Nathan tightly gripped the steering wheel; the interior of the car was eerily quiet.
The engine roars of passing vehicles outside the car window seemed unusually clear. The misty drizzle kissed the window, as if constructing an invisible barrier between each passing vehicle, enclosing them within separate worlds. This quietness felt somewhat alien to Nathan.
Adjusting his position slightly, Nathan glanced at the rearview mirror. He saw Renly seated in the back, casually crossing his legs and placing his hands neatly in front of him. His gaze was fixed outside the window, revealing only a profile. Seemingly casual, this simple motion exuded an elegance that emanated from within. It was a natural grace that Nathan somewhat envied.
"Ahem." Nathan cleared his throat cautiously. "Was the flight smooth?"
Renly turned his head, meeting Nathan's gaze. Through the reflection in the rearview mirror, he could see a hint of unease on Nathan's face. His eyes were scrutinizing, each word carefully weighed. This reminded Renly of the time when Nathan worked under Mr. Fisher.
"It was smooth all the way." Renly offered a smile. Then he asked, "You arrived two days in advance and had contact with the crew? How does it feel?"
Renly's friendliness encouraged Nathan, easing the tension on his face and making his speech flow more smoothly.
"They're friendly, truly friendly, and quite enthusiastic. This shoot is estimated to last four weeks, and they've rented a large set of apartments for you to stay in. These apartments will also serve as Adam's on-set residence, allowing you to better immerse yourself in the role. However, they also mentioned that if you're concerned about noise or if your personal space isn't being respected, you can move to a hotel anytime. It's all up to you..."
Because this collaboration had come about quite suddenly, there might be some discrepancies in communication between the crew and Renly's team. That's why Nathan had arrived two days early to prepare, confirming the details of their collaboration, including accommodation.
Nathan rambled on, once he opened the floodgates, his words flowed incessantly. However, Nathan's voice was not intrusive; his smooth tone carried a hint of youthful innocence, rounded and clear. Accompanied by the pattering rain outside the window, his voice added a warm liveliness to the atmosphere.
Renly turned his head again, gazing at the scenery outside the window as his thoughts expanded within the misty haze.
In Renly's impression, Seattle seemed closely tied to the rainy season. For much of the year, the city was covered in rain. Yet, this Seattle lacked some of the cold aloofness of New York and the somberness of London. The elegance and grace within the mist bestowed a unique charm upon the city, inducing an urge to run in the drizzle.
Renly wasn't particularly fond of this kind of bourgeois sentimentality or literary demeanor. He neither enjoyed running nor did he have a fondness for rain, let alone both combined.
Compared to rain, he preferred sunlight – the dry scent of rock climbing, the scorching heat of the sea while surfing, the uninhibited thrill of skateboarding – those were his passions.
However, today, at this moment, an unstoppable impulse surged within Renly's heart, thrashing and colliding within his chest. He wasn't sure whether this was Chu Jiashu's sentiment, or Adam's, or perhaps even the unfamiliar Will's, but the fact remained: in this fraction of a second, he wanted to run in the continuous drizzle.
He couldn't fathom the source of this impulse now, perhaps he would understand after giving it a try.
"... All the other actors in the crew have arrived, and everyone is full of enthusiasm..." Nathan continued to talk enthusiastically. Renly didn't stop him, which was a positive signal. This seemed to invigorate Nathan's thoughts as he shared more about the crew, helping Renly gain an early understanding.
Suddenly, Nathan heard Renly's words, but they were spoken softly. Nathan was momentarily puzzled, hesitating and then paused. Through the rearview mirror, he looked at Renly with a questioning gaze. As expected, Renly spoke again, "Park on the side of the road."
Nathan was bewildered, not understanding the meaning behind Renly's words.
Renly had to repeat himself, "I'm saying, park on the side. I plan to get out and run for a bit."
Why? Nathan felt like his head was filled with question marks, completely unable to comprehend. "The house the crew rented is about two miles from here. It'll take you about five minutes to get there."
Two miles, which was approximately three kilometers.
Renly nodded, satisfied with the distance. "Here's the plan: after I get out of the car, you lead the way up ahead, and I'll follow behind you running. I'll run from here to the house."
Nathan's mouth gaped open, completely unable to comprehend. But he still parked the car by the roadside, turned around, looked at Renly before him, hesitated for a while, then suppressed all his doubts and asked with concern, "Renly, are you okay?"
Renly didn't answer, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth and then subsiding. He half-jokingly said, "Lead the way up ahead, just make sure not to take a wrong turn."
