Capítulo 67: First siege (2)

If we don't do anything they will blast the wall and we die but I don't think the slingshots or the javelins can effectively cover the distance.

I can only think of one solution but that will definitely drain our stone reserves. As I am still hesitant a second volley of fireballs is launched and I have to take cover again.

No more time for hesitation. I call the goblins with slingshots to the wall and explain my plan.

"I know this is risky but we have to block those fireballs. When the next barrage is launched all of you have to try to hit them with stones. You don't have to perfectly get them. They should explode from just the lightest touch."

A fact I had learned the painful way while defending the large dungeon with Jade. Those fireballs are way too sensitive and when they explode you don't want to be standing there.

While the goblin leader repeats my instructions to the goblins with slingshots to make sure they have understood I get myself a couple of javelins. Javelins probably have a much lower hit rate so I will be the only one throwing those.

The third volley is launched and from our side twenty stones and one javelin become airborne. Right after letting go of the javelin, I duck behind the wall and hope it hits.

After hearing the fireballs impact and explode I look over the wall to check out how well our strategy worked. From what I can tell at first glance the strategy worked out.

There are only two new burning spots on the wall. In conclusion, our counter-attack managed to take out ten fireballs.

However, the fire on the wall worries me. At first, all I could see were scorch marks but now the wood seems to have caught fire. Do we have water?

<To put out a fire you should use dirt rather than water. That is more effective and prevents possible steam explosions.>

I leave the others to sling stones and go grab a shovel. Then I start to furiously drop dirt over the wall and onto the burning spot. The wall is vertical so I can't really pile dirt on the flame but it still works. The fire is weakened with every shovel of dirt that slides past it until it goes out.

The goblin leader realizes what I'm doing and directs a few goblins to help put out the fires. With that, I can return to throwing javelins at fireballs.

After 20 salvos the mages seem exhausted and give up. The wall is pretty beat up in certain places from the blasts but we managed to put out all the fires.

A few goblins received some minor burns but overall we are still able to fight at max capacity. As the adventurers begin to shuffle forward in small teams the real battle begins.

Stones are launched as soon as they reach the trenches filled with spikes. However, the adventurers clearly came prepared and each team has a shield-bearer upfront to protect them.

Still, despite the shield-bearers, a few stones got through and began to pelt the invaders. The spiked trenches prove rather effective against the heavy shield-bearers. Breaking all the branches sticking out would take too much time but if they try to push through their clothes will be caught. The classes with lighter armor seem even more worried since light leather armor isn't made to withstand such rough treatment.

They decide to waste their energy and clear a path with their weapons. The advantage of them being adventurers is that they need to earn money from this. If I make things hard enough for them they will leave by themselves.

The same thing can't be said for the invaders from the alpha plane. Only one team has come but they have two shield-bearers and one of them has pulled out an electric chainsaw. The branches before them are obliterated at a worrying pace as they move towards the wall.

Can the wall hold up against a chainsaw? I highly doubt it.

"Concentrate your fire on those guys. Get them!"

To efficiently use the chainsaw the shield-bearer has to leave openings in his defense and the hail of stones hits him hard. His armor is made to defend against cuts and scratches and not against blunt force. Monsters that are fast and use blunt force are rare after all.

With this, all teams are slowed down and we can get in some free damage. Once the invaders get closer I start to throw javelins with some of the goblins.

While the slingshot squad is concentrating on the chainsaw team I try to focus on the others. Sadly, I don't manage to land any lethal hits and neither do the goblins.

We keep hurling everything we have at them and eventually run out of ammo. Some of the goblins have the ingenious idea to use the shovels to throw dirt at the approaching enemies.

It slows them down and seems to be a nuisance in general but they are already too close to the wall. Melee is about to begin and the goblins are excited to finally lay their hands in those intruders. They don't have any idea how many of them will die here today. All they can think of is fighting the enemy to the best of their ability.

At least we still have the wall. Except no, the wooden wall before me is cut down by a bunch of sword skills. Those bastards must have been waiting to do this all along!

I draw my daggers and leap at the team before me. The sooner I take them out the faster I can find the next team and keep them from slaughtering goblins.

I take advantage of the shield-bearer's slow movements and slip past him. The three swordsmen aren't prepared to fight since they just launched a series of skills with all their might to cut down the wall.

This lack of attention will cost them.
