Capítulo 45: The Request (6): The Fire

The fumes spread throughout the floor. Jinhyun's eyes were stinging as he coughed violently. "Jenna!" he yelled.

He could see the flames dancing up ahead. The fire was rapidly advancing. The rest of the building had already been evacuated but Jenna was nowhere to be seen.

Cherry was following him. "Jinhyun, you've got to get out of here!" she shouted over the flames.

The fire would not kill her but she, too, can be severely injured. Moreover, despite her dislike for Jinhyun, she could not leave him there. If he died, she would not be able to finish her given assignment and break her curse. But the stubborn guy was not listening.

"I've got to find her!" he exclaimed. "You get out of here!"

He kept on marching towards the hot flames, coughing like crazy. His breath was shortening as the smoke entered his lungs. The toxic fumes were more dangerous than the fire but Jinhyun did not care.

The door of the greenroom was in front of them. He kicked it open. They entered the room only to find Jenna unconscious on the floor.

"Jenna!" he yelled, kneeling to his knees. Cherry quickly took off her coat and covered her with it. She was still alive but would soon run out of oxygen.

"Let's get her out!" Cherry yelled. She helped Jinhyun to hoist Jenna on his back and they managed to carry her out of the room. But the flames have spread further. Their exit was almost blocked as fiery objects fell all around them.

Cherry led the way, looking back every now and then to ensure Jinhyun and Jenna were safe. She could sense Jinhyun was becoming fatigued. Even though he put up a strong front, she knew he was suffering from fever the moment she did his makeup. And the poisonous fog was going to deteriorate his health even more.

"Hang in there!" she ordered him. "The exit is nearby!"

Jinhyun nodded weakly. His vision was getting blurry but he snapped himself out of it. He must save Jenna. Shaking off his tiredness, he struggled to carry Jenna. Cherry held his arm.

He was surprised by her gesture. For once, she was determined to help him. Her face was sweaty due to the heat but she was determined to save them. She dragged him along with difficulty. He was about to lose consciousness but forced his mind to stay awake.

Cherry looked around desperately. Finally, she saw the rectangular outline of a door. It had the exit sign on it.

"There!" she shouted. She helped Jinhyun to walk. Jenna was dangling dangerously from his back but he kept a tight hold on her.

"Just a little more," Cherry said. She was trying to encourage him. It was important for him to live. She half pulled, half dragged him towards the door. Even though he was holding on to his consciousness with every fiber of his willpower, his wretched body was giving up on him.

He almost fell but Cherry held him. "Just a few more steps!" she barked. "Come on!"

Jinhyun heaved his chest and nodded. Every step was a torture but he kept moving forward. The door was almost near…

Within seconds, fresh air smothered him. He staggered forward with Jenna on his back while Cherry held on to his arm.

Everyone was standing outside, looking worried. As soon as they emerged from the burning building, their staff surrounded them. Sekjong ran forward, helping Jinhyun to unload Jenna off his back.

"Jinhyun, are you alright?" the older man asked in concern.

"Get her help!" Jinhyun ordered. His face was darkened by the sooth and his clothes were slightly singed by flames. Cherry was still holding him steady.

"He needs a paramedic!" she ordered. But Jinhyun cut her through.

"I'm fine," he insisted. "Help Jenna first."

"She's right," Sekjong said sharply. "You need medical attention."

He turned to Cherry. "You tok Ms. Wang," he said. "Please come."

He took Jinhyun's other arm and together, they half carried him towards an ambulance. Jenna was still unconscious and was being carried on a stretcher. The paramedics hoisted her up into an ambulance and drove away.

Meanwhile, more ambulances were lined up, treating the injured people. Jinhyun's fatigue caught up with him and his consciousness gave away. Sekjong and Cherry put him on a stretcher. A paramedic came over and began to give him CPR.

"His condition may be critical," the paramedic said. "He needs to be taken to the hospital!"

"I'll go with him!" Sekjong said at once.

"I'll go too," Cherry offered.

"But Ms. Wang, you need treatment too," Sekjong pointed out.

"I'm fine," she waved him off. "I'll get myself checked at the hospital. Let's escort him first!"

Without waiting for another word, she got into the ambulance behind the stretcher carrying Jinhyun. She must make sure this man lived. For her own sake.

But despite her desperation for her mission, a small part of her was praying for his recovery. Not for her own sake but for his.

….

"He'll be fine but he needs to stay here for a few days," the doctor stated. He had just checked up on Jinhyun.

"He inhaled too much of the toxic fumes," the doctor continued. "Moreover, the stress he had been taking over the past few months also weakened him. I detected slight fever as well. He must have been unwell since this morning."

Sekjong shook his head in disbelief. That boy! He thought hopelessly. He just had to put his work over his health.

"I'll take care of him," Sekjong said. Cherry was leaning against a wall, listening intently. Jinhyun was still out cold. They had just shifted him to the VIP ward and he was being monitored closely.

The doctor nodded and went off. Sekjong turned towards Cherry.

"Ms. Wang, how are you feeling now?" he asked, feeling concerned. "You were in there too. Are you hurt?"

"No," she replied. "The doctor said I'm fine. He just gave me some oxygen to breathe and a shot. That's all."

"You must be very tired," Sekjong noted. "You should head home and rest."

Cherry did not protest. Even though she wanted to stay back, she was sure that if they saw her turning into an old hag in the morning, there would be major ruckus. She will have to return the next day and check up on Jinhyun.

"Please let me know if I can assist you in any way," she offered.

"I will," Sekjong promised. Cherry bowed and walked away.

Once outside, she called Kahi.

"Investigate this fire," she said as soon as Kahi picked up the phone. "Send me all the details."

"Yes ma'am!" Kahi replied from the other end.

Cherry hung up the phone. For some reason, she had a strong inkling that this fire was not accidental.

It was intentional.

Was this an accident? Or did someone intentionally caused the fire? Will Cherry and Jimhgun find the culprit?
