Capítulo 18: Bribes?
"Husband, what did you discover?" Mrs. Lyn asked his husband while on their way home. "Secret~ it's men's talk so women are not allowed to know~~" Mr. Torres replied playfully.
Mrs. Lyn gave an eye to Mr. Torres and said "Just make sure that you're son understands, I don't want him having a wife so early when he's just starting to plan his dreams. I don't want him to have a hard time doing his dreams and forming a family. You, yourself know how hard it is when you started your company and also have to take care of us, your family."
"Of course I know Hon, you don't have to worry about that, Ben is a responsible child. You can see from his actions that he knows what he's doing. Maybe because it's his first time being attracted to the opposite gender that he has that kind of reaction. Let us let him experience life, get hurt, have hardships and setbacks and to get back up again. He has us as support, so be at ease." Mr. Torres reassured his wife.
Meanwhile, on another house, the girl is having another sleepless night.
Karin tossed and turned on her bed. Having a little bit of sleep earlier at school after cutting her classes, she's having another sleepless night. Remembering Ben when he kissed her hand when they met, put her palm on his cheek when she woke up earlier, her heart is confused. They just met yesterday, and today was just the second day they met and it's not like they were together all day, they just spent one or two hours together, talking nonsense or sometimes about their deal. She can't understand why her heart is beating so hard every time they meet.
She admits she's attracted to him, but at the same time, she's also scared. She doesn't know him that well and most of all she doesn't know if he's only doing those because they have an agreement. 'Sigh Karin, pull yourself together, you don't know his motives so it's better to get to know him first and be friends than get hurt later.'
After determining what she has to do, Karin distracted herself on thinking what to do for her remaining land now that she has budget and also to whom she should give the phones to. She decided to give two of the phones to her best friends Liz and Beth, one for her Uncle Carl and the last one for Ethan, her uncle's son. After planning, at last her long awaited trip to dreamland came.
The next day, Ben woke up not knowing that his father has successfully jinxed him in getting friend-zoned. After her daily morning routine, he called Karin wanting to hear her voice early in the morning. "Hello?" Karin answered in a slightly hoarse voice, obviously she has just woken up from sleep. "Good morning Karin! Sorry, did I wake you again?" Ben answered. "Good morning Ben. And yes, you did wake me up, what's up? Calling so early in the morning?" Karin asked.
"I just want to ask if you like Egg Pies. My friend baked extras so I remembered you and got some for you, if you want." Ben explained, the egg pie was the one baked by Cheska last night for his siblings and since she baked a lot, he decided to set aside some for Karin since he knows she likes those. And sure enough, Karin said "I never say no to free food Mr. Torres, how will I get it?"
"How about I bring it for you at the university? Let's meet before class starts?" Ben offered Karin. Lured by free food that she especially likes, she answered without thinking "Sure, I'll be at school at around 7:30 am!" "Alright, see you at the school, bye." Ben said while raising one of his hands in the air muttering a "Yes!" after hearing Karin said "Goodbye." And hang up.
Ben prepared after talking on the phone, making sure that he's extra handsome and also put the right amount of perfume. He also made sure that the egg pie is boxed neatly. After he arrived at school, he immediately went to his favourite spot near the High School Building to wait for Karin.
"Ben! Did you wait long?" Karin said while catching her breath from running from the gate to Ben's usual spot.
"Nope, I just got here. Oh, here's your pie. Hope you like it." Ben said while handing the egg pie to Karin.
"Wow, I don't think I can finish all of these, are you sure this is just extra egg pies that your friend made?" Karin said after holding one box of egg pie from Ben.
"You can share it with your friends of course, its taste gets even better when sharing food with friends." Ben suggested.
Karin smiled a big smile, happy with the free food and she can even share, she said to Ben, "Thanks Ben! I'll tell you if it taste good or not! Ttyl!" then Karin left Ben without waiting for his reply, excited to eat the food she got.
Ben was speechless, although in the past Karin loves to eat, she still isn't some glutton. Now he understands why Karin is taller and has more meat than in the past. 'Well, it helped her get more curves on all the right places' Ben thought while looking at Karin as she hops to her classroom.
Ben went to his classroom and then Class Rep Dave informed him that Dean Evans is looking for him. Ben then moved to the Dean's office. He knocked on the door and went inside as he heard "Come in." "Good Morning Dean, they said you were looking for me?" Ben inquired.
"Ah yes, Mr. Torres, actually I just want to ask if you have more of the phones that you've given me yesterday? You see we all tried it at the meeting and some of your teachers wanted to have one too." Mr. Evans explained.
"How many more do you need Sir, I don't have a lot of it as the supply is still limited at the moment." Ben asked. "Not a lot, just six more phones and I think your request will go even smoother. Just consider it like bribing your professors." Dean Evans joked and laughed at his statement.
"Phew, if it can make them decide to agree to my request then I'm lucky, I still have six at home Sir, but Dean, it is also my last stock, the phones are still being produced at this moment so what we are giving away as promotion are limited. I hope you understand Sir." Ben explained to Dean Evans, it will be problematic if all the professors would want one.
"Of course, of course, your professors are just asking if it's still possible, I'm sure they will still agree to your request even if the phones are already distributed." The dean said understanding and also explaining their side.
"Ok Sir, I will bring them tomorrow morning here before the class starts. Thank you Dean Evans for helping me with this request." Ben said sincerely grateful to the Dean's efforts.
"Haha, no problem, if you can really do it, then it will give our school a good reputation, and even if not, there's nothing to lose. Alright, go back to your classroom, I'll see you tomorrow." Dean Evans said.
