Capítulo 39: The Mysterious Place
<Eric POV>
"Boss, we arrived. This is Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge."
"Be ready, we don't know what can happen in this forest."
"Roger that sir, should we take the dirt road? On the map, it shows that the road would take to a camping ground. From there it appears that the lake should just four more km away."
"Sure, skip the addons on the road. Follow the main one."
"Right away sir."
"Be careful and have the copilot watch our surroundings. I don't want to be ambushed by someone or something."
While the refuge was pretty big, we decided to slowly drive towards the camping ground as it will be safer for us than rushing without care towards the unknown. As I said to my men, an ambush could be waiting for us and as neither I nor anyone from my team knows the woods we decided to take the safest method of approaching our objective. Just like the saying says slow and steady wins the race.
(A/N: Quick reminder, I'm not from U.S.A so I have no idea how the refuge looks like and I will mostly improvise so I'm sorry for not putting the right distances or locations. This is a fan-fiction so things aren't like IRL)
From where we enter into the refuge to the actual camping ground, we have to drive ten to twelve kilometers to arrive there. Fortunately for us, there is one big main road which leads directly there.
We didn't have any problems arriving at the camping ground, but when we arrived there we quickly entered a state of alert. Apparently, we weren't the first people to think about going into the forest to protect ourselves.
Around the whole camping ground, we could see tens of tents with stuff in them, but the thing that made us going full alert was the sea of bodies that lied on the dirt.
Slowly getting out of our vehicles, we made a perimeter around our vehicles, I even ordered two men to stay on top of the vehicles to cover us in case something happens.
After ten minutes of complete silence, I decided to take a look at the bodies. I wasn't suicidal or an idiot so I took some pebbles from the ground and throw them at the dead bodies. The first four bodies didn't react, but when my fifth pebble hit its target, the supposed dead body raised from the ground ready to pounce on me. Unfortunately for it, I was ready and as soon as it raised its head, I fired at it putting it down for good.
When the body hit the ground, more and more zombies begin to wake up hungry for some human flesh.
Seeing how the situation becomes worse, I run fast back to the cars while my men gave me covering fire.
When I was close enough to the cars, I turned around and begin firing at the incoming horde. As there were tens of zombies coming towards us, I didn't have to aim, but firing just in a general direction wasn't helpful when dealing with zombies so I had to pick my targets one by one. Fortunately for me, I had a whole squad that would do the same thing and at every shot of mine, fifteen others followed.
The whole fight took us ten minutes while the horde was killed in the first half, we decide to clear the place of any strugglers that remained.
After we cleaned the place of any danger, I propose a break that everyone deserves it. After we eat, I decided to continue our journey towards the fire station.
One hour later we found the lake and right beside the lake was our target. I have to say that I wasn't expecting something so big in this forest. The whole place was surrounded by two layers of metal fences while the said fire station had more than one building in it. The first building was the main one, or at least that's what I presume as it was the biggest building, next to it was the garage and surprisingly enough for us there was a helipad. Well, to be fair in a forest, it will be more practical to use a helicopter to put down a fire than use a truck. The last building was actually a warehouse that probably used to store stuff for the firefighters. All in all, the place was perfect for someone to live in it after a bit of cleaning.
Getting inside the compound was a bit tricky as the gate has an automatic system that needs electricity to function which led to five of us climbing the fences. Inside the compound, we decided to see if we could somehow open the gate manually, and lucky for us, we were able to open the gate letting the rest of our team inside the compound.
Now that the whole team was inside the compound, I decided that it was time for a search. While the place looked unused for some time, I didn't want to risk the lives of my men. I took Jorah with me and walked towards the garage while the rest of my team entered the warehouse or the main building letting just three guys outside to watch our backs.
When I entered the garage, I wasn't surprised to see that the place was empty. At least we will have enough space to keep our vehicles safe from the rain. The garage was pretty big with four garage doors and enough space for six or seven trucks and it even had a corner where you could check the trucks.
Seeing that the garage was clear, I decided to enter the main building only to see one of my men running towards me.
"Sir, we found some information about this place. Apparently, this ain't a normal forest fire station. From the documents we found inside this place was a military outpost camouflaged as a fire station. We also found that there should be a bunker somewhere near us with supplies for an apocalyptic scenario ."
"This is interesting, a military outpost that guards a bunker. We may have some problems. Gather everyone, we have to find that bunker and see what the heck is its role in the grand scheme."
