Capítulo 70: Chapter 65: Bliss
"Woah! Hell week's gonna come ready to kill us!" Nick said but his words did not match with his expressions and gestures because he was happy every exams for having a humble reason to defeat some people. "Hey Joy you should be nervous now! You don't know if you can still stick to your spot on the top of the tier."
"Oh, it's okay. It's okay. Do your best." she smiled and walked hand in hand with Mari who struggled not to let out a nice laugh.
"Have you forgotten that this girl doesn't really review?" she said and walked happily with Joy as Nathan and Nick had their mouths wide open. Fallon on the background twitched at the sound of her voice and the information she just heard- and it irritated her because she had to sacrifice sleep just to have good scores while her rival was slacking off.
"Hey. Aren't we forgetting someone?" Nathan asked. The other three stopped and looked at him with a clueless look on their faces.
"Yes i agree. It seems like we are forgetting someone." Mari said and counted her companions. "We are complete though- Nickolas, Mari, Nathan, Joy. No one's missing."
"And for a moment I thought that someone was lost. We must be very nervous for exams to have thoughts like this." Nathan said and started walking away and they followed him.
"Hey Nathan you bastard walk behind me!" Nick yelled at him as they raced and competed as they walked.
"Say, Mari." Joy said and squeezed her hands. "When everything looks so perfect, I can't help but wonder why and think what will happen next. You know what they say- when a person is happy, next will be misery."
Mari seemed to have processed her words a bit longer than expected and she stopped walking as she watched the other three's backs. She realized that she was getting behind them and she went running to catch up. As soon as she did, she placed her hands on Joy's shoulders as she panted, and they all stopped walking to listen to what she has to say.
"I know...." she said with a frail voice and looked at Joy with such yearning on her face. "I know you were suffering."
Joy flinched as soon as she heard Mari because she was intrigued by the cuts she have on her wrists- without remembering why she cut them. Mari was looking at her with such love because she had been her sister for all her years and she was always there to help her when she suffers.
'I'll help you now. It's my turn now.'
"Joy. These days are great right?" she said. "You- overthinking is just natural because you have been on the dark and seeing instant light will surely hurt your eyes. You have suffered long enough." she embraced Joy and smiled as she felt warm tears that wet her shoulders. "You should just enjoy this happiness so it will linger for you even if you ever become sad again. You know, people like us are too appreciative of simple happiness because we have dwelled on our dark pasts and i totally understand you. I do." she pulled from their embrace and held her hand tight." Let's enjoy the happy moments together while we still can and who cares about the misery we'll face tomorrow? We've been used to it's presence. It can't become darker than it already was."
Nathan and Nick turned their backs from the two and sighed at the same time.
" Do you want to watch sunset at the beach? Or do you want to chill on the lake?" Nick asked, trying to divert himself from the happiness that built up on him as he heard the encouraging words from Mari.
"I want to enjoy the happiness with you as well,. Nathan... Nick." Mari said and averted her gaze from them as she blushed the moment she mentioned his name.
"Oh come on, don't be shy and all. I love what you just said." Nick said and gave her hand a warm touch. "But you know what? For me, I'd love to share not only the good, happy times, but also the sad times. This world's awful and none of us won't be able to take the burden alone. So Joy, and my Mari, even you Nathan you bastard- you can always count on me when things get rough!" he said and gave the other three a warm smile- the kind that makes people want to surrender to- the kind that makes people assured and feel comfortable.
"My surname's not bastard ya know?" Nathan said and walked away from them as they tried to catch up to him. He grew taller and his steps were too huge for the girls and Nick was trying to assist them. However, he stopped as he remembered something. "Where were we going again? Beach or lake?"
"You completely lost your cool there." Joy said and laughed at him. "You are interesting."
Nathan's face turned strawberry red all of a sudden as the three of them went and checked him.
"Oh. This is hilarious. I know why!" Nick said and laughed so hard that the other students walking on the same way looked at them.
"Shut up Nickolas." Nathan said and rearranged his thick eyeglasses.
"All of you only call me with my full name whenever i did something mischievous. Don't worry my friend." Nick said and placed his entire arm on his shoulder. "There is no one who dares to come close to Joy. You can court her now."
"Shut up freak. I challenge you with Hope challenge!" Nathan screamed as they got closer to the bridge.
[M-me?!!!!!?¿]
"Game"! I'm in! But what is that Hope challenge?" Mari asked them as they laughed.
"It's a no review challenge for tomorrow!" Nick said excitedly.
"Game!" Mari said and bumped fists with the other two as Joy was dumbstruck with having her name being the name of the challenge. All of them were laughing so hard and it was evident that they were enjoying the happiness they were endowed with. Before they knew it, they passed the wooden bridge and reached the lake. They sat down the bench and settled there, captivated by the beauty of the lake that reflected the orange sky before them. However, numerous leaves kept coming their ways- and they were everywhere on the water, making it more enchanting.
"Autumn is coming again." Joy said as she caught one dried leaf that fell from the tree that shaded them.
"I've heard that on the news. It's been their announcement ever since and it's coming just now." Nathan said and caught one too.
"Me too! Me too!". Mari said and reached for falling leaves and Nick did the same.
"Let's make a wish and let's make these leaves sail on the lake!" Nick said and wrote on the leaf. Mari tried to peak but Nick pouted at her.
All of them wrote wishes on their leaves and approached the river. They all let go of their leaves at the same time and watched them as they got mixed up with the crowd of leaves that were already floating in the water.
However, a dried leaf suddenly flew to Joy's uniform. She took it and read the words on the leaf.
"Please... I want to be with her."
That was what was written on the leaf. For some reasons, Joy started crying and the others felt strange sadness like they just lost someone. The leaf was obviously old that it started to tear into pieces all by itself as she held it.
None of them was able to speak. The happy atmosphere that surrounded them was gone because of their reactions with the leaf- and even the ever-energetic Nick wasn't able to joke that time.
After the bliss, there's always sadness.
