Capítulo 166: Are you a fairy?
I share some more experiences I've read in that book with my family before brushing my teeth and going to bed early. I pulled an all-nighter just yesterday so I immediately sink into the land of dreams the moment my head hits the pillows.
My dreams are filled with surgical knives dancing with dismantling knives. Bodies appear and disappear being cut up systematically by the interweaving blades.
I am not quite sure why but I find there to be a sort of hidden beauty hidden in the curves and angles the blades cross and glide through skin, flesh, and tissue.
I wake up abruptly and find myself somewhat weirded out by the strange dream I just had. The fascinating I felt during the dream seems out of reach now like an intangible shadow looming right before me yet infinitely out of reach.
I check my status and discover that my field surgery skill has reached level 2. I'm sure that it was still level 1 yesterday before I went to sleep. Maybe it has something to do with that weird dream.
Whatever it was an increase in my skill level is good news to me!
Melody is sleeping soundly next to me with my arm held tightly in her embrace. Careful as to not wake her up I free my arm and get up. For a moment she stirs restlessly before grabbing a pillow to replace my arm and returning to whatever dreams she is having with a smile on her face.
I check on the girls and find that both of them are still sleeping. Quinn in her creepy unmoved sleeping position that makes her look like the dead people in coffins and Cassidy sprawled over her bed as if she has been tossing and turning all night.
Seeing that everyone is still asleep I set the table and begin to cook up some breakfast. I'm by no means a seasoned cook but I can still prepare some scrambled eggs and bacon.
Like a magic spell being cast the smell of bacon sizzling in a pan spreads through the house and wakes up all the occupants.
Cassidy is the first to arrive in the kitchen wearing her pajamas and rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. Melody follows soon after but seems to have already washed her face helping her wake up.
Quinn only arrives when we are already all seated at the table. She sleeps like that dead and has similar troubles waking up.
"So, what are we doing today?"
Cassidy gains enough energy from her first few bites to start asking questions about the schedule of today.
"I plan to meet a few friends from back when I was a young girl like you two. Why don't the two of you spend the day with your father?"
Melody has plans. That's nice. I was afraid that her social network would suffer since we just moved but apparently, she is doing quite well.
"Can we see daddy's workplace? I really want to go to one of those professional gyms for adventurers!"
"Really Cassidy? I finally get a day off work and the first thing you want to do is drag me back there?"
"It's not like that! You wouldn't be going there to work but to show your two cute daughters around. Don't you want to introduce us to your colleagues? Wait, they wouldn't be working on weekends..."
Navi?
<Bring them by all means. Today's a slow day anyway and we have no planned customers until the evening. Just make sure not to bring them into any of the places where monsters are working.>
"Oh, they are working. If both of you are up for it I'll take you."
"Yay."
Quinn doesn't respond but I'm sure she would protest if she was opposed to going. Right now shoveling food into her mouth seems to be more important to her than talking.
We finish breakfast rather quickly and Melody leaves while I do the dishes together with Cassidy. Quinn continues to sit on her chair while murmuring curses at the sun and whoever invented mornings.
Since I work just down the street we arrive quickly and enter through the automated sliding doors. The reception desk is unmanned with a sign saying to ring the bell for someone to come.
Navi wasn't joking when she said that today was a slow day. Speaking of which, Navi suddenly comes into the reception area through one of the hallways.
"Guy, I thought you had taken the day off. What are you doing here on your day off and who are the two cuties behind you?"
Really?
<I can't just know that you're here can I? This mental connection thing is a company secret.>
"Haha, I thought I'd show my two daughters how my workplace looks like. These are Quinn and Cassidy."
Both my daughters are staring at Navi with their eyes wide. I was expecting that reaction from Cassidy but for the impassive Quinn to be swayed by someone else's looks. I'm worried now about what happens when we meet Valeria.
""You're a fairy!""
With an unnaturally synchronized timing, both girls cry out simultaneously. Navi's face shows no reaction besides a mild smile but a serious voice question me in my head.
<Did you tell them about me?>
What now?
<Did you look at my status and tell them what I am?>
Wait, you're actually a fairy!
<Phew, so you didn't tell them.>
Shouldn't you know? You are always in my head.
<I am not omnipotent and I am in a lot of people's heads. I too have lapses of attention. I too sometimes miss things happening despite them being perfectly within the range of my perception. I'd like to say that I'm only a human too but you of all people should get the problem with that.>
Our little mental crisis meeting goes completely unnoticed by the girls as they are busy looking Navi up and down.
"Would you like for me to give you a tour? Today's a slow day and I'd be happy to act as your guide."
