Capítulo 3: Chapter 2: The Powerless Orphan

Entrance Examination Hall: Physical Division

After the nerve-wracking written exam, I sluggishly went to the city-like simulation for the Physical Division. We were told to put our previous high school's PE uniform for the physical examination.

"Aw man! I'm drained... I'll just rehydrate and get my strength back!"

I quickly drank water and started walking towards the entrance door. Some people saw me enter and started whispering at each other as I walk through the crowd.

"Hey, isn't that Dayle?"

"What's he doing here?"

"He's taking the exam you numbskull!"

"What? Is he serious?"

"What's wrong with it?"

"Didn't you know? He's the only one in our class who has no powers!"

"Huh? Does he think he'll pass the exam when all his enemies have abilities?"

"Let alone being a hero!"

"OUT OF THE WAY, TRASH."

Their gossips were suddenly interrupted by a scary tall student with a tanned skin and a blonde hair. He looked extremely angry. One look on his face and everyone started shivering in fear. He shouted,

"ARE YOU DEAF? I SAID OUT OF THE WAY!"

"Eeek! We're sorry!"

Everyone hastily distanced themselves away from the scary man.

Woah, what a scary person.

I went to the side to warm up. Some of the students are warming up as well. I was given a round sticker with a number 13 to put on my chest. Others were also given their exam numbers.

The announcer from earlier cheerfully spoke from the speaker and told us to form a horizontal line towards the entrance, indicating that the exam is about to start.

[ Good morning examinees! Welcome to the Entrance Examination Hall for the Physical Division. If you may please line up facing the vicinity door, our staff will distribute your white flags that you will have to protect until you reach your finish line. ]

We were given small white flags to hold onto and it's up to us how to protect it.

[ The estimated time for reaching the finish line is based on the capacity of a normal human to run through. Everyone has their chance choose either to protect or steal flags from each other. Until next time, Do your best and we wish you all good luck! ]

I braced myself as the large metal door to the vicinity slowly opens. Still, I couldn't ignore those weird stares coming from some students. Some of them stare at me with pity, while some of them looks at me with ridicule.

[ Ready... Set... START! ]

I quickly ran inside, hoping to get to the finish line as soon as possible. Everyone ran inside with me, having their own goals in mind.

We were told that taking flags from others would increase your exam points, making it easier to climb up to higher sections. I don't particularly mind having to attend a lower section, as long as I get to pass and graduate to a hero course and take the hero exam.

Well, it's not like I'm confident I'll win against them. They all seemed so eager to pass....

...

Wait, what am I thinking?!? I'm going to become a hero like my parents!

"Go away, negative thoughts!"

I loudly shouted as I brush off my nervousness.

Boom!

There was a loud explosion heard from afar. Some students must've started fighting.

[Student number 3 has been eliminated]

As I jump from one rooftop to another, a knife was suddenly thrown at me before I can even land on my foot. I quickly rotated my body backwards, dodging the knife at the last second.

"Woah! what?"

My foot landed on the edge of the rooftop and almost fell to my death.

"Pfft. Hahahahaha! I'm surprised you even dodged that."

A long, brown-haired man suddenly appeared at the building from my back with a ridiculing smirk.

I angrily looked at the man, then I jumped forward again, leaving the man behind me.

No use listening to these kinds of people, he probably wanted to get my flag because he heard I was the most powerless in battles.

"Woa- Hey! Don't ignore me!"

As I continue to jump, a portal suddenly appeared in front of me and sucked me in.

"Ack!-"

I roughly landed inside one of the buildings. The man is there, waiting for me.

So he has teleportation ability, huh.

"Why, you! I was being nice to you back there and you just ignored me!"

He madly ranted me for ignoring him. I looked at him in disbelief saying,

"Is that so? 'Cause I don't think throwing a knife at someone and taunting him is counted as being nice."

"Do you think I don't know you?!? You're just a powerless orphan dreaming you can be anything like a hero. Everyone pitied you for even being born, you know that? Do you think you can beat me? Know your place trash!"

He lashed at me with a knife in his right hand. I placed my hands forward facing each other, as if wanting to clap. I hit his wrist with both of my hands, making him drop his knife. I quickly pulled his hand toward me and hit his chin with my palm, knocking him unconscious.

"I'm sorry."

I bowed and apologized to the man for hitting him. I was about to leave when I caught a glimpse of the man's white flag, almost falling out of his jacket. I blankly stared at it, and then made up my mind and walked away.

More and more people have finished the exam. Some students who lost their flags has been eliminated to the exam and some decided to forfeit.

[Student number 17 has been eliminated]

As I proceed to run towards the finish line, more and more people tried to attack me. I did everything I could to fend them off or dodge them, sometimes hitting them if necessary.

"Argh! What's with this guy?!? I can't hit him!"

"Didn't they say he has no powers?!?"

"Out of the way! His flag's mine!"

As I try to fight my way out of the 3 examinees, my foot was caught by a grape vine.

"Aackk!!!"

I fell to the ground and is dragged away by the vine. I was lifted upside down, facing a rather creepy-looking woman. She started laughing hysterically as I struggle my foot out from the vine's grasp.

"Kekekekekekeke!"

I pulled a dagger out of my belt bag and sliced through the vine, freeing myself and falling to the ground.

"You little-!"

The woman became furious, and started attacking me with her vines. I dashed forward, hoping to escape from the woman's sight.

The woman noticed another student trying to take her flag from behind, she caught him with her vines. I was going back to help when the woman took the man's flag and threw him away directly to the nearest exit door.

[Student number 14 has been eliminated]

I proceeded to run through the road towards the finish line. I encountered some students who were using their powers to advance, and some running on foot as well.

7 minutes left, I'm almost at the end. Some students are already there, waiting for other students. I was running toward the finish line when the floor suddenly collapses, capturing everyone inside the manhole.

"Hahahahaha! Goodbye, losers!"

The man happily shouted at us as he rushed towards the finish line. Some of us managed to climb up while others started to panic. I jumped from one debris to another and climbed up. The others shouted for help, but the students just passed by without even looking at them.

5 minutes left.

Argh!

"Here, take my hand!"

I offered my hand to the people inside the pit, they hesitated to take it.

"Hurry! We don't have time!"

A blue-haired man took my hand and I pulled him up. He thanked me afterwards and we proceeded to pull one person up after another. We helped each other get out until all of us were back on the road.

2 minutes left.

We dashed to the finish line as the time runs out. I started to feel dizzy and I fell on my knees, breathing heavily from exhaustion. The man I helped earlier went back and asked me,

"Hey man, are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. You can go on."

"Wai- are you sure-"

"Go! Now!"

I shouted at him. The man stood up startled, then said,

"O-okay."

He started running again. I slowly rose up, feeling all wobbly.

1 minute left.

With the distance I have towards the end line, I won't be able to make it by running in my state. Determined, I hastily ran toward the finish line. I pulled out a climbing rope from my belt bag as I race through time.

45 seconds.

I swinged the part of the rope with the hook and ran faster.

30 seconds.

I swinged the rope faster as I go near the finish line.

15 seconds.

I threw the rope towards the sign board [FINISH LINE], hoping for the hook to make it.

10 seconds.

The hook hanged itself to the sign board, as I pull it again to test its sturdiness.

6 seconds.

I jumped high and gripped the rope hard. I swinged myself towards the finish line as the students move away from the front.

3 seconds.

2 seconds.

1 second.

I landed inches beyond the finish line and collapsed to the floor. The bell rang indicating the exam has finished.
