Capítulo 19: Patience and persuasion

Avagya's assumptions took the form of rumour and spread like wildfire. Before the party was over, almost everyone was convinced that Sanchit was having a fling and the birthday celebrations was a last-minute patch-up effort by him.

Some sympathized with Myra, while the others blamed her for being so docile and homely. What's more, almost everyone agreed – like father, like son. "It is in our DNA." claimed the Raichand men.

These rumours caused a huge volcanic explosion in Myra's life when they reached the ears of her father-in-law. It added fuel to the fire and his wrath knew no bounds. First, he called up Raja Man Singh (Myra's father) to inform him of Myra's transgression and that he was breaking their marriage contract.

He expressed his disapproval of her conduct; blamed the family for not controlling their daughter. Then, he asked the lawyers to prepare the divorce papers. These papers were sent to Myra for her signatures. And then, came the orders to leave the Raichand villa.

"How could you Myra? How did you forget your position?" –the first set of reprimands came from her mother. The mother cried her heart out over her daughter's fall and her father refused to speak to her and henceforth disowned her. And the brother was stunned and furious.

"Did you not think even once of the huge risk you were taking? – scolded the brother. "How did you forget that Aryaman is a public figure? People constantly track his every move. Mind you, it will not stop here. If it leaks into media, then we are all in big trouble."

Sanchit, Myra and Aryaman were equally devastated; more so, by the way, it came out.

Aryaman pulled up his security adviser and deputy chief-of-staff. "How on earth, did they get access to my line, I thought you told me this was a private and secure line." he roared

"So it is. There is no way anyone can access it" he replied

"Then how on earth…?" He was seething in ire and writhing in pain.

"Sir, I think the access might have come from the other end, from the Raichand house. Her phone was compromised." said one of the officers.

"I agree." – said the Major, his security adviser, "I had Francis check the lines again today, it couldn't have been from here…not possible."

Aryaman called up Sanchit, "Get your lines checked man, the leak is from your end. You need to plug it."

"I have already taken care of it." Sanchit had a strong and practical mind. He was always the first to recover from any trouble. "It's ok. This had to happen anyway, it's sooner than we had thought. Let's go with the flow and stick to our plan."

Aryaman did not reply and tears flowed through Myra's eyes. "What are we going to do about Myra's family?" said Aman after careful thinking.

"Hmm. That is something to worry about," said Sanchit.

"Her father refuses to speak to me and her brother is only worried about the family name and their reputation." Aman elaborated.

"We are in a catch 22 situation there." – said Sanchit. "If I call up and say everything is fine, we are not getting divorced – it will be a lie. If I tell them the truth…"

"No…my mother will die of the shock." Myra was frenetic.

"But Myra this has to happen sooner or later!" – Aman rationaled. "The more we procrastinate, the more difficult it is going to be.

"No, it won't. I want to come to you with my family's consent. We can't begin our life by hurting the sentiments of those we love."

"What do you mean?" For the first time, Aman was afraid. he felt as if she was slipping away from him again. And that, any moment she will shut him out of her life.

"I mean that we need to work with patience and persuasion. Right now, this idea is too difficult for them to digest. But slowly and gradually we need to show them the truth behind our relationship. I am sure they will accept us."

"There is a lot of wisdom in her words." Sanchit agreed. His own past had taught him the virtue of honouring people's emotions. "Anything rash will only make matters worse. I have made that mistake once and have paid a heavy price for it."

"Then what is to be done?" Aman was becoming desperate. He did not have any conviction in Myra's philosophy because he understood her family's DNA. He knew they would never concede.

"I think we can still salvage the situation," Sanchit said after careful consideration.

"How?" Both Myra and Aman were listening attentively.

"One of our projects in London needs my constant attention. I keep hopping between Delhi and London. What if I and Myra relocate there for a while. It will assuage the fire and the rumour will die on its own."

"What do you think, Myra?" said Aman;

She wanted to buy some time before facing her father. She was still not strong enough to reason with him. And they were not mentally ready to understand the situation – she said. "I don't know, I will agree with anything you say."

"Good." – said Sanchit. "I'll make the necessary arrangements and we'll get out of here at the earliest."

"But, what about your father?" Aman asked

"Don't worry, I'll deal with him. Nobody can force a divorce. That's the best thing about any relationship. It can't begin nor can it end unless we want it to."

"What I mean is – what if he leaks the transcript or the tape?" said Aman, "he has already threatened to expose me."

"I have destroyed all the data. There is no proof left."

"But, if he has another copy of the tape…?" – Myra was worried

"My men have taken care of them. Don't worry," said Sanchit. "Aman, are you ok with the plan?"

"Not that I like it," – said Aryaman, "but I'll agree to the arrangement for the time being. But you don't forget that she needs to come to me." He warned Sanchit.

"Trust me dude, she's not my type." Sanchit mocked. "Besides, a little bit of jealousy is good for your heart. It keeps the romance alive."

"Myra, my darling," said Aman. "You need to be strong. I know it is a tough time for us, but I am with you, and we'll definitely overcome all obstacles."

Myra sighed…it broke his heart. "Darling, I can come now and take you with me right away."

"No…don't" she protested.

"Then don't be like this. Take heart in my love, I am just a phone call away. From now on, things are going to change for better. Have faith in me."

"I do…I trust you the most."

"Then cheer up and pack your bags…our life is changing for the better."
