Chapter 40 — Asteroid.
Jason Star's Daily Log | Day 158.
It has been a few days since the first wave of the Gauna Army. After that event, the official pilots were more active and passionate when it comes to honing their skills and coordination with each others, going through several intense hours worth of real training sessions.
Jason had recently realized that the Virtual Training Rooms weren't capable of linking with each others, making it impossible for the official pilots to really improve upon their teamwork and combat coordination. It was just the best tool to grind their skills independently.
His next step for his grand survival plan was to upgrade the Virtual Training Room into something similar to the virtual simulation game he often played in the past. It should be somewhat easy to make. That way, Jason and the official pilots will eventually have seamless coordination with each others.
Pilot Locking Room | 5:00 PM.
"Ugh... The urinary catheter feels so weird as usual..." Jason muttered uncomfortably, feeling very weird and strange inwardly. He then prayed that the new pilot suits would not use the urinary catheter once again to collect the urine.
This pilot suit was also quite stuffy and uncomfortable, making it hard for him to move around comfortably and easily.
Nevertheless, Jason needed to endure this weird experience for now. The practice session was about to begin soon. He was now participating because there was a need for him to also be proficient with coordinating with the others.
For a lone wolf like Jason, teamwork wasn't really his specialty.
"The training session will not begin shorty. All pilots, please immediately head to your own unit," an announcement rang out from the intercom.
Jason stood up from his seat, and made his way toward Rokurome. On the way there, he encountered with Nagate who had a bruised and bleeding face.
"Hey, what happened to your face?"
"I-I just fell from the stairs recently.*
"Huh? If I remember correctly, there's no stairs near this area," Jason tilted his head confusedly. The wounds looked recent, so it shouldn't happened way before.
Nagate shook his head embarrassedly. "I just talked about something I shouldn't have with someone." He then excused himself.
Jason didn't forced Nagate to answer him truthfully. After all, everyone had their own fair share of secrets to keep.
Slowly shaking his head, Jason went to the Hangar Site in order to board Rokurome.
The training session for today was about mastering the mass drivers and the newly developed melee-combat weapon. Jason had already mastered the mass driver, but the combat formations and such while using it with the others were not included within his arsenals.
The melee-combat weapon was a special spear that resembled the old Kabizashi for familiarity, but with axe blades built at both sides. It can also release a strong and intense electrical discharge made by unstable Higgs Particles to melt the placenta for easier penetration. The spear's large pointed tip was even capable of extending and retracting, similar to the concept of Rokurome's limb tail, in order to act as a grappling hook or mid-ranged attack.
The spear's name was Thunder Spear.
With the Thunder Spear, Jason thought that the Kabizashi would've already been disposed, but Kobayashi said it wasn't the proper time yet.
Without any preparations, simply disposing the Kabizashi outside would just repeat an old strategy. Yes, like the tragedy centuries ago that almost destroyed Sidonia.
...
Command Room | 2:40 Am.
"We've detected an asteroid heading toward Sidonia! The current distance is 10,000 kilometers away; same size and same length as Sidonia itself."
"Moreover, it's approaching Sidonia at high speed acceleration."
The startled assistants informed, while a large image of a blade like asteroid was displayed on the monitor.
"It's so colossally... Why is an asteroid suddenly approaching Sidonia?" Yuhata asked in disbelief.
"We've detected an innumerable amount of Gaunas behind the asteroid, releasing a vast amount of Higgs Particles in space for thrusters."
"So they're forcefully driving the asteroid, intending to destroy the entire Sidonia by using It," Yuhata quickly realized what this situation meant. It was another intelligent strategy made by Ocarina, causing her to feel concerns that maybe the Gauna Race were sentient and intelligent race like humans.
"What're the chances of striking the asteroid with a planetary missiles to alter its travel course?"
"Calculating the chances... About five percent!"
Yuhata thought the chances was low, but as long as there were chances, it was still possible.
She then looked toward Kobayashi, not even needing to mention anything for the commander to understand her intentions.
"You have my permission to launch a single planetary missile. Make sure to strike it accurately after eliminating the Gaunas driving it."
"""Roger!"""
The three of them quickly informed the situation toward the official pilots.
...
"The operation to destroy the asteroid as well as the Gaunas accompanying it, will start now!"
Yuhata ordered sternly through the monitor located at the Hangar Site.
She then continued.
"The possibility of near combat inside the asteroid's gravitational pull sphere is also possible... When that happens, make sure to keep calm and remain very careful."
As soon as she finished her words, the monitor turned black.
"Gravitational Pull...!!?"
"How are we supposed to deal with that kind of thing? We haven't even experienced a situation with strong gravity."
They had spent more time fighting in space with only micro-gravity, not familiar with strong gravity.
As a result, many pilots began to feel serious doubts and nervousness, feeling this current situation was like a nightmare to them. They thought the mortality rate will rise once again, meaning more casualties to appear once again.
Seeing them looking so troubled, Jason thought they were clearly forgetting about an important fact.
"Have you guys forgot that the Toha Heavy Industry already prepared countermeasures against situation like this," Jason's words caused them to widen their eyes.
"Right! How could we forget about such a thing!"
The pilots began to feel more relieved after remembering the functions of Inertia Vector Adaption System and Mass Balance Control System.
Just like what Jason said, they really didn't have to worry too much, making them feel they were foolish.
Hurray, Toha Heavy Industry!
Jason smiled seeing them looking so positive once again.
"However, still remain very careful since those two systems alone will not guarantee your life."
Soon, the mission commenced.
