Julian never really focused on his students. His classroom was large. Sure, but he was still able to remember every name of every student of every shift of the day. Julian just never really cared for them. He figured that taking this job as a college professor in neurology could give him time to focus on the next generation. Let the next stage of humanity take in the knowledge he had discovered in his prime years. Julian would sit at his desk staring outside his window, instead of focussing on his students. Julian did this more often than he would admit. At one point last year, a smart and kind student had sketched Julian staring at the window and gave Julian the drawing. His light brown hair that curls to the side. his mustache that coils up, wearing his rather classy dark brown suit complimenting his thin figure, his legs crossed leaning on the edge of his desk, and a stare of such longing loneliness. The sketch was perfect...
Of course, this really did just confirm to him that they really did not care for his class either. Nobody was there to learn. To them, this study of the brain was simply another test that they were "required" to pass in order to focus on other things. Meaningless things such as sports, becoming an author, or to be an actor. Julian was not here letting the world see his brilliance simply because the world naturally attracts to something flashy. Something that catches the eye in the most graphic way. Mainly because the photoreceptor proteins take a light stimulus and transfer it into neural signals. The signals then go to the hypothalamus region of the brain which then activates set rhythm in said, part of the brain which makes the person think "ooh! shiny!". Who the hell would want to know that though, right? all you need to know is that whatever is shiny is shiny.
Julian is just as human as they are, though. Archeology was something that he had always saw as "shiny". science is one way to learn but to rediscover historical artifacts that were forgotten forever ago items that were to represent an era of maybe even a different perspective in science. Nobody would have gotten anywhere if all of humanity had one perspective... Maybe not. Maybe it just depends on whose perspective...
These thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the bell ringing at the side of his class. Julian blinked a few times and realized that he had slowly drifted into slumber. He would have fallen under if it weren't for that bell ringing. The whole class had the chatter blast to maximum, as their voices began to all get muffled by their constant footsteps. The classroom door smashed open and they all exited the class. Amongst the chatter and footsteps, a student had thrown something. A crash, then a splash of clear and milky yellow liquid bled out a shattered egg on the corner of Julian's desk. It jumped Julian. The raw shock he had on his face, made the few students left in his class chuckle, snicker and laughed before they all left. Someone had egged his desk right in front of him, and he was so uncaring about his students, he wouldn't be able to determine which student had done it. He wasn't focussed on them. It was the last bell after all. He would have the rest of the day to himself before he would have to read and grade the papers of his hopeless students.
He grabbed a rag from the drawer of his desk and started to clean off the egg from his desk. As he did so, his eye had caught something shining out of the window. He looked to see a rather expensive car park. A hoodless red convertible of some aged year Julian could not care less of. The face that drove the vehicle was more eye-catching than the shine of the car. His college roommate from all those years ago. The real man who could not deny the study of archeology. The short and healthy male exited his car. His slicked back and oiled jet black hair. His cocky and crooked grin. It all was too familiar. there would be only one reason this man came to this college, of all places. Julian's colleague, Snively had come to talk. Of course, Snively was not his real name. Everyone back then just called him that since he was always deceiving someone in one way or another. He knew who he was, so he simply embraced the name as a nickname to his real name, Colin.
Julian had to get to him before Colin got to Julian. The simple-minded man was just going to cause trouble along the way. Julian left his classroom in a bit of a rush. Julian immediately B-lined it to the stairs and once there reached the ground level. Julian arrived upon the entryway of the college grounds and saw him. Colin was trying to get his slick hands on some fairly attractive student. Julian acted fast to stop this from getting any worse. Tall posture. Fake smile. Kind voice. "Come on, Snively! You can't have everything you want," Julian said firmly with a smile as fake as Snively's wig. Julian's voice was a bit deep and had a faint natural growl.
The moment Snively's eyes were away from the student, she rushed off. "Aw. You made me lose my dinner," Snively's voice was scratchy and light, bearing the thinnest English accent. His sense of humor was a bit on the darker side. Willing to make a joke like that out loud in a college. Why can't there just be one normal person anymore?
"Jesus..." Julian starts as he walks up to him for a hug before scoffing, "Here I was thinking you'd seek therapy while adventuring."
Snively chuckles as he responds, "Why? I'm happy with who I am," it was clear Snively was just mocking about the success of his latest discoveries.
The hugs broke and Julian's smile slowly starts to crack as he asked, "So... What reason could you need to see me again?"
Snively's grin just grew even more, which usually meant bad news for anyone who he'd be talking to, "I had found something you would like to hear."
