Capítulo 70: Supply convoy destruction (1)

The strike team Argus has been talking about is comprised of a veritable mess of different creatures. According to Argus all these creatures are from greek mythology.

Argus gave me a quick run down of the participants. The charge would be led by a minotaur and two centaurs. The centaurs would also return fire with their bows. Next came three lamias who would first use bows and then climb the wall letting the others up.

Then the combat group would take out the archers and allow the airborne harpies to disrupt the enemy camp after crossing the wall. Using that as a distraction the leftover combatants would storm through the enemy camp and destroy the supply convoy.

I am to be a part of the combat group. But the other members are well...

"Argus, mind explaining why the 'combat group' is comprised of half-naked humans and goblins?"

"Those are Kobaloi and technically they aren't goblins. They look like them, act like them, and essentially are like them but the dungeon menu says they are different. They are sort of a Greek version of goblins and they were there first."

"And the half-naked dudes over there?"

"Those are Spartans. Members of the most elite warrior clan of ancient Greece. Or so Imperator Vespasian says. No one here can contradict him anyway."

"But they are humans! They can't be monsters in a dungeon! That makes no fucking sense!"

"Their species is shown as spartan and not human. But you know that there is no rule against humans being dungeon monsters, right? In fact, they are seen as monsters that intrude on the dungeon's territory with malicious intent."

"Then why would they turn humans into different monsters? Wouldn't recruiting humans directly be more effective?"

"I don't know their reasons but I would do so to ensure loyalty. You can't betray the dungeon because you won't be accepted into human society. In fact, you have only recently been given the ability to properly communicate with them. Before that, only a handful of you could even attempt to make contact."

While we are talking we move up to the group of half-naked men and they turn to face us. They all wear red capes and leather equipment to cover their vitals. Not one gram of fat in sight.

"Argus, what brings you here? Are there any short-term changes to our plan?"

"No changes. I'm here to introduce our new temporary addition. This is Jade who will accompany you by the Imperator's decree. She is expected to hold her own so deal with it."

The Spartans look at me with great curiosity but quickly lose interest. The other members of the strike team were close enough to hear Argus' words so they too glance over at me.

The three lamias seem interested and slither towards me. Their lower bodies are those of snakes while from the torso up they look human. However, they are very young, aren't they? I'd wager their upper bodies are no more than ten years old by human standards.

<You are right about them being young. Adult lamias are quite powerful so they are stationed further in the dungeon. This far out you'll only find kids and adolescents.>

Really? Isn't sending a kid to war a little brutal? Even I was allowed to train until I was twelve before I had to fight real opponents.

<First of all what the hell is wrong with your parents. Second of all, the age you are referring to is just the development stage of their bodies. Some of them might have just been spawned while others could be centuries old and you couldn't tell the difference. Sending monsters to fight the moment they are born is standard practice in dungeons.>

I can't continue my conversation with Navi since the lamia kids are approaching me. The oldest one bends down to look me into the eyes.

"Hello, Jade. It's nice to meet another serpentine in this dungeon."

"You can pronounce s normally?"

"Of course! Our upper bodies are humanoid after all. Why would we draw out the s as if we had a snake's tongue?"

"I don't know? I just thought that since Medusa did it you would too."

The lamias all look uncomfortable at the mention of Medusa.

"Lady Medusa is a special case."

"I see..."

Since Medusa was likely their superior they wouldn't tell me whatever was the cause of this.

<Then let me tell you. When he was younger, Vespasian liked the idea of snake ladies sounding like that. Medusa trained extensively to make it part of her speech pattern but at some point, Vespasian got bored of it and told her to stop. Now she doesn't do it in front of him but with everybody else.>

Is every monster I meet a weirdo or psychopath?

The lamias are standing around me and are stroking my scales. Especially my head receives a lot of attention. Probably due to the fact that all of them have the lower part of a snake but none have the head.

The lamias are interrupted in their touching of my scales by Argus who has suddenly become a three-meter giant.

"Okay people, get into formation and move out. The supply convoy is your target and destroying it takes the highest priority. I thank you all for your service to the dungeon and Imperator Vespasian."

Kind of cheesy that last line.

<Don't forget that all of these monsters are going to die here today. You can respawn but they can't. Death is permanent and the dungeon will simply replace them with a new monster of the same kind.>

Do monsters feel sentimental?

<Occasionally.>

The monsters take up their positions as we leave the camp and march or slither to the wall that we have to scale. I can already see the wall in the distance with a multitude of heat signals atop and behind it.

The minotaur raises the tower shield he is carrying and breaks into a sprint. Only five steps more and the first arrows start to pelt the shield.
