Capítulo 12: A Man’s Best Friend

"Sir, we've found a few...uuh people being tested on on the main buildings cellars." A man said.

"Here? There are people being tested on?" Alfie asked looking at one of his men.

"Yes sir."

"Lead me to them." Alfie said.

"And don't eat everything in here, leave some for the ones who are more hungry." Alfie turned around and said.

It has been a few hours since their battle and they were in the food storage building eating.

At first the men wondered why Alfie would hold up on blowing the Nazi's food building but now they understood, and so after the battle they have been eating their fill.

The food around camp is not exactly sought after, it could fill ones stomach but it's still not as good, unless a good chef like Alfie would make it.

But now they have a building full of food and they were hungry, a few took it upon themselves to even set up in the kitchens making themselves at home.

Truly a crazy bunch.

Son Alfie and a few men went into one of the blown up buildings, which was recovered by the men as well, and head to the low cellar levels.

What Alfie saw first were the cages, then the tables with blood and unidentifiable tools used for torture or such.

Inside the cages were skinny and dried up looking men and women, eyes dark and lips all dried as well.

There was a stench Alfie didn't like down there, some of Alfie's men already took it upon themselves to free the prisoners without Alfie's orders.

He didn't mind.

Alfie told the men to patch up the prisoners the best they can, he looked around but didn't find much.

He did feel that the tests on these men and women were to see how different types of poisonous gas work and how effective.

The Nazi were planning to use other kinds of weapons to quicken things.

There were a pile of bodies stacked in one of the corner of the rooms, and the prisoners seemed almost afraid of them trying to help.

The prisoners were patched up before being helped to get some food, Alfie told them to make sure they eat slow or else it will hurt or worse.

Before they blew up most of the buildings Alfie grabbed a few important information and stashed it in a bag.

But now that most of the things in the fort is in rubbles there are barely anything useful anymore, barely.

Alfie made sure to look into it.

He got some of the men to gather up all functional weapons in the fort and in the blown up weapons building as well.

Surprisingly there were still many weapons working, though many of the ammunitions have been damaged.

The losses they had was 28 men, that was good considering there were 129 of them in all against an entire base force.

They made sure to take care of the bodies and carefully put it aside.

The men dipped their head in respect for the fallen but didn't think much of it, they all expected themselves to die today, die fighting but they were lucky.

Now most of the men were doing their own things after Alfie called in to the main base to inform them that the fort was captured.

There were a few gunshots outside the fort as some of the men were doing shooting competitions.

Alfie thought it would be fun and went to join, Jonjon was with the group and was leading the group with conversations about accuracy.

The few men were combat specialists and knife users and aren't all that great with aiming.

That was until a gunshot was heard a little bit of a distance away.

Alfie and the others ran to where the sound came, what they ran into was three of his men facing James.

And behind the growling James was a mother wolf lying with a gunshot wound on her front chest, to the side whimpering was a baby cub begging for his mother to get up.

Alfie stood there as three of his men mocked James about being a man of nature, Logan didn't move but Alfie saw that James was looking at the three men as if wondering if he should kill them.

Alfie dismissed everyone but James still stayed, by the time everyone walked off James crouched next to the mother wolf as he looked at the wound.

He was thinking of ending the wolfs suffering when Alfie plopped himself with him and looked at the wolf.

The mother wolf cried in anger as Alfie plunged his fingers inside the wound to take out the bullet.

"What are you doing?!" James growled out as he glared at Alfie and put his hands on Alfie's hand.

The wolf cub was barking at Alfie and biting his legs in a riot due to hurting his mother.

But Alfie didn't say anything to the two as he stirred his fingers inside the wounds of the crying wolf.

"Stop that!!" James yelled.

But it was over soon as Alfie pulled out his hand and the bullet was successfully taken out as he flicked it aside.

James looked at Alfie wondering what was the point of taking the bullet out, the wolf was gonna die anyways.

Alfie picked up the still biting and scratching cub and gave it to James telling him to hold it.

James did as his captain said, but curious, he asked what he was gonna do next.

He saw Alfie put his palm on the wound and held it there for about more than a minute, after taking his palm off there was no wound, there were blood stains but no bullet wound.