The look Julian gave was a bit of an underwhelming grin. He knew whatever Snively had wished to say was out of a selfish complex. "Whatever it may be, let's relax a bit. I just left my last class and I'm just tired," Julian said as he placed his thumb and index finger to the ridge of his nose. He would exhale and glare at Snively. To which, Snively's grin shifted into a faintly more irritated grin but nodded, and accepted Julian's request. They both walked into the college building.
As they walked down the halls, Snively had peered his sickening eyes into the opened doors of the classrooms hoping to catch a glimpse of what he would describe as "A tasty treat". Anything with curvy hips and a healthy chest. Julian felt Snively's eyes all around the halls they passed, even though Snively was behind him.
"Sexual harassment is a real crime, Snively," Julian really was not going to let Snively do anything past looking at them. He's a teacher... He's obligated to prevent that.
"Come on!" Snively started with a soft cackle, "You know I wouldn't touch these bimbos. None of them is the right shape for me... Though, they do look delightful."
Julian grumbled in disgust. He never truly found anyone really attractive, especially these childish adults that he needs to educate. Sure, one or two might have an appealing figure, Julian knew who they are and what they do\done. A cute girl is a smart one. These few are deceiving, and unwarrantedly selfish. If a girl is ugly, they will fake how they look with a new skin of paint. Make themselves clowns for entertainment and selfish lust to appeal a certain somebody in their life. Again, Julian knew why the brain acts this way, but who cares?
Julian opened the next door to their right and revealed a rather cluttered and disheveled office. Julian kicked down a chair that was covered with stacks of papers and folders, then pulled it back up with the same foot. The chair was at the front of his desk. Julian then flopped onto the desk chair, behind the desk. He relaxed and crossed his legs upon the corner of his desk and interlocked his fingers, then rested his arms on his belly as he looked up to Snively. There was a moment of silence between them, as Snively stared around his office seeing how messy the place is. He showed a faintly disgruntled expression but tried to hide it behind his eager grin. Julian gave the chair he had set up a glance, Silently suggested Snively to sit. Snively did as suggested and sat on the chair.
"...Well?" Julian scoffs, waiting for Snively to explain why he is here, "Whaddya got for me?"
Snively blinked for a second and remembered "Oh, right," he shook his head somewhat trying to avoid how dirty this room was. He then leaned forward as he started, "Did you hear about the earthquakes in Zambia?" he started his story with a question that had no relevance to Julian in the slightest, but Julian did recall an article online explaining several large tremors in an area in Zambia.
Julian nods faintly "Mhm..."
"I was there when it happened..." Julian's eyes sharpened onto Snively's. Most would not admit to nearly dying, so excitedly. "I was there studying their mythology and visited Victoria Falls. I always wanted to see the waterfalls of that area. Then, it happened. The ground shook, violently. Got to my knee, so I wouldn't fall on my ass, but then I saw something shiny in the dirt", as Snively began to rustle his hand in his inner coat pocket, Julian scoffed. Annoyed by this story, already. Of course, something 'shiny' caught the eye once again and of course, someone as simple as Snively found it fascinating.
That was when Snively had pulled out the largest green gemstone he had ever seen in his life. The gem took the size of Snively's palm. At first, Julian was completely under the assumption that the gem was fake. It was shaped like a diamond but had the clear hue of an emerald. No natural gem is like that, especially if it is that large, "Pretty..." Julian boldly states. "So you found a shiny paperweight... What else?"
Snively showed real annoyance from Julian's reaction to something so big and priceless. "Ok, well I had a guy I know to take a look at this. He told me that the cut of the gems is as perfect as it can be. No initials, no code number. Nothing. Whatever this is... It's real". An eyebrow cocked from Julian's expression. So it was real and it was naturally grown. Snively continued as he stared hopelessly into the green glow of the gem, "I figured that I couldn't have been the first to find something like this and not show it off. I did some research and found out something rather intriguing."
Julian's interest started to be given as Snively kept on speaking, "Almost every mythology has a story to tell involving gems. Whether it is a curse or a gift, a god of whatever bestows a strength or power to a human by handing them a gem. In some translations, they become the gem."
Julian interrupted by agreeing with Snively, "You're right. In college, we both had an essay on Mythology. I wrote down a tale explaining how the god of time, Chronos had transformed a man named Adamas into a diamond. His body glowed like gold because the sun always shined on him. The story goes..." Julian had forgotten the rest of how the rest story went. Thankfully Snively knew the rest from his recent studies.
