Capítulo 54: Spotlight#61: Simon Sues

Welp looks like it's the special time of year again. Time to celebrate All Hallows' Eve with a ghastly WEBTOON. But before we begin, I have a question, do you think lawyers have souls? Let's find out as we dive into the court-ordered supernatural thriller Simon Sues by Myung Hee Kim.

Summary

Enter Simon Sinclair, an intelligent yet kind-hearted student at law (ain't that an oxymoron) who seemingly can't be stopped. But after a chance occurrence, Simon gets thrown to a literal hell on earth. Around every corner, supernatural contracts plague both the innocent and the guilty, with the demons behind them being able to hide from all forms of the law. Realizing the whole new world in front of him, Simon decides that he will be the one to give the demons a fair trial as he sends them off to hell.

Characters

Simon: Our titular character, Simon, is a rather interesting mc. Whether it be the crushing expectations of his school, and personal demons (both figurative and literal), Simon is never down and out. He will never back down from a fight as he spends most of the series trying to fight the demons on civilized terms. However, Simon is also an emphatic man, constantly putting his sanity, soul, and body on the line for complete a-holes undeserving. Despite all that, though, Simon is still a man with his demons, ones that both plague and fuel him.

Hallie: One of the few people fighting against the demons, Hallie has both immense hatred and fear of them. Because of this, she is almost always standoffish, aggressive, and cautious of the world but still tries to hold on to her humanity. She hopes to try and learn more about the demons in an attempt to survive their eventual takeover.

Overview

Simon Sues has both a realistic and manga-like art style that gives the series a dark yet bold feeling. The demons in particular shine as they are often portrayed in ethereal, demonic bodies with plenty of reds and eyes to give them a sense of intimidating unknown but alien aura around them. Horrific imagery is this story's forte through a combination of animal, human, and devilish features that can make your skin crawl. In general, though, the Simon Sues is rather dark, with the contracts and demons playing a big role in making each case both tragic and damning. The series starts as a slow burn with a lot of reread value as the concept of the contracts get further expanded through the various characters(human and demon-like).

I originally thought this would be a concept like Ace Attorney or Bright, but I instead got Supernatural with many twists. Through the contracts, this series does a good job of showing off human nature. Many of the victims in the story are troubled, mean, spiteful, or just plain relatable. No one in this series is innocent, not even our main characters, which makes their rise into becoming better people all the more impactful. Simon's struggles are both multilayered and personal, so despite not saying much, Simon already feels like a real man. This webtoon shows off repeatedly that while people can be awful at times in moments of weakness, we aren't an inherently cruel race. Given 2020's current climate, I can say that that's worth supporting.

Epilogue

Overall I think Simon Sues is a webtoon that is just brimming with untapped potential and perfect for the holiday season. However, much like last year, I have to say that this webtoon can't be scarier than real life is right now. Simon Sues, despite its fancy premise, is a story of resilience and compassion for your fellow man, which is something we need right now. But with this case done, let's put a spotlight on another webtoon.
