Capítulo 40: The Forest
As Ellis and Kyu came to the edge of the forest and stopped right at the tree line, they both peered into the thick green forest ahead. The first time Ellis went into the woods he was attacked by something he couldn't even see, but this time would be different.
"Kyu?"
The black fox sitting atop Ellis's head looked down at him and tilted its head to the side.
"Yup, we're going in there."
Kyu hung his head down looking at Ellis with a confident expression on his face.
"Kyu!"
"Alright then, let's go."
Ellis stepped into the forest and all at once the atmosphere changed. It was dark, gloomy, and felt 10 degrees cooler. It felt like all the sounds in the world had come to a stop aside from the eerie wind, blowing the treetops around.
Ellis tightened his grip on the halberd as he adventured into the forest. His eyes constantly darted around the area checking for anything out of the ordinary. Slowly, they made their way deeper into the forest as Ellis constantly surveyed the area but saw nothing. He couldn't hear any movements that were out of the ordinary either.
Ellis didn't want to use his Lightning State until the right moment because he couldn't use it for very long. If he activated it too early there was a chance that he would run out of time so he would have to wait until the monster attacked first.
What seemed like hours went by, but Ellis didn't put his guard down for one second. Kyu, who was stretched out on Ellis's head, started napping after let out a small huff.
"Thanks for the backup."
Ellis whispered to Kyu who ignored him as he continued on.
As Ellis crept forward, he began to hear a faint rushing sound. He stopped to listen which woke Kyu up who also perked up to listen to. Then after a few seconds Kyu seemed to get really excited as he jumped up and down on Ellis's head. Ellis followed the sound and as he got closer, he could tell that what he was hearing was the sound of running water. Soon, Ellis came to a small clearing in the woods. As Ellis stepped out his vision filled with light as the light from the cystals above could finally make their way down to the ground. In front of him was a beautiful little waterfall that fell into a crystal-clear spring.
Kyu hopped off Ellis's head and jumped into the pool head first. After a second or two he came up and shook the water off him, clearly having a good time. Ellis wished he could just let his guard down and go in for a nice bath in the water. But he knew that as soon as he did that, they would get attacked. Ellis watched the tree line as Kyu enjoyed the spring.
Out of the corner of his eye Ellis suddenly saw a flash of black. He twisted his head, but by the time his eyes were where he'd seen the movement, it was gone. Suddenly, before he could even react and activate Lightning State, the monster jumped out from the tree line, swiping its claws at Kyu in the water. In a sudden flash as the monster's claws connected with Kyu, he exploded into a cloud of dark purple and vanished. In the same second, Kyu reappeared, untouched at the top of the small waterfall astonishing Ellis.

Before he could even finish his thought or activate Lightning State, the monster flashed toward him and slammed into his chest, sending him tumbling backward. Ellis quickly jumped up from the ground ignoring the pain in his chest and activated Lightning State just as the monster was flying toward him again. Now that Lightning State was active, Ellis could actually make out what the monster looked like. It was a huge Black Panther with piercing yellow eyes and a midnight black horn stuck straight out of its head like a rhinoceros.

In the remaining split second before the monster hit him, Ellis shifted his body out of the way as the Darkhorn Panther tried to impale him. But the monster was still too fast for Ellis to dodge in less than a second and it's horn skidded across his chest plate, knocking him off balance. Ellis stumbled and then regained his balance before it attacked again but this time, he had just enough time to completely dodge it. Again, the monster attacked, and Ellis dodged it, but couldn't get an attack out fast enough to strike the panther.
Damnit, this is the Horned Rabbits all over again. If Lightning State runs out, then I'm done.
He was going to have to anticipate when the monster was going to attack and blindly swing if he wanted any chance of hitting it. Ellis sensed the panther coming from behind him and he quickly turned slammed his Halberd down, hoping it hit the monster. He watched as the panther quickly changed its course last second to dodge the sudden attack, but Ellis grazed Darkhorn Panther on its hind leg, making a small wound.
Ellis slightly grinned as he saw the injury but he was too slow to dodge the monster as it instantly ran straight into him, ignoring the small cut causing Ellis to lose his footing and slam onto the ground on his back. The monster grabbed Ellis's leg with its enormous teeth and yanked.
"AGH!"
Ellis screamed in pain as he swung his halberd down onto the monster. This time it cut straight into the Darkhorn Panther's shoulder, making a deep wound and blood gushed down its body. They both stared at each other in anger before the Darkhorn Panther began dashing around again. Ellis quickly hobbled onto his feet. He was barely able to put any pressure on his leg without sending searing pain through him.
I need to end this now.
The monster came barreling toward Ellis, running straight for his injured leg. Ellis lifted up his halberd with one hand and began to bring it down. The panther tilted out of the way and opened his mouth, aimed directly for Ellis's neck. Just before the Darkhorn Panther chomped down on his neck, Ellis pulled out his knife and stabbed the monster directly into its chest. The force of the monster sent both of them tumbling onto the ground. On the ground the monster still managed to bite Ellis a few more times as it tried to take Ellis out with it before it bled out and fell limp on top of him.
"Haaah…"
Ellis pushed the monster off of him and laid slumped on the ground. He had been bit a few times but luckily they were just on his arms and shoulder, nowhere too important.
"KYUUU!"
Kyu suddenly appeared on top of Ellis's chest in a puff of purple smoke and chirped in triumph.
"Why are you so happy, you didn't do anything but watch me get my ass handed to me."
Ellis rolled his eyes at Kyu as he winced in pain.
"So, you can teleport, huh? That would be a pretty useful skill if I could do it. Can you teleport others too?"
"Kyu."
The little black fox shook its head as if to say no but then its head perked up and opened its mouth. Suddenly, a light purple aura erupted from its mouth and enveloped Ellis.
