Rules are not necessarily sacred, principles are.—Franklin D. Roosevelt
Aerith dropped Krishna's hand when the horror of her idea finally made sense to her.
Although she was a daredevil, she couldn't fathom the thought of disappointing her parents who welcomed her with open arms and showered her with all the love they could give even when she wasn't one of their own.
Nodding her head, she agreed to her conscience that she would do the right thing, so she paced in the living room and fished her phone from her jogging pants pocket. Her index finger hovered above the screen as she contemplated who to call first: Queen Olivia, her adventurous mother, or King Maxen, her father who spoiled her to no end?
She knew her request was something that would raise her parents' eyebrows given that it was almost sunup, and college parties were something that her parents frowned upon because they knew what went around those parties which, obviously, they weren't a fan of.
But her curiosity was pushing her to take a chance and ask for her parents' permission so she could crash the rugby team's victory party. Swallowing the uncertainty down her throat, Aerith straightened her spine. She knew she needed to choose which person would most likely agree to her request.
When she made up her mind, she took a sharp breath and dialed the number she thought would be the easiest person to persuade. "Hey, daddy!" Aerith exclaimed and her energy was through the roof as soon as King Maxen picked up the call. She sent a thumb up to Krishna who was clapping her hand in anticipation.
"Why do I have a feeling you'll be asking something from me, little one?"
"As a matter of fact, I do. And I only accept yes as an answer."
King Maxen's voice boomed through the phone's speaker. For a second, Aerith and Krishna were hopeful that he would grant Aerith's request.
"Well," Aerith gulped, "Can I go out for an hour? Just want to check how the victory party was going and…"
"Weren't you supposed to be there, little one?"
Aerith's heart dropped to her stomach. Her brain's wires suddenly twisted into a knot as she came up with an answer that would make sense. She knew whatever she would say, her daddy would catch on that she and Hunter had broken up.
"Daddy… I… I was home. I fell asleep, so I missed half of the party."
"Hmm…"
Krishna mouthed, "What?" She inched closer to Aerith and planted her ears on the other side of the phone.
"As long as you bring two of your guards, but…"
"Wha-? What but, daddy?" Aerith's heart painfully squeezed in her chest. Sher had a feeling that King Maxen would 'suggest' for Aerith to call her mother too.
"I suggest you give your mom a call too. If she agrees, then you're free to go, okay? Have to end the call now, little one. Love you."
"Love you too, Dad. Thank you." Aerith ended the call with her father.
She huffed. Shouldn't one parent's approval suffice? A big question mark floated above her head as she wondered why she had to ask both of her parents' permission every time she had to go out.
Her fingers then wrapped on the edges of the phone with so much force. She wanted to cry, but she held back her tears. There's a reason King Maxen passed Aerith to Queen Olivia, and Aerith had an inkling what it was.
Her father didn't want to disappoint her that's why he agreed to her request, but it didn't mean he wanted her to attend the party at such an ungodly hour that was why he 'suggested' for Aerith to give her mother a call too.
Aerith knew that even though her mother was adventurous, there was a limit to it since Queen Olivia was once a victim of a college party gone wrong. But Aerith mustered up all her courage.
"There's no harm in trying, right?" she asked Krishna. Their gazes met for a brief second, and Krishna's eyes brimmed with encouragement.
Dialing her mother's number, Aerith nibbled on her bottom lip and waited until her call went through.
"Mommy. Ha-ha!" Aerith nervously greeted Queen Olivia as soon as the call went through.
"Little one, it's so late to be calling me. Did something happen?"
Aerith winced upon hearing the hint of worry laced in Queen Olivia's voice.
"Well, I just want to ask for your permission. I wanted to make a quick trip at Zach's victory party."
Silence.
Ear-ringing silence deafened Aerith as she waited for her mother's verdict. She finally heard a gentle tapping on the wooden table which she could assume was her mother tapping a pen on it as she sat in her office.
Aerith's fingers curled into a fist when she heard a sharp inhale on the other end of the line.
Was that a yes? Or a no? She closed her eyes and silently offered a prayer, storming the heavens to give her a miracle for being such a good girl for asking permission from her parents even when she could just escape the tight security she became accustomed to for years.
"Little one," Queen Olivia trailed off and exhaled as she paused. "If it was up to me, I would let you out and have as much fun as you like… but your security is my top priority. If your dad approves of your request, then…"
"He said yes, Mom. I… I called him first,"
"Of course you did," Queen Olivia teased. She paused for a brief second and Aerith could hear the gears in her mother's head churn. Her gut told her that her mom would allow her as long as she brought two guards with her which she didn't mind bringing along.
"I'm with Krishna too, Mom. See, she's here," Aerith quickly passed the phone to Krishna whose eyes turned big as saucers.
"Hello, Your Majesty." Krishna curtsied as she said her greeting. It earned her a chuckle from Aerith, who gestured a zipper in her mouth when Krishna sent her a seething glare. "Yes, it will be a quick trip. We'll just pop in and say hi to the guys. Yep. Yes. Absolutely, Your Majesty."
Aerith hopped around the room like a bunny, triumphant over her impending freedom as she listened to Krishna agree to everything that Queen Olivia said.
"Thank you, mommy! I'll be a good girl. I promise. Love you too." Aerith bit her bottom lip and zoomed up to her bedroom to change.
She grabbed whatever her hands could reach as soon as it dipped inside her closet. In no time, she skipped her way down the flight of stairs, two steps at a time.
"Who's ready to parteeeeeh? Me!" she cheered herself, looking excited on the outside but a nervous wreck on the inside.
