If you're going to unscrupulously manipulate me into doing your bidding, the least you can do is be patient with me," she replied, once again considering the personal sacrifice she would have to make. Her anxiety could be attributed to pride; her refusal to profess how his offer profoundly enticed her.

But she was too intimidated by all the possible outcomes. Sure, she did desire recognition. But the little acknowledgment she gained by making only two appearances in small slots in two magazines brought about a few stalkers, one of which endangered her life. She could not fathom the thought of the pleasures and despairs accepting Deus' offer would bring.
