Capítulo 4: Lifesaver

It only took a little over an hour to fly between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Normally, Maya didn't act impulsively, but when it came to her sister, all logic was thrown out the window, so she immediately jumped on the next available flight.

Delilah Yeung was her younger sister; her younger identical twin sister. Even though they were merely born 20 minutes apart and their personalities were completely different, Maya always felt it was her responsibility to protect her sister. So when she heard that she was in the hospital due to a serious accident, she immediately caught the next flight to Las Vegas without any hesitation. Sure, she was no doctor and she didn't have the skills to help, but she did share 100% of her DNA with her sister; if needed, she was ready to donate her blood or even an organ to save her life. Besides, she was currently unemployed and had nothing tying her down anyway…

But when she arrived at Sunset Hospital in Las Vegas and found her way to her sister's room, she was surprised to see that, apart from a bandage around her ankle and some tape on her nose, Delilah Yeung was perfectly fine. How was this serious? Why did Delilah's friends tell her to fly there immediately?

Perhaps…she should have asked these questions before she hopped onto the plane…

"You're finally here!" Delilah exclaimed when she saw her sister.

Sam and Tiffany looked at Maya in surprise. "Wow! You really do look exactly the same!" Sam gasped. Apart from the length and color of their hair, he couldn't pick out any other differences.

Although Sam and Tiffany had been friends with Delilah since the 5th grade, they had never seen Maya. In fact, they never knew Delilah even had a sister, let alone a twin.

The truth was, Maya and Delilah's biological parents had divorced when they were just 7-years-old. At that time, both parents wanted custody of the twins, but in the end, their father selflessly handed them over to their mother because she came from a wealthy background and he believed she had the ability to give them a good life.

However, on the day that Father Yeung left, he found his daughter, packed and waiting for him in the car. "Daddy, I don't want you to be alone…"

At just 7-years-old, little Maya could sympathize with her father and knew how heartbroken he was to leave on his own, so she offered to go with him. Seeing that his daughter was so smart and understanding, he couldn't bear to send her back to her mother again, so he agreed to take her with him.

"Make sure you take good care of Mommy. I will make sure that Daddy is fine," Maya reassured her sister just before she left.

With that…the twins were separated for 18 years…

Father Yeung was an American-Chinese who had moved to Hong Kong after he married the twins' mother, so he naturally returned to his family in New York after their divorce and took Maya with him. The twins led very different lives after that and most of the people around them either forgot they were twins or were completely unaware of the fact. Even Delilah's stepfather had only heard his wife mention Maya once or twice and barely remembered the existence of the child. To him, she was like a mythical character in a story that he never expected to meet.

In fact, there were times when he even forgot that Delilah was not his biological child. If not for the surname that she kept from her father, there was nothing to remind him that the child was not his.

During their first few years apart, the twins wrote letters to each other. Mainly, it was Maya checking whether her younger sister was leading a good life and whether she was being bullied.

Later, as technology advanced, they began to send emails…and further down the track, social media took over.

But, even though it became easier to contact each other, their conversations no longer had any substance and they actually drifted further and further apart. Even so, Maya never stopped caring about her sister.

As Maya stepped into the hospital room, she ran up to her sister in confusion. "A-Are you OK?" she asked as she scanned her eyes up and down the young woman.

Delilah rolled her eyes in response. "No! I was crossing the road and some idiot almost ran me over! Some guy pulled me back and my heel snapped, causing me to twist my ankle...and fall flat on my nose..." she replied in an annoyed tone. "The doctor said my nose is broken and will take, at least, 3 weeks to completely heal. Where's the guy that pulled me anyway? I want him to pay for my medical bill. He should have held onto me properly!"

Sam and Tiffany glanced at each other guiltily. In reality, Delilah was quite drunk when they left the pool party that afternoon and she had stumbled onto the road without looking; it was not the driver's fault at all nor the stranger who happened to witness the scene. If he didn't run out and pull Delilah back, they would probably be organizing their best friend's funeral right at that moment.

But, of course, Delilah was too drunk to remember that.

The young woman rubbed her head and groaned. Not getting a response from her friends, she returned her focus to her sister, "Forget about that. I'm so glad that you came. You're a lifesaver!"

Maya was confused again when she heard this. How could she be a lifesaver when there was nothing to save? Apart from a broken nose, her sister was alive and well.

That was when Delilah finally got to the point, "Maya, I told Sam and Tiffany to call you here because I really need your help with something…"

"You see, I have a blind date tomorrow night and I need to bring the guy back to Hong Kong for our engagement party in three weeks."

"Maya, I need you to attend this blind date on my behalf…and make sure Lucas Lee marries me no matter what."

Maya froze for a moment before she realized what her sister had said.

"What?!" she exclaimed.

Delilah grabbed onto her sister's hand and pouted. "Please Sis, my entire future depends on this. Lucas has always been my dream guy and I've admired him for a long time. It's my goal in life to marry him. I flew all the way from Hong Kong to attend this blind date and I wanted to leave a good impression with him. Moreover, his father has already approved of us and is preparing our engagement party in Hong Kong as we speak. I can't disappoint an elder. He might have a heart attack if he finds out that I've failed," she said, trying to sound pitiful while hiding the fact that she was only after Lucas Lee for his money and status.

She then pointed to her nose as tears formed in her eyes, "I can't go to the blind date looking like this; I'm going to scare him away. Please, Sis, I need you to pretend to be me."

"Just until I recover..."
