100% Tea Leaves / Chapter 6: Story 1 Chapter 6: Upgrades

Capítulo 6: Story 1 Chapter 6: Upgrades

The next day, Albert came to the Cafe prepared. He had bought a few bags of tea leaves and had done some research on different coffees. At the entrance, Samuel was waiting, holding the keys.

"You're here. I assume those are the tea leaves?" Samuel asked, looking at the bags in his hands.

"Yeah. I bought a few types of tea. I'll show you once we're inside." Albert answered with a smile. He then placed the bags on the counter, sorting out the contents.

"I bought Oolong, Green tea, Jasmine, Black tea, Earl grey, and Pu'erh tea. This should satisfy the customers for now. I also did some research on how to make coffee, so we'll be set to work the menu." Albert handed a blue credit card to Samuel, who put it back in his wallet.

"Mh. As long as you think it'll work, I'll take it."

Half an hour later, the Cafe was open with a brand new menu. There were six different teas and eight types of coffee, as well as hot cocoa.

"I don't think there's gonna be a lot of people coming here. I think we can use the tea packets as a promotional item after I get things set up. Hmm… maybe order one item on the menu, get one tea bag for free? Or buy one get two free? Is that okay?" Albert asked, staring at the boxes of tea bags in the back.

"Hmm… yeah that should be fine. The tea bags didn't cost too much, so we wouldn't be losing too much money. Right now, our main focus is to get people interested." Samuel grabbed a bag of coffee beans and tea bags, handing them to Albert. Albert took the bags and carried them to the front.

"I'll start planning advertisements. My landlord would probably visit here, and she knows a few people. That should get us a few customers for now."

"Perfect! I have a few friends as well, but they might not be too interested in a cafe. They will help spread the word, though. It might take some time to get regulars, but-"

Triing~

As they were discussing methods of advertisements, the bell on the door rang. A lady wearing a grey hoodie stepped into the cafe, looking around.

"Oh! It's you! I didn't know you were off today."

Albert waved at the lady, beckoning her towards the register.

"Haha, yeah. I saw the shop the other day and was curious about the new menu sign out front. I think I'll have a latte."

"Sure! One latte, coming right up."

Albert walked towards the coffee grinder, porter in hand, while the lady handed a credit card to Samuel.

"So… how do you two know each other?" Samuel asked, trying to figure out the card machine.

"She's the cashier for the bookstore next to us. I bought two books yesterday." Albert answered.

Vrrrrrrrrr

"By the way, I didn't get your name. Sorry about that…" Albert gave a sheepish grin as he placed the filter onto the porter.

"Haha, that's fine! I never did introduce myself. My name's Emily." she answered with a smile.

"My name's Albert. Pleasure to officially meet you, Emily."

"Pleasure to meet you. Did you get a chance to read the books yet?"

Fssssssssssss

Albert used the machine to froth the milk as the espresso shot was brewing.

"Not yet, no. I was quite busy yesterday buying stuff for the cafe. I might read it after work today, though."

"Ah well. I'll probably come back tomorrow, so tell me what you think about the books then!"

Samuel handed back the card to Emily, who took it with a smile.

"Sure!"

Albert took the espresso shot and poured the milk into the cup slowly, attempting to make a simple pattern.

"I'm quite new to this, so it might not taste as good as something that professionals make. Still, I hope you like it." Albert handed the Latte to Emily, who quickly took a seat at a nearby table.

There was definitely an attempt at latte art. Not excellent, but there was an attempt. Emily inspected the latte, then let out a chuckle and took a sip.

A tense silence enveloped the Cafe as Albert waited for Emily to give any form of response. She had her eyes closed, savoring the flavor.

"This is good! It's not as good as the coffee I've had at other cafes but it's still nice! The ratio between coffee and milk is pretty good, although there definitely could be more milk."

Albert's eyes lit up as a smile formed on his face.

"I'm glad you like it! I've been practicing a bit, so I'm glad it's paid off. A little more milk, you say… any other advice?"

"Yeah! I have a few tips. Let's see… first, for the latte art, you could-"

Albert took out a notepad and started writing while Samuel cleaned out the equipment. This continued for a few more minutes before she was done. During that time frame, she had drank about half the cup.

"Do you wanna work here? You know a lot more about coffee than I do."

"Haha no thanks. I like my job at the bookstore quite a bit. I also can't stand dealing with customers."

"But you work in retail?"

"That's different. Barely anyone comes here. It doesn't count as retail."

"You still need to deal with customers, though."

"Not as many Karens. Karens don't read."

"..."

"..."

"Ah well. I'll keep asking for advice for now. Also, I forgot to give you this. Catch!"

Albert tossed a tea packet towards Emily, who caught it with no issue.

"Why are you giving me this?" Emily asked, inspecting the packet.

"Advertisement. We're giving away a free tea bag for every purchase made since we have good tea now!"

Albert opened the tea cabinet and showed her the airtight jars of tea leaves. Next to the jars was a tea set with six cups and a kettle.

"I'm not as into tea as you are, but you seem passionate. Maybe I'll order some tea next time."

"Sure! I'll be waiting."

After a few minutes, Emily finished her coffee and left, leaving the place empty once more. Albert picked up the cup on the table and brought it to the sink, pulling out a pair of rubber gloves.

Fssssssssss

"Say, how many customers do you think we'll get today? I'd guess fifteen more customers" Samuel asked, checking the inventory.

Clink clink

"I'd say ten if I get the posts up. This place is hard to find, but at least someone should notice." Albert answered, drying the cup in his hands with a small towel.

"Makes sense, but a bit pessimistic, eh? There's definitely going to be more than ten customers. Plus, if your marketing is as good as you say, then we're definitely getting customers"

"My marketing skills aren't that good, sir. I can only do so much."

Albert sighed, shaking his head. He finished cleaning off the counter, and walked to the back to get his laptop. He walked towards a table, opening his laptop. Window startup noises could be heard from the computer.

"I'll start working on the advertisements. There probably won't be anyone for quite a while."

"Right. Try to get those out ASAP. I'll be waiting."

"Yes sir!"

Albert gave a quick salute and started typing into his computer, planning out an advertisement. In the meantime, Samuel walked to the back to check inventory and sort out finances for the store. The Cafe was near silent, with only the sounds of Albert's typing and the rare occasional customer throughout the day. By closing time, Albert had finished creating the advertisement and had posted it on his social media. There had been 10 customers through the day, no more, no less.

"I posted the ad on my social media. Hopefully that will attract some attention! We could also hand out fliers if that helps."

"I'll take it. Good job today."

"Thanks! See you tomorrow!"

Albert waved at the old man as he walked towards the stairs. He was content with the work he did today, even if it was a little slow.