James was extremely shocked, he thought if he was hallucinating or going crazy, but realized he has also seen his share of weird.

"How did you do that?"

"It's a secret so won't tell you, unless you wanna tell me a secret of yours then I'll tell you mines."

James didn't say anything but frowned at his captain.

He has seen the way Alfie moved in the battlefield and he knew then and there that he wasn't normal, it was too unrealistic.

Even the men in the troop knew it but they didn't really have much time to care.

"What are you talking about?" James played dumb.

They stopped their talking as they looked to the side.

The mother wolf was growling, fangs out and the predatorial glare was aimed at both Alfie and James.

James still held the baby cub and Alfie was sticking his fingers in her not too long ago, no wold would be happy about it.

James let go of the cub as it ran to the legs of the mother, the mother, still glared at Alfie and started growling.

James stood there not knowing what to do, he left it for Alfie to handle.

Alfie made himself comfortable on a log as he stared at the wolf with a calm but emotionless glare of his own.

The wolf started barking at Alfie and his front legs bend low ready to pounce when she suddenly started whimpering.

James didn't see or know what happened, but the sudden change from a hostile state to being downcast.

Now the mother wolf had her head down and avoiding Alfie's eyes.

A smile crept up on Alfie's lips as he spoke.

"Comer here."

There was no demand or fear put in that command, it was as if Alfie called for his beat friend dog.

James saw as the mother wolf slowly but surely moved to Alfie then rubbing her head on him and licking him.

Alfie smiled as he pet and massaged the wolf getting to know each other.

"How did you do that?"

"I don't know, maybe I'm just friendly with everyone." Alfie said.

"What's a wolf and her cub doing all the way out here? I didn't think there would be any around here."

"It's not impossible to find some roaming around here, there is a war going on and the animals around might be scattered avoiding the bad parts in France." James said.

He suddenly looked down as the cub was back rubbing his head on his legs.

"Hmm, you would know. The little one seems to like you." Alfie said said.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"I don't know, but we'll see." Alfie said.

•••••••

It's been a week now and all the small group of hundred has been doing is eating and making themselves comfortable.

They are now waiting for the main forces to catch up along with the lead general.

And while waiting they recovered the building showers, the men were happy about it and all took showers.

The food was still there and still many left that would last months for the big hundred.

The recent group that was imprisoned and being used as test subjects were back to their healthy self.

Alfie made a new friend, Luna.

Which was the mother would that has been following him around recently, it seemed to have taken a liking to him.

The wolf cub also follows his mother around but would run to James whenever his around as he was his favorite.

The men kept their distance as Luna would growl at anyone getting close to them, and for that one week, Luna has slept, showered, ate, and played with Alfie along with the young cub.

The young one Alfie named Axel.

He wanted James to name it but he wasn't budging, James did spent some time with the young cub though.

By the time the main forces reached Fort Rennes they were a bit unready for the scene.

Alfie and his crew were barbecuing, in the middle of a war, and on the edge of enemy lines.

And not only that Alfie was barbecuing with only some towel on his lower body.

It looked as if he just got off a shower, and started barbecuing the food in the rations building.

The crew seemed to have enjoyed his food as well, James was sleeping on the side with Axel on top of him.

Luna was resting by Alfie's feet.

A few others took the time to play some card games and board games.

All this outside.

When they saw the newly arrived main forces all they did was glance before returning to what they were doing, Alfie was different of course he showed respect and dipped his head before returning to his food.

The forces settled down and took extra caution to watch the surroundings incase of enemies roaming, unlike Alfie and his men who seemed to carefree.

General Eisenhower met again with the barbecuing Alfie as he congratulated and thanked him for the short victory.

But also lectured him on being cautious considering how careless they were just moments ago.

They went back and forth with reports and other topics until Alfie asked to advance again.

General Eisenhower told him to wait and spoke of how rushing things won't be good, and to wait for the other commanders to strategize their next targets.

Alfie complained about them being too slow but he complied either way, he was able to get his fun out.

During their conversation Eisenhower kept side glancing the wolf by Alfie's side, Alfie was respectful enough to tell Luna to be calm around Eisenhower.

