Troy accepted the Twix wordlessly. It appeared that Eden had rendered him speechless. After what seemed like forever but was probably only thirty seconds, he responded.
"You don't need to apologize for that; all I was doing was dusting. It's not like it was that important. I have a lot of fun talking to you too. So text me. A lot. Any time after my shift is over or on my days off. I usually have my phone on me so text me. You can call me too! Just be sure to stay in touch, alright?"
She was stunned. He seemed almost too insistent. "…are you sure I wouldn't be a bother?"
"You? No way! You could never be a bother, Eden. I promise I would always be happy to hear from you. And thanks for the Twix. These are my favorite."
"I know, you told me before."
"Right…anyway we should get back before Marty catches us. You go back first while I stick these in my locker," Troy advised. "Thanks again. And don't forget to text me!"
He must really want her to text him. Okay then. Eden let out a small laugh. That was actually pretty cute.
"I won't. Take care of yourself, Troy. I won't miss this place but I will miss you."
"Text me often enough and you won't have to," he said while pulling what appeared to be finger guns. It was hard to tell with the mittens on the suit.
She couldn't help it. She started cracking up. This was the first time she had ever seen him use finger guns. She hadn't pegged him as the type but she supposed she didn't really know all that much about him to begin with.
When she finally got a hold of herself, she shot him finger guns back because she found it so hilarious. Then she started laughing all over again as she walked away, not noticing the heavy sigh as Troy leaned against the locker or what he mumbled to himself.
Text him often, huh? What a strange way to say goodbye. Maybe he was acting out of character because he was nervous. But nervous about what?
Eden ended up dismissing it. She had done what she set out to do so there was no point worrying about it anymore. All she had to do was get through the rest of the day and her crazy time here would be over.
She had only applied for this job because she was desperate. Two months had passed since graduation and she needed money to pay her bills. She had hated every minute of it until Troy came along. Then she only hated almost every minute.
He gave her something to look forward to coming to work. She would always be grateful that he helped her get through her last stretch here.
Whatever happened now…she had some good memories from Freddie's to take with her along with the bad ones. And he had said to stay in touch. She didn't know what to expect from here but at least their time together seemed to mean something to him too.
At the end of the night, Eden returned her two clean uniforms to Marty and said she would bring the one she was wearing back once she had washed it. He dismissed her rather gruffly but it seemed almost like he was actually sorry to see her go. It might have been all in her head.
She headed home and flopped onto her bed after her shower in a state of disbelief. She was actually done. She would never have to step foot in there again once she returned the last uniform. She should wash that tomorrow after going dress shopping with Aubrey.
Would tomorrow be too soon to text Troy or should she tell him about the horrors of wedding dress shopping? Would he even care about that sort of thing? He had said she could never be a bother…

Eden didn't wake up until 9:42 AM when she received a phone call from Aubrey. In her half-asleep panic, she shouted, "I didn't miss the shopping, did I?!"
Her best friend laughed. "No, but I woke you up didn't I? I guess your last day wore you out. But hey, now you never have to deal with it again! Get dressed; we're going to come pick you up in about twenty minutes. I have my first bridal salon appointment at 10:30."
After she hung up, Eden scrambled out of bed and put on a light blue sweater, skinny jeans, chocolate brown boots, and her makeup. She barely had time to tie her hair back in a simple braid before she got a text saying the Combses were outside.
All three of them had similar coloring but they didn't exactly look alike. Diana rocked a pixie cut and, as soon as her dark hair started graying years ago, she began lightening it a shade or two each year so the grays would blend in better as time passed. She was petite like Aubrey but Jennifer towered over both of them and was the curviest of the bunch.
"Hey, Eden! Long time no see," Jennifer greeted cheerfully. "You ready to endure an entire day of people arguing over dresses that look almost exactly the same?"
Eden laughed because it was true but she wasn't brave enough to voice it aloud. "Good to see you too. I'm ready for anything! Hi, Diana. How was the drive up?"
"Not bad. Jenny gave a one-woman performance of Hamilton for the first couple hours."
"Mom!"
"What? It's the truth. You managed to get the voices down pretty well," Diana insisted as her younger daughter turned beet red.
"They've been like this all morning," Aubrey mouthed at her from the other side of the backseat. Despite being older, she had been stuck in the back because she was so much shorter than her sister and could fit back here more comfortably.
Eden shook her head indulgently and laughed again before asking if the others would be meeting them there. Aubrey nodded before they both settled back in their seats to listen to mother and daughter bickering up front.
