Capítulo 269: Flames

The stakes inside are fast approaching but I'm not too worried. The stakes are crude beyond measure so even If I fall without doing anything, I won't die.

I kick the wall behind myself and launch myself to the other side of the pit. Stakes tend to be more concentrated toward the middle. I get a few scratches from the stakes I pass by and land on the pit floor.

The pit isn't deep and poses not much of a hindrance to an uninjured individual. I jump out of the pit and find Jake staring blankly.

"Not a bad trap but now that it has failed, what will you do?"

"I don't know? What should I do?"

I give him a somewhat malicious grin as I size up the distance between us.

"Sorry Jake, that wasn't really a question for you to answer. This is more of a show me moment. Try to keep up!"

I push off the ground and sail through the air towards him. My stats are mostly quadruple his so this fight is anything but fair. However, I am being quite nice compared to adventurers.

I don't draw my daggers and just punch at him. This way I'm solely relying on my pure stat advantage. And the only way to beat me or at least protect himself, is for Jake to use both his brain and his skills.

Jake doesn't or refuses to comprehend the situation until my fist hits him. As a free bee he is roughly three times bigger than my fist. My knuckles crash into his thorax and sends him tumbling to the ground. His body is fairly light so the damage isn't anything big but that probably hurt.

"What are you doing? You're supposed to teach me!"

I Land back on the ground and look at the exasperated Jake.

"I am teaching you. You just aren't listening!"

I charge at him again. This time he tries to dodge while moving backwards. Evasion against a much faster opponent? Not so easy!

I swat at him with an open palm like one would at a pesky fly. He only gets grazed but is again sent flying with myself in close pursuit.

"How am I not listening! You aren't talking?"

"Figure it out!"

Another swat lands on him. This time it's a perfect hit and he's shot into the ground. Lying at my feet, Jake isn't even trying to get up.

"Please man, I'll try harder! Okay? This shit really hurts and I can't beat you anyway."

I grab his head and begin to squeeze.

"You can't beat me? Why didn't you run? Do I look like I can fly? You did what you always do, nothing! Do you like being a weak bee? Do you enjoy being bullied by every adventurer you come across?"

"No! Ahhhh! Stop, your crushing my head!"

Even if I feel bad about what I'm doing, I continue.

"I'm crushing your head? Isn't that what you wanted? Always saying that you can't become stronger, you want to be crushed!"

"Ahhh, I don't! I just want to be left alone! I never wanted this!"

Looks like we are getting there.

"Then why did you accept their offer? If you wanted to be left alone, why not just stay dead?!!"

At the mention of him staying dead, Jake snaps.

"I'm not better off dead! I want to live! Okay! I want to be stronger! I want people to admire me too! Now let the f*** go of my head!"

The buzz of Jake's wings changes and his entire body begins to heat up. My constitution stat should allow me to tolerate temperatures to an above standard degree without hurting but damn, it's getting painful. The only reason why I'm still holding on is because he hasn't gotten the skill yet.

Jake is screaming incoherently and the heat coming off his body continues to rise. My skin is getting third degree burns by the heat as I keep holding on. Finally, as golden flames appear from Jake's body, my assessment skill notifies me that he successfully obtained the skill.

I hurriedly let go of Jake and pull my hand out of the flames. Not that there is much of a hand left after being exposed to those unhealthy temperatures.

Yup, third degree burns. Charred on the outside, roasted on the inside. I try to ignore the pain as I dodge an incoming flaming charge from Jake. He's screaming incoherently as before and seems to have lost all reason.

<Drop the seems. He's lost it. Still, one death should right most of this so could you do it? I know it's morally questionable to kill a comrade but he won't really die so…>

Yes, yes.

I dodge another charge attack, draw a dagger with my not charred hand, and end his potential suffering with a clean cut. Man, I really deserve a vacation after this shit!

<Then it's a good thing that's exactly what you are getting.>

Right you are. Just need to get through today first. How's Jake now?

<Still trying to figure out what just happened. He was pretty surprised when the guy he'd heard only good things about suddenly turned rogue. But I don't think he holds a grudge.>

He'd better not! I let him burn my arm to a near crisp just so he could get that skill! He only suffered some physical trauma!

<True but hey, people can hold a grudge over less. Much less.>

Well, good thing he doesn't. Can we switch dungeons so I can get a respawn?

<That burn is not treating you well, is it? Sure, random as usual?>

You know it. Since we can be deployed anywhere, we might as well train everywhere. Plus, I can't be bothered to make specifications to a dungeon type when there really is no need to do so.

I settle back against a tree ab wait for the darkness to take me. I wonder where we will go this time…
