Capítulo 86: Muddy diversion (3)

Thanks to my universal monster language skill the elf can't hear the contents of my chant. He realizes that I am casting a spell but misjudges it as an offensive spell.

He shifts his legs apart in preparation to dodge my spell and close the distance to finish me off.

The blood perfectly flows below his shoe soles and his sideways movement continues further than he anticipated. He lands in a perfect split with his already bleeding crown jewels hitting the mud.

While his face is contorted by pain and his attention is elsewhere I dart forward and sail at him through the air. The wannabe goblins aren't far behind either. His speed spell allowed him to get past them but now they are surrounding him again.

Together we pounce on the tormented elven scout and end him. Another battle won and I feel new strength run through my body. I'm about to pull up my status and check how much I leveled up but a stinging pain from my tail forces me to direct my attention elsewhere.

An arrow has pierced through my tail and pins me to the ground. I look up into the trees and a quick glance reveals at least 3 elven scouts with their bows drawn. The arrows are released with a whooshing sound and I quickly try to dodge them. With a part of my tail pinned in place, dodging proves quite a challenge but I manage to avoid another direct hit.

The situation is dire so I activate my sanguine boost and sense the increase in all my stats. I won't survive for long if I stay put in one spot so I bite off the shaft of the arrow sticking out from my body and lift my tail.

The arrow is stuck in the ground so I manage to pull my body off the broken shaft and regain my freedom. Before I get pinned to the ground again I head for the closest tree feeling the arrows zip past me.

My heart is pumping like wild and my blood burns like a blazing fire in the night. I embrace the fire and let myself sink into the sanguine haze that tries to consume my mind. My thoughts turn simplistic and the death of those scouts becomes my sole goal in life.

Before I know it I'm up the tree and snaking along the branches to reach the closest elf as indicated on the dungeon map.

I feel the rush in my blood as I jump off a branch and fly straight at the hooded figure's back. A small voice in the back of my mind tells me to hide my killing intent but I refuse to listen.

Suppressing my intent to kill would only weaken my resolve! I'll tear that elf apart and show those guys what happens when I get shot.

I am so close to the elf that I can already feel the satisfying bite I'm about to land. I u hinge my jaw and prepare to sink my teeth deep into my victim. However, my anticipation is cut short as the elf turns around and swings a short sword at me.

The swing lands right inside my maw splitting my upper and lower jaw. Most of the pain is drowned out by my sanguine boost but death still leaves me with an uncomfortable feeling.

The void crashes in with full intensity and the nothingness opens up around me. There is nothing but emptiness in this darned space.

At the very least the effects of the sanguine boost fade and I realize that I don't make the sanest decisions while that skill is active. I should have retracted my killing intent while trying to sneak attack that elf but I didn't.

Feeling that intoxicating surge in strength is evidently messing with my mind.

<Overestimating yourself is a common occurrence when using temporary enhancement skills. Our bodies seem to have difficulty believing that they can lose the progress they just made that quickly.>

So, how are things going outside?

<Both terrific and terrible at the same time. You managed to attract all enemy scouts and most of their combat groups. That is good since the diversion is working but bad since you won't last five minutes under this kind of assault.>

So we did our job too well? What are we supposed to do now?

<Well, you've already attracted the attention of the enemy so you gotta push on. Reinforcements are underway so try to hold their attention until then.>

Reinforcements?

<Originally they were meant to be a second line of defense for the main team but now that you've drawn so much attention Argus decided that it would be far more advantageous to stall the enemy troops where they are right now.>

Our conversation is brought to an abrupt halt when I am back in my body and it's time to return to battle.

I return to the treetops and search for those elven scouts. Below me, I can hear the wannabe goblins scream savagely as they fight the enemy combat groups. From the low and gruff voices I can hear yelling back at the wannabe goblins I presume the opponents are human.

Now for my strategy. I don't know the average level of either the elves or the humans but I presume they are stronger than me. Getting into a normal fight will make me nearly useless.

There is one other thing I could try. I already discovered that I can escape the elves' notice if I don't let my killing intent show. They are best suited for ranged combat or quick strikes so it would be a shame if they were suddenly dropped into the wild melee below...

Yes, I think I'll do just that.

I slither through the treetops thinking of those delicious chicken drumsticks. No thought of biting a person, gods forbid an elf, in the legs. I'm only out for those drumsticks. Ah, there is a nice and juicy one.
