Capítulo 314: tracking progress (1)
In a dark room, about a dozen figures are sitting around a long table. On a large screen multiple maps are displayed. One map is being displayed more prominently with a smaller red diagonal cross marking an accident on the tracks, a red area marking a length of another track, and one large red diagonal cross marking a structure titled station three.
"As you can see here, the reported location where the Galahead nearly derailed and the estimated length of track where we lost contact with the Bovine are located in the same quadrant. Station three is also the station closest to both these incidents.
"Due to the lockdown we were unable to get any more detailed intel so please be aware that the following is mostly based on conjecture and experience values from cases so far. A request for an in depth investigation of the incident sites has already been submitted and the results will be distributed once we have them.
"We suspect that there was a unique monster with earth magic responsible for the creation of the roadblock. Based on marks found on the Bovine's remains, we believe it was a unique orc that led a band of orcs to attack the train.
"Coupled with a divine intervention from the dungeon master the train was successfully taken over. The zombies created by that divine intervention were also what allowed the train to be used by the monsters. However, no orc corpses were found on the Bovine. Due to the sudden emergence of the earth ramp, it's likely that the unique monster was on the engine that almost dropped onto the station. Corpses of unique monsters are usually retrieved by the dungeon master before we can reach them so that was no surprise.
"With the band of orcs still at large and the appearance of a second unique monster of the newly discovered sanguine variant, the station masters have ordered a full lockdown. Station three has also sustained heavy damage with their comms room being completely destroyed and two of their gates unusable. Thanks to the early repair train sent by station one, they somehow managed to keep the station operational but all traffic has been halted for now."
"Thank you, secretary. We all knew how… challenging this undertaking would be when we decided to put our plans into action. The white tower is a dungeon of the highest danger rating. We all knew that conquering it would not go smoothly. I implore you all to remain steadfast as we work through this and victory will be ours!"
"With all due respect, chairman, you can give as many inspiring speeches as you want but the ministry of finance can't keep up this expense! We are already diverting all available funds to this project and the repair costs for an entire station will be astronomical! As the minister of finance I must demand this project be shut down before our coffers are drained!"
"Finance is right. We from the ministry of work have been facing increasing difficulties regarding the recruitment of engineers, communication officers and train crew members. Specialized personnel simply won't want work in a dangerous environment such as a dungeon. Adding the recent increase in danger shown by the Bovine being taken over and a station being breached… the financial incentive necessary to keep up recruitment will go way above our budget."
"Hmm, I hear you and I want to thank the ministers of both finance and work for their dedication so far. Has the ministry of education made any progress on producing more engineers, communication officers and train crew members?"
"Sigh… first of all, mister chairman, it's ministry of health, education and transportation. We are busy enough without this project being dumped on us. As for the additional workforce we were asked to provide, training is going well but our surveys indicate little intention of the newly trained personnel to work in a dungeon. They simply do not feel safe.
"In an attempt to increase their confidence and therefore their willingness to sign up for dungeon related recruitments, I have prepared a proposal. We will definitely be going above budget but I believe it is the cheapest available option for the time being.
"According to a second round of surveys, most graduates would be willing to enter a dungeon if they received specialized survival training. Such a training should include general knowledge and ways for an ordinary person to stay alive until rescue comes.
"No such training is currently available as everything dungeon related is tailored to adventurers. For your information we looked into training adventurers to be specialized personnel but no adventurer wants to spend three years studying to get a job that pays less than their current one.
"After extensive searching, we have found a company that has recently begun to promote a training program for carriers that among other things aims to increase their survival rate. After a short inquiry we have confirmed that they would be willing to adapt a training course for our specialized personnel. In general, carriers are the closest thing to an ordinary person inside a dungeon so we believe this training can bring the effects we are hoping for."
"And what's that going to cost us? I already said that we dont have the funds! Do you want me to start making cuts elsewhere?!! How about I cut the wages of your entire ministry!"
"Please, we are all trying to achieve a common goal here. As chairman I directly sanction the proposal put forward by the ministry of education. As for additional funds… it's time we asked for compensation from those halfbreeds for their failed city. The justice hall has also pledged a large sum from their personal funds once we reach certain milestones. I'm sure those cash injections will help to keep us going."
"Chairman, if you are referring to the butterfly hall then I advise caution. They are clearly planning something nefarious and based on their combat power we can't afford to take them lightly."