Having said that, Renly opened the car door and got out.
The drizzle in Seattle wasn't heavy, more like fine strands of cow hair floating down, gentle and lightweight. The temperature wasn't as chilly as imagined, compared to Boston's biting cold winter rain, this light rain carried a hint of warmth, almost as if one could smell the sunlight.
Today, for the flight, Renly had changed into casual attire: a light gray long-sleeved t-shirt paired with deep blue jeans, topped with a light blue cap t-shirt, and finally draped in a long black windbreaker. Now, Renly left the windbreaker on the back seat, pulled down the cap of the cap t-shirt, closed the car door, and without any hesitation, began to jog.
Nathan stared at Renly's departing figure, his eyes widened, pausing for about half a second before regaining his senses. He hurriedly released the handbrake, started the car again, and followed behind, leading the way. He glanced at the rearview mirror, then saw Renly jogging with dedication. He wasn't joking; he was genuinely jogging.
Renly could feel the firmness of the ground under his feet, his steps light and steady. The fresh air carried a slight coolness, sweeping into his nostrils and mouth, clearing his chest a bit. The indescribable heaviness and oppression seemed to ease slightly.
A gentle breeze brushed against his face, and the rain mist approached, but instead of falling on his cheeks, it flowed along the direction of the airflow, and even deep within his pupils, he could clearly see those sparkling rain strands. Then, according to the rain strands, he captured the path of the gentle breeze. The peripheral vision of grass green gradually infused into dark green. A faint fluorescent light floated in the gaps between rain fog and treetops, as if playful spirits were gliding within.
The world transformed into a different scene in his eyes.
The rain strands quickly soaked his clothes and seeped through his coat. The skin's surface could feel the contracting dampness, somewhat stifling. His body seemed to grow heavier, but the smile at the corner of his mouth couldn't help but gently curve upwards. His steps quickened, the sound of the wind became distinct, the rain strands denser, and his heartbeat intensified. It was as though he could spread his arms lightly and take flight.
Renly pushed his cap backward, tilted his head up, and bathed in the rain strands. He gradually seemed to vanish into this light rain, reveling in the exhilaration, freedom, and comfort. Every muscle in his body could feel it distinctly: his feet, his hands, his chest, his brain...
In that moment, he truly felt the vitality coursing through his body, clearer than ever before. Not because of running, but because of this rain.
Nathan watched as Renly's pace increased and he ran more effortlessly. Unknowingly, a smile formed on Nathan's lips, to the point where he almost forgot about their destination. After driving past three or four parking spaces, he realized it and quickly rolled down the window, shouting, "Renly! Renly! We're here!"
But he was a little late. Renly didn't stop. With a "whoosh", he sprinted ahead and continued without stopping, heading toward the end of the street. Now Nathan was at a loss. He shouted again on instinct, "Renly!"
Should he drive over and call Renly back? But what if that gave Renly the wrong idea, thinking the finish line was elsewhere? Should he get out of the car and run after Renly? But Renly was really fast. It seemed impossible to catch up!
In the blink of an eye, Nathan's mind raced with countless thoughts. Before his brain had time to make a decision, he got out of the car, closed the door, and immediately started running, heading straight after Renly.
"Nathan! Nathan!"
Nathan had only run a few steps when cries sounded from behind. He urgently braked and saw that Renly's footsteps stopped at the street corner. He turned around and ran back.
Only then did Nathan breathe a sigh of relief. He turned around and saw Seth Logan standing on the steps of the apartment entrance, along with Will Rutherford.
"Uh... what's going on?" Seth was baffled, looking at Nathan in confusion. His gaze kept scanning the surroundings, then he saw Renly coming from a distance. Due to the rain mist, he couldn't be sure, and his gaze wandered uncertainly.
Nathan spread his hands, a look of innocence on his face, indicating that he also didn't know how to explain.
In the midst of their conversation, Renly had jogged back. He stopped in front of the house's steps. "Good afternoon, Seth."
Seth looked at Renly, who was disheveled and drenched, his entire body wet. His slightly curled short hair was a mess, no longer styled, just casually pushed back. A radiant smile adorned his handsome face. The eyes hidden within the rain fog twinkled with a glimmer, instantly silencing the whole world.
Seth seemed to freeze, no sound came out. Renly, however, paid no mind. A commotion reached his ears, and following the sound, he saw a cluster of heads gathered on the windowsill. Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas, and others – familiar yet unfamiliar faces – crowded together.
Renly raised his hand and waved, a brilliant smile on his face as he greeted, "Hey."
