Capítulo 2: White and Wings in a Forest

The morning sunbeams did not reach the depths of the den where the red's cell was. The faint light was not enough to dispel the gloom. Small witchlights lit the back of the corridor leading to the cells' entrances.

The red was already awake when food had been placed in the cell. He was reluctant to move as the pale dragon had chosen to use his foreleg for a pillow and he did not wish to give a rude awakening.

The metallic rasp of opening doors was muffled. It was the day the den was allowed out into the dome. The dry rustle of scales and the click of claws was brief as the others made their way out of the den. Only the red's door remained closed due to the quarantine of the new dragon.

The small burst of noise was enough to wake the pale dragon from sleep. The red slid his foreleg as the head was moved and went to bring the food back to the nest. A glimmer on the transport canvas caught his attention. It was the glow of the witchlights reflecting off a scale. The dirt and dust had been washed away allowing the true color to show through. 'White is a color only heard of in legends. No wonder the Matriarch said this one was special.' the red thought to himself.

The red took the food tray to his nest so the white could eat. The white did not have the strength to move again. The red sat beside the white and moved the pale one into his lap, resting a shoulder upon his chest. He lifted a small bowl of water for the white. "You should drink. It will help you regain your strength," he stated softly. The white took small sips as the red slowly tilted the bowl. Eventually it was empty. The red sat it down to refill and noticed the white had fallen back to sleep.

The red let out a small sigh as he lay the white back in the nest. He sat down and nibbled at the food on the tray. As he sat the half full tray off to the side of the nest he felt something slip around his ankle. The white had curled the end of their tail around him. This action greatly surprised the red. Contact like this usually only happened between siblings, close friends, or mates. The red hoped it meant the white had come to trust him a litttle.

The red had closed his eyes and was thinking to himself when he found himself surrounded by a forest. Startled, he blinked a few times. He could still see the ancient trees but they were misty overtop the stone brick cell. The white must be sharing a memory with him. Closing his eyes again the forest seemed to solidify. The smell of leaves and loam surrounded him. The air whispered beneath his wings as he soared between the trees. A muffled snap caught his attention but he had no time to find the source of the noise. Pain lanced through one wing as it was caught at an unfavorable angle. The other was pinned to his side. Forelegs were pinned to his chest and hind legs were fouled in the netting that wrapped around him. His tail was bent almost to his nose and was greatly uncomfortable. A scream of anger left his maw as he fell toward the ground. The impact sent waves of pain throughout his body and stole his breath. Pain again as a warm trickle of blood flowed over his shoulder from a scale being ripped away. The sensation of hot needles covered his neck as the first collar appeared from the spell. A jab to the bare spot on his shoulder and all went dark.

The red shuddered as the memory from the white faded. He felt the tail still curled around him and the shivers passing down it. The red slid closer to her and draped a wing over the white body. Slowly the shivers stopped. The white sighed softly and curled into the wing keeping at bay the nightmares of the past.

The morning sun had long since faded while the red was sharing the white's memory. Every now and again the sound of wind under wings and through scales filtered into the den.

'I want her to be able to fly with the rest of us. Somehow I need to find a way for her to have something more than water...' The red kept thinking about how to get the white to eat. His main problem was that he did not know the white's diet.

Some dragons only ate meat. Others ate only plant based foods. A few could eat both. There were also rare cases that did not include any of that. Finding out what the white could eat would help the dragon recover faster.
