Capítulo 12: Vittoria Vici - Bound Until Death

Flower petals the color of yellow float down to greet me as I walk through the archway. I can hear a flute playing softly, not something I would have picked for a wedding but I suppose it isn't really up to me. Still, it's nice. A woman's voice dances in the air as I walk deeper into the area.

Looking over to the front area I can see two people sitting in chairs, both wearing the ceremonial robes. How very unfortunate for the man. Making my way past the two, I hear someone call after me.

"Hello! Welcome to the reception, I'm so happy you could make it!" A sweet voice finds its way into my ears and I turn in their direction. The blushing bride herself extends a hand out to mine and I watch as she shakes it firmly. Looking up to meet her eyes, a smile settles on my face.

"I had hoped to be here earlier but it seems that fate chose otherwise," I place a hand over hers and shake her hand in turn.

"Oh that's fine! You're in time to hear my speech," She pauses. "The guests are all mingling right now so go ahead and find yourself a place to sit, the festivities have only just begun!" A smile rests on her face and she pulls her hand away from mine, resting it in her husband's.

I nod and turn away from the two. There aren't many seats, most of them are filled by what looks like friends and family. I begin walking down the aisle towards the back, an easy place to disappear. People speak all around me, laughing and drinking. Some are clearly drunk and they dance with each other while somehow managing to continue standing.

Sitting down, I observe my surroundings. My entrance stands to the right of me, a door that opens to stairs leading up to a balcony where I have left my tools for this contract. My escape hasn't been fully secured yet, but I'm sure I'll receive a message soon.

"Mind if I sit here?"

My thoughts are interrupted and I look up to find a man standing next to me. He wears a brown robe, and seems to be starting to bald.

"Yes, of course." I scoot away from him, giving him space to sit down. If there's going to be some time before she starts her speech I may as well spend it speaking with guests.

"I'm Rorlund, it's nice to meet you." He extends a hand out to me, and I do the same.

"I am Ghel, a pleasure."

"Beautiful day, is it not?" he smiles as he looks around at all the scenery, petals floating down like feathers. "I helped with the decorating, I'm glad to see that they didn't change it."

I sit quietly and observe him as he continues to speak. He seems a happy man, and looks to be a priest. Maybe he is the one that blessed the two of them?

"Marriage is a sacred unity between two people, a bond made to last forever."

"I agree, marriage is a wonderful thing. To find someone who loves you as much as you love them is something rare." He smiles at my response and nods his head.

"That's good to hear." He pauses. "Whose side of the family are you from?"

"Oh! I don't know either of them," He gives me a confused look. "I had heard that this marriage was one of an alliance and thought it would be a nice change of pace to view it. I know it sounds strange..."

"No, it's not strange at all. If I wasn't a priest I'm sure that would be my reason for coming here as well." He glances down. "I can't help but notice that you do not have a ring on your finger, but you also do not wear an amulet. Have you ever thought about marriage?"

I feel my body tensing up and do my best to relax it before answering.

"I thought about it a long time ago, however I don't think it's really meant for me."

"Oh..." There's a silence. "It was not my intention to bring up painful memories, I apologize."

"No it's fine, I know you didn't mean any harm. It was a long time ago anyway."

I sit in silence, and he does the same. I can tell he's trying to come up with something to take away the awkwardness but it doesn't seem like he's able to. The only thing that fills the silence are the voices of the other guests laughing and their feet hitting the stone. The lady's humming still dances as the flute player keeps playing. The petals of yellow flowers still fall, and I can hear a child complaining.

I should be getting in position anyway, her speech is about to begin. I stand and brush the petals off of my dress, then start to walk away.

"I sincerely hope I didn't make you uncomfortable," he chirps. I laugh as I respond.

"I'm just getting a better view."

Opening the door, I am faced with a winding staircase. I step inside and close the door behind me. Little to no light guides me up the stairs, so I choose my footing carefully. Once I reach the top, I step out onto the balcony. Looking at the flooring I can see the bow and arrow I left up here just yesterday. I'm forgetting something. I know it. I look up and see Vittoria stand with her husband, both of them walking toward the door leading to the balcony directly above them. She's going to give her speech soon and I'm forgetting something.

They disappear behind the door as something falls from my hair and onto my hand. Looking down, I see that it's a flower petal. Of course! How could I forget about that?! I pull my satchel off of my hip and pull out the nightshade flower. Picking up the arrow, I begin to wrap the flower around the fletching and look over the edge of the balcony. I spot Veezara in the center of the crowd, holding a small glass vial. That must be what Gabriella was working on.

"Good friends and neighbors," A voice calls out. I look back up to my target and she stands hand in hand with her husband. "My husband, Asgeir, and I..." her voice trails off as I focus on lining up my shot. The throat is generally a good place to aim, it hasn't failed me yet. I inhale deeply and hold my breath.

"..sharing the love that we have for each other," I exhale slowly and finally release the bowstring from my grip. The arrow whistles through the air, and it's like time has slowed down. I watch as it cuts into her jugular, and Vittoria struggles to move. I can see the man next to her turning his head to look at her, and the fear settling in his eyes. The second after it makes contact Veezara drops the vial on the ground and crushes it. A dense fog spreads like a wildfire and I jump off the balcony onto the ground where people have begun to scream. I hear a man scream 'Vittoria' and I feel someone grabbing my wrist and jerking me closer to them. I can't see them, but the whisper gives away his scaly identity.

"Escape through the Southern Gate, I'll take care of anyone that tries to follow you." Something covers the entirety of my body and the second he loosens his grip on me I run for the exit of the plaza. There are movements all around me and I see hands reaching towards me only for them to quickly disappear. Veezara's quick to stand by his word.

I push through the gate just as it closes down behind me. Keeping the cloak around myself, I take a left and dash into the residential area of Solitude. Turning right, I head towards the tower connected to the bridge. The second I step foot inside, I close the gate behind me and sprint down the steps leading to darkness. My footsteps echo throughout the cave as I sprint towards the light at the end of the tunnel.
