Capítulo 12: Chapter 12
"Tobias Eaton" Jeanine calls. Tobias gives me a small smile and squeezes my hand. Here we go. I give him a small smile and nod, and he stands up. Everyone's eyes are on him, which I know makes him uncomfortable. He walks down slowly and makes it to the bowls. Jeanine keeps her look on him, but he just continues to look at all the bowls. Eventually, Tobias cuts his hand. I notice too much blood comes out and he must have cut it too deep. I see him put his hand over the Abnegation bowl first. No, no. Then, as soon as the blood is about to drip, he moves his hand over a different bowl and it falls in.
"Dauntless," Jeanine says, straightening up. Dauntless. He chose Dauntless. It's been so long since an Abnegation transferred to Dauntless, that I think most people already forgot about it. Tobias turns around and looks up at me. I smile and give him a nod and clap a little as well, but not to much so Marcus doesn't see. Tobias then looks at Marcus and his face is priceless. I have never seen Marcus more confused or angry, even after I stood up to him. I hold in a smile and then turn back. Tobias walks over to Dauntless, and the clap him on the back and cheer.
I've always admired Dauntless. Something about them just draws you in. Even though I'm Abnegation, I've always wondered how amazing it would be to punch someone you hate straight on the nose. If you do that it's deemed inappropriate and childish, or in Abnegation, drawn by hate. But in Dauntless you do it once, and it's forgotten the next day. Now Tobias will be able to do that. He'll be happy. He'll be brave.
By now the Abnegation section is done and has moved on to Dauntless. I can tell when I glance over at Marcus time to time, he will never get over Tobias's decision and he doesn't even clap when someone transfers over to Abnegation.
The Dauntless names are finally done, and everyone gets up to leave. The Dauntless begin to run out the doors, and I see Tobias in the crowd. I smile and wave at him when Marcus isn't looking and he waves back. They're probably jumping on a train. I hope Tobias lands. Oh my god, what if he doesn't land. Marcus and I begin to walk back home and we don't say anything to each other on the way. Not that I don't want it that way. I pretend to look sad, and act like my brother abandoned me. Eventually, Marcus speaks.
"Did you know?" He asks
"Know what?" I say back, acting confused, again
"Don't act clueless, did you know he was going to leave?" Marcus asks. Though it seems more of a statement than a question.
"No," I lie "I didn't," I say looking back down.
We eventually make it back home and Marcus heads upstairs. Not even bothering to take the anger out on me about, earlier before the ceremony, or about Tobias. He just walks upstairs and closes the door. I walk over to the couch and sit. Now we wait for visiting day.
