"Master, Master!"
"Master!"
The familiar voice of Tudor and the newer voice from Willow slowly registered and Libitina opened her eyes.
"Master, are you alright?" Tudor asked in concern.
"How long was I out for?" Libitina sat up from the bed, rubbing her head as she tried to get the sleepiness out of her mind. Her head felt heavy.
"Half an hour," Willow sniffed, "Master, what…did you see?"
Libitina was confused. "Wouldn't you know what I saw?"
"No, the spirits like us cannot access the memories, and we can only pass it onto Master who is their true owner."
"Huh, interesting. I thought we would all experience the same thing since we are all connected as a single soul." Libitina nodded and described what she saw in that short memory. Like her, the spirits were confused as to why this particular memory was so crucial to Persephone that it became one of her core memories.
"Master, are you sure you only saw two kids, a troll and a moth?" Willow huffed.
"Yes!"
"You didn't see us?"
"Yes! That's the weird thing: I don't know who Persephone in the memory was," Libitina frowned hard, "The memory is not from a first-person perspective, so I can be sure that I was not looking from Persephone's eyes.
"In the memory, there was only the little girl Arrie, the little boy Yu, the old troll they called Uncle Tommy, and the big weird moth in a cradle. Why was a moth even in a cradle?"
The more Libitina described the scenes she saw, the more absurd it all sounded when put together. Well, talking to two different part of her souls about her identity was weird too.
"Do you think one of the children could be Persephone?" Tudor asked. "Or, the moth could be Persephone."
"Yeah, we were known to be beautiful so we can't be the troll," Willow nodded, shaking her fur in pride.
"That cannot be," Libitina shook her head as she pointed her index finger up. "Spirits are different from souls. Persephone is a spirit, so that naturally rules out the two children and the troll. However, I don't know if moths or animals hold spiritual or soul essences..."
In the game Moon Princess III, there was a distinct difference between souls and spirits. This was explained by Yurian in one of the game arcs.
In Morobeaun lore, although both are intangible, and many confuse the both with each other, souls and spirits are inherently different in nature like how water and oil are both liquids but have completely different chemical structures. In this case, while souls come from an active living organism, spirits are derived from the natural environment, such as the earth, the sun, vegetation or magma. Mages cultivate their inner soul energy by absorbing spiritual essences, but a spirit and soul are technically different entities.
However, it is not clear if animals or other less 'enlightened' beings have souls or spirits at their core, and Libitina's memory did not contain any information on this.
Demon Spirits like Persephone are born from negative feelings and acts of destruction, just like how the Moon Spirit was birthed from the hopes of Morobeauns. Born from the natural environment, they gain consciousness but will never gain a soul. This was a primary reason why Alistair was able to convince Saint Marianne to eradicate Persephone's consciousness and return her power back to the land, even after Saint Marianne took pity on the humanoid Persephone.
"Furthermore, with blue eyes like hers, Arrie should have been recruited by the Church to become the Moon Saint right after she reached seven, as is the custom in Morobeau," added Libitina. "How could she have become Persephone instead?"
"Well…" Tudor suggested. "Since we are a spirit, we could have been in the grass or the ground or the flowers you saw in the memory."
Libitina pouted thoughtfully. "I guess so. Then, there is a high possibility that either Yu or Arrie are important to Persephone, since they were present since the start of the memory. Otherwise, why would she remember them with such clarity that this memory was stored inside a core soul piece?"
The more she thought, Libitina got more confused. 'All that trouble for this piece of useless information.'
She rubbed her head in frustration as she felt the Eleanor seal on her chest being strained. Startled, Libitina took the saw whet owl and wombat into her arms and hugged them lightly, trying to follow their breathing patterns. The two small creatures laid silently with her on the bed, patiently comforting her with their fluffy bodies.
"Master, chirp chirp."
"Master, don't be worried, we are smart and can work this out."
Laughing, Libitina finally felt her confusion and panic subside. They snuggled back in response.
Even if she did not understand what the memory was, she would understand when she collected more pieces. Now, she should just focus on getting strong enough to protect those she cares for, and to gain enough power to search for the remaining soul pieces.
'Right now, the only thing I can do is to keep gaining wealth, knowledge and power. Only with these, can I protect those I want to protect, and be able to search for the other soul pieces,' she thought.
"Master, are you feeling better?"
Libitina chuckled at the worried fluffballs on her bed, "I'm fine now. Willow, I am very happy to meet you today." Willow made a low hiss of pleasure as Libitina caressed her head.
"Go sleep first, the two of you. I'll join you after I pen an overdue letter."
Watching the owl and wombat play with the pillows, Libitina walked to her desk, dipping her pen into the ink under the moonlight that peeped through the curtains.
