Capítulo 46: I Hate You
Eden should have known her entire weekend would be terrible from the moment she was flagged down by her blind date in the parking lot and she saw the man she had hit with her shoe when she came here for her second interview. It had to be him because he was in front of the same building with that distinctive curly hair.
It was already more than a little weird to be greeted by someone she hadn't even met yet. Exactly how much had he looked at her picture to recognize her from across a few rows of parked cars?
She did her best to be polite about it though. This guy was David's friend's roommate, after all.
But seeing the shoe guy so obviously desperate to get away from her without speaking made her realize that he remembered the incident as vividly as she did. She went into the date in a state of utter mortification and it didn't really get better from there.
She was too self-conscious to fully enjoy herself even though she did love places where you could paint your own kitchenware and Aubrey and David did their best to keep the conversation flowing. At least she got good food and a cute new mug out of it.
Owen didn't seem like a terrible person despite the weird vibe he gave off in the parking lot but they didn't click. All of their conversation was perfunctory 'get to know you' things. Stiff and unnatural.
She couldn't help but compare this stilted attempt at conversation to the ones she had with Troy. Those always flowed easily no matter what they were talking about.
Ugh, she would much rather be doing this with him even though she had sworn off dating artsy types. At least it wouldn't feel awkward if he was here.
Even Aubrey could tell this date was a dud before the end because she shot Eden more than one apologetic look for bothering to set her up in the first place. She better be sorry for wasting her night like this when she had to drive down to L.A. in the morning!
She went home disheartened and tired knowing she would have to wake up early tomorrow to meet Ezra and Nadia at Universal Studios at 11 AM. Very early. Too early.
Eden got up at five and didn't even bother with makeup. It wasn't like those two would care what she looked like. She wore leggings and a t-shirt underneath a hoodie and put her hair in two French braids so it wouldn't get too messed up on the rides.
To keep herself awake, she listened to a book on tape the whole ride down, stopping only once to use the bathroom, get herself a gas station cinnamon roll, and fill up her tank. She made it to the Universal Studios parking lot with five minutes to spare.
"I hope you appreciate how much I love you," she said with a giant yawn as they approached. "If I fall asleep on you in line, don't judge me."
Ezra laughed and wrapped her in a bear hug. "If you get too tired, we can always rent you a wheelchair and push you around while you nap. We'd be able to cut in line too."
"Ez," Nadia chided as she mock punched his shoulder. "Don't tease her."
"Alright, alright. Seriously though, I'm so glad you could do this with us. It's been forever since we've gone to an amusement park together. I'll even let you pick what we ride first once we're inside."
"I want to see a show first. To give me a chance to wake up before subjecting myself to adrenaline. I might have a heart attack otherwise," Eden deadpanned.
Nadia grinned at her. "Ah, I've missed your sense of humor. We can do that. There's a really good special effects one pretty close to the park entrance. We can hit that first then maybe do something gentler like the studio tour ride."
She shot her a grateful look. Nadia was always looking out for her. She was glad to have her as an almost-sister-in-law.
This was only proved further when she vetoed Ezra's idea of sitting in the wet zone of the special effects water show, preventing them from having to walk around soaked all day. It was nice to know that somebody in that relationship could be sensible.
After the show, they did the studio tour before stopping for lunch in the Harry Potter area. They got frozen butterbeer too, which was absolutely delicious.
Everything was all well and good until they made their way to the lower lot. Ezra really wanted to go on the Jurassic Park ride, which was a water ride. They weren't able to talk him out of it this time because he loved those movies.
Eden got minimally wet until the final drop when all three of them got completely soaked through. She and Nadia were horrified but Ezra couldn't stop laughing about how awesome it was.
They spent the majority of the two hour wait for the Mummy ride inside a cool series of hallways meant to mimic a tomb. It was a super cool waiting area but not when they were cold and wet. Right now, it would be so much better being stuck in line in the sun.
"I hate you," she said flatly as she shivered.
Not only was she cold and wet, her clothes were chafing against her skin. She hadn't been this physically miserable in a while.
"Would you feel better if I got you a new jacket after this?" Ezra asked seriously.
"You're offering your sister one but not your fiancée?!" Nadia interjected. She was shivering too.
"I can get you one too! I didn't know it would be this bad. I'm sorry, guys."
He looked genuinely apologetic so they were willing to forgive him. It didn't change how terrible that wait was though. They almost couldn't enjoy what was arguably the coolest ride in the park because they were too uncomfortable.
They both got dry hoodies in the gift shop and stuck their wet shirts in the plastic bag they came in, which helped a little. Their shoes, socks, and pants were still miserably wet though and they didn't dry fully even after they left the park.