But it didn't help the generals nervousness with the continuous glare by the wolf.

They spoke until night when a few people ran up to the area they sat and spoke in.

Two women with one man.

A brunette woman seemed to be in the lead with her two assistant-like workers.

The soldiers who guarded the area wasn't able to stop them as they just ran in to the two talking men.

Alfie and Eisenhower was still outside.

Soldiers set up Eisenhower's office in one of the still functional rooms in the fort, but Alfie was liking the fresh air so he stayed outside as Eisenhower came to him instead.

They sat on a table, Alfie and Luna one one side while Eisenhower on the other side, and on the table was full with food and drinks.

Safe to say both men were a bit buzzed.

"Sir, they suddenly-"

"It's fine it's fine, let them be." Eisenhower said to the foot soldier who panted while running up to them.

"Alfred, this is-" Eisenhower was about to introduce the three but the woman interrupted.

"Margaret, Margaret Bourke, but you can call me Marge." The woman said.

Alfie was just lookin at the three hazily, wondering what was going on.

"Marge here is a Journalists, she works for the s-" Again was the general interrupted.

"Starts and Stripes sir, I hope you have time, I wish to talk about your great feats in the recurrence of the war." Marge said with crazed eyes looking at Alfie.

"Ah what the hell, I'm out of here you don't need me." Probably tired of being interrupted, the general got up and left leaving Alfie and the three journalists.

"Captain McBride, it is an honor to meet you, I've heard much of your great battles." Marge said as she took it upon herself to sit on the other side of the table ignoring the growling wolf.

"Have you? I don't think anyone knows much of my time in the field." Alfie said in thought.

"Your records spoke of your achievements in the basic training camps and how skilled your were, then you requested to be sent to the frontlines, no doubt that others thought of you crazy." She took out a small book and pen.

"And you followed a story of a crazy man and ended up here?"

"Rumors Captain McBride, rumors."

"I have heard little talks of you by chance, I came here instead to speak of General Eisenhower's life story when many soldiers spoke of you on the side."

"And so I dug a little deeper, I spoke to the many soldiers at Normandy of who this newly promoted Captain was, and I am so glad that I did because what I have heard of you...WILL MAKE HISTORY!!" Marge said with heavy breathing.

Marge went a bit crazed as she saw the opportunity for the story, a man who made the fight in Normandy easier and was recently promoted to an officer before gathering his own men and advanced to one of the conquered forts of France liberating it.

Only around a hundred men and they succeeded, and most importantly, the man carries a sword to gun battles.

When she recently came here with her two interning journalists behind her she immediately looked for the Captain.

But she was stuck as she was more excited about the Captains men talking about him in battle.

"Oh right, I think the old man said something about stars and stripe journalists looking for me."

"So you're finally here, and you want to know my story?" Alfie said smiling as he drank.

"Yes! Please let me write down your story, every bit of it, this piece will be big."

"Hmm, you think this could be as big as the Captain America?" Alfie asked.

"Capt- that guy is fake, of course I'm not gonna lie I was a fan of his some time ago, but being on this side of the war and hearing the soldiers opinions showed how disrespectful he is to play soldier when the real warriors are fighting for their country everyday, yet he plays soldier in the states." Marge frowned saying.

Alfie felt like correcting her about who Steve really is, about how he was would rather be in the field then do what he does now, but there will always be people who won't understand so he just let it be.

"I think one of his tours will be somewhere in Europe, he'll be here to encourage the soldiers but I doubt that will work, he will only receive jeers from them."

"You mean he is coming to here soon? When?" Alfie asked.

"Well not here, maybe over at-"

"When?"

"I don't know? Not long ago he was doing another show in the states so it'll be a while until he comes here." Marge said.

"So that means... oh Bucky." Alfie said.

Alfie looked no where particularly as he thought of how someone was doing.

"So will you tell me your story?"

"Only if you can share it quickly, I want to be as famous as Captain America soon."

"Haha that I can do, I don't know What's with you and Captain fake, but like how he won the citizens hearts you will win the soldiers hearts." Marge said.