"The story goes that Adamas had been indestructible, unable to be poisoned, and had great fortune for the rest of his life... as the legend goes", Snively could see Julian losing himself in fascination over a simple tale. "However, other mythologies speak a similar tale. One says that a god of time had given seven stones of power to man. when all stones are found the user will glow like a god and will be given the power of time, but the journey will cause catastrophe. A different one speaks of a man finding seven crystals and being sent to a world of dreams," The look on Snively's face was of pure bliss for discovery and story. How all of these legends speak of seven artifacts giving power of some kind was very peculiar. It was as if the words of these legends could have weight behind them.
Snively continued, "I then took a longer look at the tale of Chronos and Adamas. There was a mistranslation. Chronos did not 'transform' Adamas into diamond... He had 'given' Adamas diamond".
Julian's glare soon turned into shock and confusion, "What are you saying?" Julian says, chuckling to himself, "What? That this gem you have is a mystical diamond, that if all are collected can make you invincible?" The legends were fun to hear, but for them to have any grounds in factual evidence, deemed a bit too far fetched for Julian.
Snively's stare of excited wonder soon plundered into fun annoyance, once again. He then pulled out warned out and faintly dirty compass. Snively simply circled the compass around the diamond. The arrow in the compass would point towards the opposite direction of where the diamond was at in every angle. That was not normal. The diamond would push the magnet in the compass away. Julian was truly baffled. The words just slipped through his mouth in shock, "That gem has a magnetic field... A strong one".
Snively nodded, finally saw the look from Julian that he wanted to see. "This... This right here", gesturing the green diamond in his hand, "This is why I came to you. You used to make machines when you were a scientist, ya?"
Julian's stare in the gem broke the moment he mentioned his old job. Julian was once part of a company that needed a neurologist to help make neurologically controlled prosthetics. Basically, if a soldier had lost a limb during their time serving for their country, they would have a mechanical limb replace the lost one and a thin headwear that can be hidden under a hat that reads brainwaves and moves the arm with thoughts. Julian only knew basic machinery and it had been years since he had made something like that. Julian finished Snively's sentence "You want me to see if I can converge the energy in this gem and see how much it holds".
Snively nods "I want to know how much power this battery has", he said as he reached over the desk and handed the green diamond to Julian. Julian takes it. It was heavier than expected. There was an electric sensation coursing through his fingertips as he held it. "I want to find all of them...", Snively whispers softly to Julian, "...And I want you to help me find them all".
Julian's stare at the Gem broke the moment he heard Snively state that he wanted Julian's help in finding all of these Gems. His gaze then looked to Snively in shock, "...Colin, I can't abandon my responsibilities for the sake of a cool concept".
"Oh, don't be so stupid!" Snively barks in his simple smile. "Be honest, Julian... This place?" his eyes peer around their surroundings then stare into Julian's eyes, "This isn't where you waste the rest of your life... You have no connection here. Sure you had hopes and dreams when you enrolled as a professor. This?" Snively smacks a bunch of papers off his desk. Julian looks at the paper's fall, but gave no genuine reaction to it falling thus, proving Snively right "You don't want to be here..."
Julian was silent for the moment. He was right... This hell Julian had been living was making him miserable beyond conception. Yes, his dreams had left him years ago, but it is unsure if hope had abandoned Julian as well. He wanted to think it over, but it is clear Snively was not going to wait for long. Julian reached over the desk and gestured Snively to take the Gem back. Snively waved his hand in rejection of his offer.
"You can hold onto it," Snively said with confidence.
Julian hesitantly pulled back his hand, unsure why he was letting him hold the gem. "...W-what?"
"I know you're going to be coming along..." Snively stood and looked down at Julian just sitting there, "...It's just taking you a bit longer to realize that you want to come. I'll be in my car. Go ahead and start packing". The confidence this scumbag left off was palpable as he walked out of Julian's office.
Again. That annoying prick was right and he knew it. Julian took a heavy sigh as he looked around his office... A dark and hopeless room full of books, papers, files, a desk, and a few chairs. There really was nothing for him here. Looking outside the office was just making it more and more obvious. Nobody outside likes him, not even the other teachers were caring for him. Students he fails to educate are just here and gone before he realizes it and they are worse than having kids. eventually or immediately you love your offspring, but these underaged scum just think of Julian as an obstacle to hurdle over. There is no one here for his sake, so why should he be there for their sake? The end result came a lot faster than expected. He is no longer wasting his life for failures and children.
Julian exited his office and watched Snively walk away. This was his next life. He knew he had to be committed to it forever. There is no going back after this. He was completely aware, His life would change forever...
