Chapter 31.
01. Reskeme cheered and did a happy dance on the wooden post, he was happy that he was at the end of the rope. Katherine got tired of all his noise and tossed a rock at the boy's chest, causing him to fall off the post and land on his hands and knees in the sand. Katherine said," thank you for coming back down to join us, Reskeme winced and decided he might have deserved that. weapons master Katherine walked over to a locked door, opened it with a key from her pouch and entered the building. Reskeme said," Where can I go to the privy?" Sergent mike pointed to a door on the opposite end of the yard. With a resigned sigh but knowing this was probably his only chance Reskeme groaned and stood before he walked over and opened the door.
02. He was surprised that the smell wasn't terrible, There was of course the smell of sweat and the faint odour of pee but it didn't smell near as bad as the other privy he had ever used. Reskeme did his business and Channeled his mana breaking the layer over his skin, He could feel the mana come apart at the mental touch. Reskeme used as much mana as he could, He felt the burn throughout his body as he tried as thick of a spell as he possibly could. Reskeme smiled at his progress it was starting to look similar to the one Rufus had first shown him.
03. A couple of minutes later and a much-appreciated break, Reskeme had questioned mike about why the privy seemed less smelly only to discover that some buildings had pipes that were built in. Reskeme was sitting on the ground enjoying relaxing when Katherine came back out of the barracks. Reskeme quickly jumped to his feet and tried to look like he wasn't completely exhausted. Katherine held a leather belt with three steel knives, She walked over and while towering over him passed Reskeme the belt. She said," You better work hard to Earn those knives." Reskeme noticed that these knives were without a proper handle and had no guard to protect whoever was using. They clearly were used for only one thing throwing. Reskeme felt one knife, he could tell the balance was well based on his best guess, unlike most other knives they were evenly balanced. Katherine pointed to the post that Reskeme had ungracefully fallen off of earlier and said," That is your target. She walked towards the post stopping 10 steps away and held out her hand taking a knife from her own belt.
04. She said," Hold your knife with the tips of your fingers about halfway up the knife, Reskeme did so. She said," follow my motion" He lifted her hand above her head and brought it down in a throwing motion causing the knife to spin rapidly before with a thunk sticking into the pole. She said," keep the knife straight when you throw or it will lose speed and won't fly accurately. Reskeme only smiled and nodded, trying to take in all her advice. She saw his grip and showed him how to hold it properly after it looked like he might cut himself. Reskeme Drew back his hand and threw the knife, To his embarrassment the knife missed by a large margin. Reskeme pulled the second knife and holding it how he was instructed threw again.
05. Reskeme tried again and again to hit the pole, he didn't care about sticking it he just wanted to hit it first and finally, after his 6th try he finally hit the damned pole. Reskeme could swear the wooden pole was dodging his attempts, Not to mention if he accidentally turned his knife sideways it wouldn't fly straight or would drop in front of the target. Weapons master Katherine only stood by smirking at his failed attempts. Reskeme decided this practice was much more enjoyable than what he had previously been doing. He smiled to himself and threw with even more enthusiasm, This stupid piece of wood wouldn't best him.
06. Reskeme Threw his knife with his right hand and watched as it flew spinning end over end before with a light thunk sticking into the pole. Reskeme jumped with excitement and yelled, "take that you stupid log.!" Sergent mike burst into laughter and said," The knife is only partly in the log." Reskeme said, " That will teach that stupid log." Mike was confused but decided Reskemes weirdness could be ignored. Katherine said," Now that you have stuck your knife once do it with your other hand." Reskeme was confused but collected his knives pulling one out of his arch-nemesis and the other two off the sand. Reskeme focused and began the same drill from the beginning, He realized it was more difficult the second time than the first time. He had to learn the new motion with the other hand which ended up taking longer as he didn't use his left often.
07. Much more annoyed than he had after his first victory, Reskeme abruptly asked "why do I need to lean throwing with my left hand?" Katherine smiled she had clearly been waiting for this question. She walked over and grabbed a length of rope before returning and roughly tying Reskemes right arm to his side. He didn't enjoy the uncomfortable feeling but couldn't argue. Katherine said," Your arm has just been injured badly and an enemy is running at you, She paused what do you do if you cant throw your knives now?" Reskeme said, "All right I get the point, I now understand why I need to practice just as much lefthanded as right." Katherine said, "throw your knives with your left hand until you stick the target five times."
08. Reskeme pulled out a knife and held it as the Master said, He then tried to throw, Only to realize he didn't even know how to throw properly with his left hand. Katherine said," That was terrible, I changed my mind, you need to stick the knife 20 times before you get to try something else." Reskeme smiled that couldn't be too hard, As it turns out learning to throw left-handed was a huge task. Katherine pointed out he was forgetting to step forward and put the weight behind his throw. Reskeme didn't even realize he did that whenever he threw something.
