Capítulo 7: Chapter 7
Knuckles didn't respond. Can't get distracted now! Sonic, not thinking much of it, mowed down the rest of the Motobugs, until no Badniks remained as far as the eye could see. They had won! But still, something was bugging Sonic.
"What's wrong?" Knuckles asked. "We won."
Sonic knelt down and picked up a Motobug faceplate. It was partially burnt from the explosion and there were scratches in the paint.
"These are generation 1 Motobugs," said Sonic. "I haven't seen any of these since my first adventure here. Not to mention, Eggman doesn't even have enough resources to make anything like this, since the war started. If he's even alive."
"So? Maybe you missed a few back then. It's no big deal. It happens."
"No, that's impossible," Sonic replied. "The South Island Cleanup Committee would have found them. Besides, as I said, these didn't have any animals in them, which these older models use as batteries." Sonic dropped the faceplate. "Without the animals using their life force to power these Badniks, they're just empty husks. Something's seriously wrong with this place." Sonic turned to Knuckles, who was digging through a heap of Buzz Bomber parts. "Knuckles, what are you doing?"
"My radar is going off. There's a key in here somewhere..." Knuckles said. Something about Knuckles is that whenever there is something nearby he must find, a little beeping sound will go off in his head. The closer he gets to the item he must find, the more intense the beeping sound gets. As he dug through the parts, he grabbed onto something and yanked it out. "Aha!"
To Sonic's surprise, it was a key! It was golden and had a Yin and Yang symbol engraved on it.
"Hey, that's the Yin and Yang!" Tails exclaimed. "That might be able to open the door. Try looking for a slot to insert it into, Knuckles."
"Will do!" Knuckles said. The two ran back up the steps.
"Hmm... I don't see anything," said Knuckles.
"Weird," said Tails. "Hey, Knuckles, can you give me a closer look at those sunglasses you have?"
"Umm... sure, but why?"
Sonic held the Miles Electric up to Knuckles' sunglasses, which rested on his forehead.
"Just as I thought," said Tails."These sunglasses use AVA technology!"
"AVA?" Sonic asked.
"Yeah, AVA," Tails replied. "AVA technology was developed aboard the Space Colony ARK before its... shutdown. With it, you can see through the illusions of space and time, and reveal the truth!"
"Neato!" said Sonic. "Except for the illusions of space and time thing, that's a little concerning." Sonic exclaimed, mumbling the last part.
"Sorry... I may have gotten carried away there," Tails chuckled. "Anyways, Knuckles, try putting the sunglasses on. No door has no way of opening it. There must be a keyhole hiding somewhere."
"Alright, I guess..." Knuckles said. "Technology sure is something, huh?" He put on the sunglasses, which tinted his vision a shade of sky blue. As he looked at the door, a keyhole shone a bright yellow, right on the border of the white and black Yin and Yang. "Hey, here's something!" Knuckles said, and put the key into the keyhole.
"Whoa, that looks really weird from right here..." Sonic said.
Knuckles turned the key but when he went to pull it out, the key moved further into the keyhole by some unknown force. Everything that didn't go in broke off and fell to the porch with the sound of metal against wood. Then, a mechanism must have activated inside. The Yin and Yang symbol spun swiftly as it, as if being pressed, moved into the door. Then, the two pieces of the symbol split apart and the door opened.
Past the door, Knuckles saw cobwebs and dust covering the entire first room. Wallpaper peeled off the wall, and the corners of the walls had a disheartening flavor of green fungi covering them. The wood looked frail and rotten. It smelled like a dirty pond.
"It looks like nobody's been here in ages..." Sonic stated, peeling a rather large cobweb off the wall and flicking it to the ground.
"This doesn't look anything like an Eggman base," Knuckles said, walking inside. "It's natural, organic. And say what you want about Eggman, at least he tries to keep things nice and shiny."
"It might be a trick to deter us from going any further," Tails warned. "We should keep going. It can't just be a coincidence that this house appeared right in the middle of a storm that's sweeping away small animals and anything else it encounters."
"You're right, little buddy," Sonic replied into the Miles Electric. "This mansion may be big, but with my speed, I can be through it in no time!"
"I'm detecting some strange interference in here," Tails said. The video flickered. "I might have to disconnect. It may damage the Miles Electric to be on this call any longer."
"Bye, Tails!" Sonic and Knuckles both exclaimed. Tails gave a thumbs up and a smile, as the call ended Sonic powered off the Miles Electric and put it in his bag.
