, standing in the alley. He waved me over to him, and I approached him.
"You again? What do you want?"
"...I need to talk to you about something..."
"Okay? What is it? Why were you watching my quest from the hill?"
The man gazed into my eyes, analyzing my features once more, and smiled. His grin was genuine, and he seemed to be holding no malice towards me.
"I've become aware of your ability to tame monsters. It's just as I had suspected... you hold the authority of Capricorn."
"The authority of what now? Who are you anyway?"
"Allow me to introduce myself, Yukio Sazuke... my name is Marius Aegis, Patriarch of The Zodiac, representing Gemini. I come bearing a question for you."
"The Zodiac? What is this, some kind of cult?"
"Cult is a strong word... it pains me to hear that you refer to it as such... but Yukio, would you mind eating this for me?"
As Marius asked me this question, he held out his hand, and in it, was a heart... it was large and blue, and it was still beating...
"This is the heart of a monster. I'd like you to eat it."
"...WHAT?"