09. Katherine pointed out he needed to draw his arm straight back and with a flicking motion take a step forward throwing his hand in a forward line at the same time. The knife flew forward awkwardly and landed short skipping across the sand. Reskeme cursed and drew the second knife, He leaned back and stepped forward before releasing the knife right as his hand was in line with the target. The knife flew end over end and suck only a little into the post. Katherine said," When the knife turns sideways the flat edge slows it down due to wind resistance." Reskeme wasn't sure what Wind resistance was but decided it meant the knife would slow down if It turned sideways in the air.
10. Reskeme tried the throw again and the knife reached the pole twice as fast, He was surprised that the change was that much. Reskeme collected his knives and returned to his throwing line, Reskeme removed the rope after Katherine had proven why he needed to use his other hand. She said it would help balance himself with his other hand. His next couple of tries were much of the same, he didn't stick the knife but managed to throw it much faster as he was figuring how to properly release the knife. Reskeme kept throwing the knife wrong and would immediately be corrected, on proper holding or proper footwork, he would even get corrected if his feet were facing forwards or sideways wrong through the throw. Reskeme would have never guessed there was so much that was involved with throwing a knife.
11. After he had finally stuck the knife 10 out of the twenty times Reskeme with enthusiasm said, "Yes halfway done" Katherine said, " you still need to stick the knife 20 times with your right hand." Reskeme cursed and started using first his right then his left hand, using both of his hands. He immediately learned that this was difficult as it really affected something that Katherine called his depth perception. She insisted he does this, explaining that it will help him get better accuracy and switch from one to another with great precision. Reskeme decided he liked throwing knives much more than the tight rope and wondered why the weapons master kept using such difficult terms. Reskeme finally stuck the target for the twentieth time after 30 minutes. He had assumed after his lucky first stick it would be easy to get 19 more but realized it was much more difficult than he had thought.
12. Reskeme got cocky after he stuck two in a row, with one at the top of the pole and one near the bottom. He completely ignored the fact that he missed the third and said," Throwing knives are not so hard to learn." Reskeme smiled an overconfident smile. Katherine walked into the back room without saying a word only to return making a racket as she was dragging a wooden practice dummy covered in metal armour. Reskeme was confused, there were only small gaps on the armoured dummy. Katherine dragged the clearly heavy dummy to the pole and placed it in front, she then walked back beside Reskeme. Reskeme was confused when he said, " what is that for?"
13. Katherine said," since you think it is so easy, I'm giving you the honour of practicing on this dummy. Stick the knives 5 more times with each hand on this dummy." Reskeme eyed up the dummy, it was covered in armour and the only places that looked like the knife would stick was the dummy neck and eyes. Reskeme turned and was flabbergasted when he said." There is no way, That's a near-impossible throw." Katherine pulled out a throwing knife with each hand and leaned forward throwing first her left followed by a side step and her right knife. The first stuck in the right eye entering the small gap of the helmet, followed by the left-handed knife hitting the dummy right in the neck it wasn't the dead center of the neck but still an incredible throw.
14. Reskeme opened his mouth and said," That was just a lucky break." Katherine threw three knives one after another, One stuck the left eye of the dummy followed by one pinging just over the center of the chest clanging loudly and one sticking into the hard leather of the crotch area making a cut but bouncing off. Reskeme stared with mouth agape at the smiling woman. she said," what were you saying, young Sir?" Weapons master Katherine asked this with an innocent tone sounding like she hadn't just demonstrated 5 swift ways to kill someone. Reskeme coughed and said," I will get right to practice, He ran over to the practice line before saying with a shaky voice," noo need to go get your knives I can do that." Reskeme was sweating nervously as he tried to ignore the glare from the intimidating master.
15. Reskeme Managed to hit the helmet with his knife and bounced one of his other two knives off the metal place protecting the training dummy before missing the third one. He sighed and realized he had a long way to go before he would be able to hit the dummy accurately let alone stick the knife each time. Reskeme finally hit between the helmet only to be upset when the knife bounced back out as it had hit the handle first. Katherine had gone somewhere and now returned with two spears that were not even as tall as Reskeme. Katherine said," these are javelin, or in lamens terms throwing spears.
16. She said," they are excellent practice to learn how to accurately throw and are great for using if you need to hit someone who is wearing light armour or even plate. Reskeme took one as she offered it and he examined the weapon. He decided it was a well-made spear, the shaft was light and was tipped with a straight point that was more like an arrowhead than a normal spear. Reskeme said," why doesn't it have sharp edges doesn't it need that to go through armour.?" Katherine said," actually if you use a broadhead point like your suggesting then the blade will break against thick armour or glance off. She said," This is what is called a bodkin point and is used by archers as it is great for penetrating armour as it is sturdy and focuses all the force of the projectile on a single point." Reskeme smiled and nodded his head pretending like he knew what she was talking about.
