"Are you sure it's even in here?!"
Tara's voice sounded muffled, and Rylee pulled her head out of a box to glare at her. She shoved a stuffed animal back in it's home and pushed her hair from her face. "If you're going to just harass me, I don't need your help," she retorted.
Tara scoffed and pulled another box closer. "I'm not going to leave you in here to get buried alive. What if this mountain falls over, and you succumb to a cardboard avalanche?! Someone has to dial 911!" She insisted. Together they moved a crate of notebooks aside and reached for the next stack.
"It's not that serious. Quit being dramatic." Rylee opened a plastic tote and cheered in victory. "Found it!" She proudly held the battery pack up for Tara to see. Her roommate rolled her eyes.
"Thank goodness. This weekend, we are sorting some of this mess, though. You, my friend, might be a pack rat."
Rylee stuck out her tongue and retreated from the room before Tara could start ranting. Collecting her backpack and baseball cap, she scurried for the door with a grin. "I look forward to the lecture! Bye!"
"Hey! I spend all that time to help, and you're just going to—"
THUD! The door shut behind her and Rylee jumped in the car. She knew she was going to get an earful tonight, but she was already late to meet Zane. If Rylee hated anything, it was being late, even if it was just to meet someone to play a cell phone game. If she said she would be there, she meant it, and did her best to follow through.
Pulling alongside the beat up blue truck, Rylee waved apologetically to her coworker. "Sorry, has a harder time finding my battery than I thought! What's on the scanner?" She asked.
"Took you long enough! There's a T4 by the fountain we can try for. It's starts in ten minutes, if your willing to jog."
Rylee didn't complain as they started hustling toward the middle of the park. She hooked her cell phone to the charger, tucking the battery pack inside of her bag. She was glad she brought a hat, at least it kept the sun out her face while they walked. But that didn't keep the back of her neck from growing warm from the intense sunshine. "You sure we can manage a T4? I didn't have a chance to check the chat for other players," she frowned.
Zane shrugged.
"I'm sure someone else will be there. If not, I may have backup, but he's only level 23..." Zane was texting on his phone, assumably checking for other players. Rylee grimaced at his comment.
"23? I'm not sure that's very reassuring for backup..." she joked. Zane rolled his eyes at her.
"You were once a noob too. I'm surprised I'm not another 5 levels above you with all your work lately!" He accused.
"And how are we going to buy passes without work hmm?" Rylee teased. Zane didn't comment, so she smirked, mentally claiming a victory.
They started up the hill, losing breathe as they went. As the fountain came into view, Rylee was relieved to see other players gathering at the base. She recognized a few faces from their chat group, and waved in greeting before taking a seat. As she put her player in the lobby, a notification invaded her screen.
It was her work chat.
Sammie: 'Ry! I just had a family emergency come up! Any chance you can take my closing shift?! I'm desperate!'
Rylee groaned. Zane looked back at her, his mouth curling into a frown.
"No, no no. Rylee, you promised! We haven't even done one raid yet!" He whined.
"What am I supposed to say, 'sorry, I am hanging out with my friend, good luck next time?'" Rylee groaned. Zane grumbled under his breathe.
"You're too nice. I mean, that's what I would say..." he shrugged. Rylee hit him on the arm.
"You would not! Her shift isn't until 7, we can finish our raid before I have to get ready. You know the cutting counter is doomed without me!" She negotiated. Zane continued to pout.
"Fine. But next time, I don't care who died, you aren't covering anyone's shift!" He insisted. Rylee secretly hoped no one HAD died, or he might actually regret saying that tomorrow. As the battle started, Rylee focused on her screen, pausing only long enough to confirm she would cover for Sammie. Feeling warm, she pulled off her hat and sat it next to her, chewing her lip in concentration.
After a few minutes do furious tapping, the raid boss went down.
"Easy win!" Zane grinned, momentarily forgetting his bad attitude. "And it's almost perfect!" Rylee took that as a sign he was in a good enough mood for her to bail. With a quick goodbye, she started to jog back for her car, already fishing the keys from her pocket. Zane followed behind, comparing stats with the other players and looking for the next boss. He didn't even notice the text message that popped up, lost in the background.
'Hey, I'm at the fountain, where are you???'

Evan felt stood up. After his rushing to finish work, Zane was nowhere to be found. True, he missed the hatch of boss, but he had at least expected his best friend to wait before leaving the area. Evan tried not to feel too miffed, knowing Zane probably got distracted by the catch screen. Rather than chase the group down, Evan sat on an open bench and tried to catch his breathe. The jog up the hill had not been easy on his lungs.
"Seriously? He drags me out here and ditches me!" Evan complained, typing another text in irritation. As he moved, he felt something brush against his thigh and he looked down.
Sitting by his side was a hat, with many buttons decorating its top. He spotted the Z of Legend logo, Pocket Monsters, and a Star Portal emblem, to name a few. Looking around, he didn't see an owner, and deepened his frown. That many badges held a lot of memories, and he would hate for it to just get left here. Since the raid group just left, Evan figured it must have belonged to one of them. If nothing else, they had the largest community to track down the owner.
Picking up the phone, he sent a final text. 'Hey, loser. Someone left a hat. I'll put it in my car, maybe your raid group can figure out whose it was,' he sent. Then with a roll of his eyes, he scooped the hat up and left, wondering why he came in the first place.
