Capítulo 54: The Request (15): Road To Love

Jinhyun was woken by the sound of a steaming kettle. He opened his eyes to see a peach painted ceiling above him. For a minute, he was confused before he realized that he was not at his own house. Immediately, he snapped up straight, trying to remember what happened last night.

All he could recall was that he reached the door to his apartment but his memories were blank from then. Did something happen? Was he kidnapped?

But the place looked familiar due to the Joseon era artefacts surrounding him. He was at Cherry's house!

"You're awake," a cool voice came from behind him.

Cherry was standing there, wearing an old red shawl with a shabby gown underneath. No doubt she was in her daytime avatar as an old woman even though Jinhyun could see her real persona very clearly.

"How did I get here?" he asked. "I only remember I fainted in front of my house but-"

"I saw you and left you there," Cherry stated bluntly. "But the guard found you and dumped you on me so I had to take you in."

Jinhyun was not surprised that she wanted to leave him there. After all, he must have hurt her badly the last time they had met. But Cherry showed no signs of being hurt. Instead, she pressed a flask into his hands.

"Take that and leave," she ordered him. "Your fever is gone, so you don't have to prolong your stay here."

"I haven't recovered yet," Jinhyun claimed, feigning to be weak. He let out a fake cough to gain some sympathy. "See? My throat is sore too. Are you going to kick out a sick person?"

He looked up at her with doey eyes. He was famous among the fans for his cute expressions and he put up his puppy dog look to melt her. It always worked with girls.

Unfortunately for him, Cherry did not care.

"Get out!" she yelled. "I don't want you here!"

Jinhyun groaned. There was no way to win her over! She despised everything he did and refused to even be in the same room as him.

"Look," he said, dropping his cuteness. "I'm really sorry. I should not have said those things to you. I apologize if you were offended."

Cherry raised her eyebrow.

"Nothing you said will ever affect me," she said. "You're nothing to me. Hence, I don't think anything you'll do or say will ever affect me enough to offend me. I went there to tell you the truth about your friend. If you don't believe my words, then it's your problem. I don't care about what you said."

Jinhyun stood up and walked towards her. She did not flinch nor back away as he stood closely in front of her. He was only a few inches taller than her and they were almost eye to eye. A strange current was running through them, almost wrenching Jinhyun's heart. There was a stray lock of her hair, swaying in the air. For a second, he had the wild urge to place it behind her ear but he restrained himself.

Cherry's eyes were unreadable but she boldly stood her ground. The man in front of her was desperate to prove something to her. She sensed his hesitation but it did not matter to her what he wanted to say. He had already said enough at the hospital.

"Let's work together," he suggested. "To find the truth."

"I already told you the truth," Cherry said warily. "That your friend is pulling a ponzi scheme-"

"But you lack proof," Jinhyun pointed out. "And so do I. Maybe, it's best if we work together to find the real culprit."

"What if Jenna is the real culprit?" Cherry asked.

"And then what if she's not?" Jinhyun countered. His replies were only irritating Cherry. She was about to snap back when Jinhyun calmly said, "Let's focus on finding the truth. She may or may not be the criminal. We don't know who's right and who's wrong! But if we work together, we can find the truth and punish the right person. Don't you think so?"

He waited for her answer. Cherry frowned, thinking about his words. He was not completely wrong. Maybe by working with him, she would be able to get more data on that Jenna. After all, the memories she managed to retrieve from Jenna and Nara were not reliable.

"Fine," she agreed. "But what will be our first step?"

"Well…" Jinhyun hesitated. Should he tell her?

"Jenna offered me a business deal," he said slowly. "To invest in Zen Riser."

"Zen Riser?" Cherry echoed. She knew this firm very well. It was a top streaming site and very popular among the youth. Her company was once hired to style their models for an event and she was well acquainted with the owner, Park Kwansik.

"But it's a well known company," she said. "Why will she tell you to invest in it?"

"She said it was a good business deal," Jinhyun shrugged. "And can legally distribute our episodes online. It's owned by her ex-groupmate Hyebin's husband."

"Let's look into it," Cherry agreed. "We'll meet with him tonight for dinner. Until then, try to work out a deal which does not require a lot of money."

"Don't worry about that," Jinhyun assured her. "I know exactly what to do."

There was a smug confidence in him. His eyes were sparkling with mischief as an idea played inside his head.

"What are you thinking?" Cherry asked, narrowing her eyes in suspicion. He was being very cryptic.

"I'll tell you someday," he winked as his lips flashed her a wide smile.

Seeing his smile up close caught her off guard. He was looking...kind of cool. Her icy demeanor slipped for a second as she quickly recovered herself.

But that fraction of a second slip was enough to cause his goofy smile to widen even more.

"You were blushing at my smile!" he claimed, pointing at her face in excitement.

"No I didn't!" she lied.

"You totally blushed!" he laughed. "Admit it. You're falling for me."

He kept on smiling, expecting her to blush harder. Instead, within seconds, he found himself being hurled out of the door. He nearly lost his balance as she violently pushed him out of her house and slammed the door on his face.

"My shoes are still inside!" he shouted, banging the door. It opened for a second and a pair of converse came flying at him. He dodged quickly, missing them by inches.

Jinhyun sighed as he picked up his shoes and headed towards his own apartment.

"Road to love is tough," he lamented. Then he remembered her slightly blushing face. It was brief, but she looked so cute that his heart felt warm.

"But it's kinda fun," he said happily.
