Why did Maximus look so shocked? She was puzzled. Her hair looked the same as it did the day before. Though she had to admit that she felt different. Her confidence had surged and her vision was much clearer. She wondered whether it was an effect of Bardumond's herbs. But… "my eyes!"
She yelped in shock when she saw it happen. Her eyes were transforming, the irises looking golden. Her pupils looked like a pair of red flames.
"No!" She cried out, and the mirror before her went up in flames and shattered into pieces in the next second.
"My lady?" Maximus knocked on the door when he heard her scream.
"Where is she?" Dairon was behind him before he could get a response from Jasmine. "Jasmine. Where is she and what happened to her?" He grabbed the man by the back of his robe and lifted him in the air.
"She's in there!" Maximus yelled, and sighed in relief when Dairon let him go. An angry demigod was the last thing he wanted to deal with.
Dairon kicked the door open to find Jasmine standing in the middle of the room, her hand covering her mouth with her eyes wide, and shards in front of her.
"Jasmine!" He called out in panic. She was startled, fire leaving her eyes at the same time as she turned.
"Dairon!" She panicked when she saw his clothes catch fire and searched around. "Maximus! Get a fire extinguisher, quick!"
"A what Milady?" Maximus didn't seem to understand her, infuriating her.
"A freaking fire extinguisher! Dairon is on fire!" She tried to find something to put out the fire, and found nothing which made her panic.
"Stop panicking. Come here." He smiled, making her fury intensify. Was that the kind of tone one would have when burning up? Something suddenly felt odd when he laughed.
Maximus arrived with a bucket of water which he dumped down on Dairon before they both realized what was odd. He was a demigod of water. How could he really be on fire? His clothes were burnt but he was alright. At least he looked alright.
"I told you not to panic." He laughed at Jasmine and took her away to the library.
"I broke the mirror." She was terrified as she explained what had happened in the changing cubicle. "I don't know how it happened either. I just felt…fire leave my body." Her voice lowered almost into a whisper. She thought it was crazy too.
He thought back to the shards on the floor, then back to her expression in the dining room a while ago. "It was in your eyes."
"What?" She didn't understand him.
"The fire. I saw it in your eyes." He explained to the perplexed Jasmine, whose eyes had reverted back to their normal black color. She looked pale as she stared at him in disbelief and he could only explain it to her. "In the dining room and in the second before you set me on fire."
She shut her eyes in disbelief. "This is a dream, right? It has to be a nightmare. It's… it must be."
"Jasmine…" Her hands trembled and when he took them to comfort her, he felt his own hands burn. He ignored the heat and made her look up at him. "Look at me. You have to calm down."
"Let go of me!" She defensively tried to pull away, setting him on fire again instead. "No…"
"Ignore it. I'm a demigod—I don't feel pain." He pulled her into a hug, tousling her hair. His eyes went wide when he noticed the bookshelves catching fire too. He didn't want her to see it, having gathered that it would get much worse if she didn't calm down. Should he compel her to go to sleep? He was yet to decide when he felt her body go limp. She had fallen asleep on her own, the fire gradually going off on its own.
He let out a breath of relief when he managed to put her in her bed without waking her up. He gently pulled away before going to find Maximus.
"Did you clear out the broken shards?" He asked.
Maximus shook his head in tremor. "I wanted to, but they were too hot so I didn't."
"Leave everything as it is." Dairon instructed.
Maximus nodded, still terrified after the sudden ordeal. How could someone have two different personalities? One moment she was a kind and gentle designer and in the next moment, she was setting things and people on fire. Was she even human?
Dairon went to the dressing room and touched a shard. His hand went limp from the sudden heat. He tried to pick it up but he went into a coughing fit instead, coughing out blood. He let the room flood with water before trying again, successfully taking up a large shard.
He was still studying it when it slid out of his hand as though it was being pulled away by some kind of force. The pieces joined back together, forming the mirror that was previously on the wall before it was broken.
"That's interesting." He muttered as the mirror went back to normal. It turned out that the effect of her power would be undone as long as she went into a deep sleep.
Thinking of the fact that she was asleep, he felt his head hurt. She would probably ask about what happened as soon as she woke up and he didn't know what to tell her. He should start seeking answers as soon as possible.
Luckily, she didn't wake up for the rest of the day so he sighed in relief when he checked on her for the umpteenth time, which was at night. She looked peaceful and would probably wake up the following day, so he went to sleep. However, it wasn't long before he realized how impossible it was going to be.
Ignoring the turmoil in his brain, he was in excruciating pain. His skin was alright on the outside but the inside of his chest was on fire. It was agonizing as though he was being burned layer by layer.
